Welllll, we had our wellness check scheduled for today and OF COURSE first thing this morning I went to wake up my kiddos for a treat and someone had diarrhea all in the pouch . I didn't know who at the time, but I was hoping the fecal float would show who's sick (if it was just one of them). The vet did the wellness check (very thorough and she was great with the gliders) and took fecal samples on both of them. Stoli (my sweet little boy ) is the sick one . They found protozoa in his stool and they think that's causing the diarrhea. They put him on Metronidazole for now and want me to come back for another float (if I feel this is necessary) once the medication is finished. Does this sound like the correct treatment for my lil guy? I want only the best for my lil ones and I want to double check that she has him on the right thing. Skyy checked out very healthy and Stoli did otherwise. They were good (no crabbing ) but Skyy was so scared she skunked. They're getting extra TLC tonight.

I just wanted everyone's opinion on this treatment. I'm familiar with the vet and have been referred to them by many people both on and off the board, but I just wanted to double check that everything went well. Thanks guys

Metronidozole/Flagyl is the correct med. However, from reading your post...only the one glider is being treated.

If both gliders reside together...all need to be treated due to cross contamination issues of being housed in the same cage together. The eggs are deposited in wet stool and thus everyone is at risk. The eggs may not appear in the others stool yet...due to life cycle of the bug. If not all treated...you may have another outbreak in a month or two.

Suggest asking for enough med to treat all three of the gliders. Best method is five days on the med and five days off. This is repeated for a total of three rounds. Method of this way of treatment is because it is most effective of getting rid of the parasite as it has seveal stages it changes into.

The cage needs a total strip done. Everything needs to be washed in Hot Soapy water with a bleach solution. Mix a gallon of hot water with a full cup of Bleach. Then risnse well. Cage, toys, water bottle, dishes, bedding....everything the glider has inside his cage needs to be disenfected.

Then several times a day...clean all areas that has runny stool on it with hot water with 10% Bleach added to the water. Then follow with a clean rinse. Wash all the food dishes the same way daily as well as the water bottle.

When handeling your gliders...be sure to wash your hands well with an antibacterial soap.

After treatment...follow up within a few days with another fecal float of all three of the gliders.

Infections of this sort...usually are from fruits and veggies that have become contaminated either though soil, water or other contaminated animals to people. So, wash your fruits and veggies well before you feed them to your gliders.

Thanks so much for your help! That's funny you said that about the fruits/veggies, as I just got some new veggies two days ago. I thought I washed them thoroughly (I'm an obsessive compulsive washer as it is), but I'll make sure to do a better job from now on. I feel so guilty . I'll stop by the vet tomorrow to get some more medicine for my other glider. I'll also completely strip the cage and continue to keep disinfected. Again, thanks for your help!

to prevent protazoa's keep the cage very clean give spring water and wash all fruits very well. always wash your hands before handling gliders. dr. dan johnson is the best vet hes in raleigh nc. he saved my glider a coupl yrs back. but the meds sound right to me. i would wash the cage with bleach after you get meds for the others.

I do keep the cage very clean. I always wash my hands. I do wash all of the fruits and veggies, and I use spring water as well. I guess I just didn't get the last batch of veggies as well as I should've . I live in Raleigh and I went to his practice today. Pricey, but good and I don't mind spending the extra penny to make sure they get amazing treatment.

I'm going to go ahead and disinfect the cage now and give her a dose of the medication. I'll get some more tomorrow and I'll disinfect everyday + spot clean.

I would dose all the gliders tonight and then get more meds tomorrow from the vet. This way...treatment has been started on all of them at the same time.

I did! My lil girl was much better about the medicine than my lil man. I've gotta call the vet first thing in the morning about getting more meds. Do you think they'll have a problem giving me meds for both of my gliders since they only wanted me to give them to one?

I'm really worried about him. He isn't eating his favorite food but he's picking through veggies. He won't get up and play and he seems very lethargic. He's already had one dose of the Flagyl and so has his sister. I went ahead and disinfected everything (including food bowls and water bottle) and put in clean pouches. I also threw out the veggies that I just bought and got some news one and scrubbed them. *sigh* I just hope he's okay

Do you think I should take him back to the vet in the morning? Is there anything else I can do but keep a close eye on him and take him to the vet ASAP?

If he seems worse, I'd take him back. Also, check for dehydration (tent the skin between his shoulders with your fingers-if it goes back down slowly or stays tented, he needs fluids). Pedialyte 50/50 with water is recommended, but if you don't have any, I'd offer him anything liquid he'll drink. If he's dehydrated and refusing to drink, you can put it down with the meds syringe if you have to. I know some antibiotics/meds can upset the tummy and they don't feel like eating. A night or two of extra yogurt drops, dried fruit, etc. if he'll eat them won't hurt, either. I peel ALL of my glider's fruit, since you can never wash off everything. The only skin they get is grapes, which they normally leave behind, anyway. But as to the vet, better safe than sorry.

Oh, and as long as they're on the meds-feed them yogurt (nothing with artificial sweetener, though)-it will help to restore the natural balance in the intestines/tummy. When mine are on meds, I put it in their dish at night, and also offer as a licky treat often.
