I rarely ever post here, I have never had a problem with the behaviour of a glider to this point before, but my newest glider is a pitbull biter, This fella is vicious! Mars and Venus were used in the filming of the documentary I was involved with last week, and when they wrapped, they gave them to me. They had them for a few months so I know he is just stressed from being moved but what a bugger he is. Mars freaks out if anyone goes near his cage. Feeding time is nerve wrecking. His cage is 6 ft tall, but even if I open the door slightly, he flys out of the pouch in a flash to attack.
Tonight he got me . He was on me in a second and bite me over and over while holding on for dear life at the same time. I peeled him off with my spare hand, only for him to grab ahold of that one and continue his attack. I have never been tore up by a glider like this, lol. It didnt hurt terribly, but he really ripped up my hands. I literally had to fling him off to get him to release! Theres no way Im getting in a tent with this one, hahaha!

Couldn't keep from laughing about not wanting to get into a tent with him.

This male is having territorial issues. New enviroment will certainly play a number on him. My suggestion is to have him neutered ASAP as his issues will not go away overnight with multi gliders. I have one who is five years old and it has only been in this past year that he has finally settled down. However, in his place...I now have Seth who was my bra baby.

Seth is two years oop. and his issue started when he was about five months oop. Only time he is not on the defensive side is when he is totally removed from his cage and not in the glider room. I also cannot have any odors of other gliders on me. And when he and his mate Peanut have babies oop.....both of them would rather eat me than spit me out. Getting the babies from them to handle on a daily basis is a real bummer.

So...unless you can learn how to handle his aggressiveness...then it would be best to just neuter him. Once altered he will become more docile with time.

That sounds like a good option, having him fixed. He is really out for blood, i have never had a pitbull biter. I have a few adults who will bite me the odd time I reach in their cage, but not a big deal. Mars dug in and would not let go for anything. I had his whole body in my hand pulling, and still he held on with just his teeth! My little bloodsucker, how trick or treatish!

Judie hit the nail on the head, so to speak. I have a male that absolutely cannot smell another male glider or just goes nuts. He got me once like you are describing, and he is a very bonded glider. If I even walk into his room after being with my other pair (another room), he will get attitude and not accept a treat through the bars of the cage. I don't think I would go into the tent either .

I have a glider like this. He isnt aggressive unless you try to take him out of his cage or try to hold him. He is definately a nipper and will try to take a bite out of me if even I get too close, but he doesnt lunge or anything. The other day I had to clip his nails and it was a real experience. After getting bit quite a few times, I finally got the job done, but it was a real task. I guess not all glider can be good can they?

Rocco is a biter like that, but he only got that way when Naoshimu was pregnant. He got really protective, & would fly out of the nest box if I reached in the cage. For a while I couldn't even pet him. Now he'll let me pet him from time to time, & I can hold him if he's in the pouch; He's an AWESOME dad, & very loving with Naoshi & the twins, but no lovey-dovey for me!

Gimli was out for blood when we brought him home. He'd been abused, so we didn't really blame him. I put my hands in the cage the first couple of months with my hands INSIDE the sleeves of my sweat jacket (he didn't seem interested in attacking that way)-so he could get used to me moving around in his territory, learn I wasn't going to hurt him, and less stress on us both. Well, one night after I had gone to bed I hear this earsplitting yell from my husband and a bunch of crashing. Apparently he had put his hands in the cage for some reason, and Gim had lunged out of his pouch and attached himself to the back of my husband's hand, and he could not get him off. The more he tried, the harder Gim clamped down. He started screaming for me when he tried running cold water over him briefly to get him to let go. There was blood everywhere (my husband's). I came flying out, told him 'don't shake him', scooped a dishtowel around him and he came loose. Gently put him back in cage dishtowel and all while my husband leaned against the wall with tears running down his face and bleeding. That was the last time Gim EVER tried to bite like that, and within a month after, never again. He came out of the towel with this look on his face like he'd fully expected to be launched across the room, but wasn't. He was 2+ when we got him, and now just loves people. It took a lot of time and effort, but he did settle down. He was neutered later, about 3 months after this incident, but the battle was over before then. Neutering does help, though.

I have two gliders that show aggression. One was my hand fed rejected joey, Gabriel. Now Gabriel is just very sensitive, I can't have another glider smell on me or he gets highly upset, and he can't see me take care of any other gliders or he gets upset. So now he and his mate are seperated from the other gliders and I handle them first evey day. Its really helped. He is always happy to come to me and is still my bra baby. But if I am not careful, ouch. He digs in his nails to hold on and will bite and bite and I have a hard time prying his mouth open to remove him.
Roo, was a rescue who came from a lady who bought him at our local flea market, he allways had issues and she was never able to bond with him. He is what I call a neurotic glider, and his behavior is more intense and severe than most other gliders that we get in. I have only seen a few gliders with these severe behavior problems. He is making slow progress, but I won't get into a tent with him either! We do a playtime in the bathroom and I am always watching him carefully. He is terrible cage protective and pouch protective, but once I get him in the bathroom he is much better. I continue to reward good behavior and distract bad behavior with him and it seems to be working. He doesn't bite as severe as Gabriel will, but will bite and run. Hopefully Roo will improve and someday truts humans. Right now, I am the only one who can handle him at all, mostly cause I am so stubborn and won't give up on him.
Good luck with you guy and keep us updated on your progress.

Mars & Venus have not been around the other gliders, still quarentined, but Im sure he can smell them. Yeah his bite was vicious. I have been bitten a hundred times by my other gliders, just nips and all, but this was unreal! I was at my Dr.s yesterday for my flue shot and he took a look at the wounds, said I may have nerve damage! There are about a dozen puncture wounds all in one area, between my thumb and forefinger. Looks like he turned my hand to pulp, lol. Mars and Venus do have 1 ip right now, so I understand why he is on guard in a new place. I have to see if he settles in or needs the snip!

*terrified* Omg... I only have one glider right now and he is my precious little baby. I mean, if I don't put him in my bra every morning, he pokes his head out about 10 am to say "what in the heck are you doing without ME?" Now I'm getting him a female in Feb. and I am so freaked that he'll turn on me like that! I'll be so heartbroken if he does. Hope your hand feels better soon. *hugs*

Oh no, dont be frightened, lol. I have some 30 adult gliders and have kept gliders for over 3 years and this is the first time I have had one do this or act this way. Some gliders will nip now and then, but it isnt often that they all out attack like Mars did. Don't let it put you off.

Karen, when Misu "saw black" the time he bit me, I lost all feeling in the tip of my finger due to nerve damage. Took about 6mos. for feeling to come back. It's almost as if they bite, then hold on and go deeper, then go deeper kinda thing. Ouch. I hope you can figure out what triggered him, good luck.

[:"magenta"]taylynn, if you are getting your girl from a reputable breeder, this type of behavior is not likely to happen. usually gliders who act like this have problems with trusting humans, like jen's gimli. they have been abused or mistreated, and think all people are bad.

have ya thought of a name for that girl yet? [/]
