There are 2. They are displaying different worrying symptoms. I know what to do. Bring them to the vet. The problem is there is a blizzard right now and I probably won't be able to go to the vet until Monday.

One is just constipated (yes, I know it could be caused by something else). But she is licking the area more now, and I'm worried she might SM.

The other is a bit lethargic. And he is displaying similar, though not as severe signs as his brother.

His brother died about 2 months ago... and so we're overly cautious. But, I fear something may really be wrong.

Did you get any advice last night in the shoot box? Why do you think one is constipated? Just by the licking? If you can not get to a vet, and that is what is needed. Clean your cage and place white papertowels on the bottom. That way you will see what type of bowel movements they are having when they are out. I would also offer lots of fluid, and not just in a water bottle, I find that my gliders will sleep through the day if left alone. But, if I carry them in a pouch, wake them, and offer water/glideraide/juice whatever, from a spoon, the will drink.
If your glider is constipated like you think, fluids are needed. If one is lethargic, fluids can not hurt. YOu can not get too much fluid in them.

I haven't had much experience with glider illnessess, thankfully, so this is all the information I can give. Sorry and I hope you are able to get to the vet soon and they start feeling better.

BTW, what did the last glider die of? This may be a clue as to what is wrong with these two.

She has been constipated for a few days. We've seen that her poop is a bit dry. And she hisses a bit when pooping. She still eats and drinks tons though.

I have been giving the lethargic one fluids. I'm just really upset because of how fast his brother passed away and the terrible weather.

We had what seems like a rather complete necropsy done on the one that died. It seems it was an unrelated (physical injury) problem. I'll try to find the link to the other thread.

I've been told that keeping sliced grapes (so they don't have to work too hard) in their pouch during the day is an easy way to get fluids into them too since grapes are very hydrating.

Fortunately the weather cleared up a bit, and we decided to try and go to the vet this afternoon after all.

We finally got Macy (the constipated one) to take some mineral oil before the trip by putting a few drops on an apple piece. Her poop at the vet looked much better, though she was still having a little trouble going. I think she should be fine with some minor care. The vet said she seemed fine as well.

The vet also examined Franklin, and we decided to have some blood tests done. Unfortunately the vet was unsuccessful in her attemtps to draw blood from his thigh and tail. She did clip his nail short and get a few drops from there. She will be able to do a few tests with that blood on Tuesday.

With Franklin, the vet said she believed his not eating and lack of energy may be caused by stress from Macy? They were introduced about 2 weeks ago, and crabbed at each other the first night (no fighting), but by the second night they were kissing and sleeping together.

Franklin will still eat when fed by hand, and so after an exam in which most things seemed OK (was alert, pooped, crabbed, etc.) she presented the stress theory. Franklin did seem slightly more pale than normal. But, he has never been a bright pink anyway, so it's hard to tell. His ears were a little dry, but they have kind of always been like that and the vet suggested it was possibly just environmental.

I may have left a few things out as I haven't slept in quite awhile. But, hopefully things look better than they did this morning. We were also able to pick up a few supplies we needed.

edit : Here's the thread about what happened to Noah. Btw, I was eventually able to complete the survey on the death database, it (or my computer) must've just been having problems when I first tried.

We are thinking about it. We did research different diets before we chose the one we are using though. And, I don't think any of these problems have been caused by diet. I'm also a little hesitant to switch diets until I know they are feeling 100%.

I hope Franklin doesn't get it in his little head to be sick more often. He's getting hand fed and hydrated and got to sleep on the heated lazy boy (one of his fav places) last night. It's funny when he actually sits up in it. I guess he deserves it after getting poked so many times trying to get blood, and then having his nail cut off.

Oh, and slightly off topic, I just remembered the vet was insisting we have a UV/heat lamp for the sg's cage. The other vet at the same clinic had made this suggestion last time we were there as well. We told them the temperature in the cage is known/controlled because our thermostat is right next to the cage. The temperature in our apt. is set for the gliders, and not us, as well. The vet still insists they need a UV light source. We have since talked (and read) to a few ppl who said the opposite, that a UV light source shouldn't be used. I was wondering if anyone had any comments on this subject because the new vet seemed open to any information we could provide her. I will continue to do more research as well.

the uv light source is to help them metabolize the calcium, but if you are feeding calcium supplements with vitamin D3 then, you don't need the uv light. The only way the uv light can work is if they are under it directly, since they spend most of their time in the pouches, they don't get any benefit from the uv light. As for the constipation, something to keep in mind is you can feed them citrus, in small amounts to help loosen the stool. Good luck, I would suggest you do the diet change asap, as you might find that their health improves with the change to bml.
Good luck!

I do go back and read your previous post on the other little glider who died. However, outside of saying he died from Liver Failure and some other illness is not telling us much.

The liver acts like a sponge. A bacterial or viral illness will give off toxins and the liver then asorbs them. Thus over a period of time...the liver is damaged and unable to function properly...thus Liver Failure. Other organs are often damaged as well due to secondary problems.

Lengthy bacterial/viral illnesses often cause another secondary problem...one of which is the loss of calcium. However, I did not see it mentioned as to any symptoms so this may not have been a problem.

Since you mentioned UV light...often this is suggested by some vets for juandice and if this were the case...your glider would have yellow feet and nose.

A sick glider often needs to have added warmth especially if dehydrated. Perhaps this is why the vet suggested a UV lamp for extra heat?

Can you give more information on the necropsy by chance of the other glider?

She was suggesting it because they suggest it for ALL gliders regardless of condition or diet. Anyone have comments on this practice?

Yes, the added warmth because he was possibly dehydrated/sick was suggested. We have provided additional warmth by other means since returning home.

No, sorry. But, we are confident it was unrelated. It doesn't need to be discussed further. PM'ed you.

edit: Once again, we are following an existing diet. I don't believe any of these health problems are diet related. In terms of the constipation, I've heard just as many problems with that on BML as any other diet. But, we will consider switching once we are sure the sg's have recovered from their existing ailments.

edit2 : I forgot to mention we went out looking for the BML supplies. We were able to find everything (even the Rep-Cal stuff) except the "PREMIXED Gerber juice with yogurt (Mixed Fruit or Banana)". We looked at both Safeway and Walmart. Does anyone living in Alberta (or Canada) know where to find it? Or are there substitutes that can be used?

Also, still looking for information on the ALL gliders ALWAYS need a UV light thing.

Sih, I am so glad you were able to get to the vet and they are on their way to recovery.
I too use BML most of the time, but won't lie and say it is an absolute, there are days when I vary. Please do not feel pressured to use any one diet. You need to study all the diets and pick the one that you feel is best for your glider family and your needs. There are just so many of us that have found BML meets all the needs, people get passionate about it. LOL.
Now, for the juice. I went to the BML page HERE , and if you read under the juice section you will find this
Quote:

For those that can not find this, you may substitute 2 oz of plain yogurt and 2 oz of mixed fruit juice

I know there have been many times when I could not find the right yogurt juice myself and I live in the USA.
Have to say, love that picture of your glider in the reclinger sitting up. So cute. I can tell he is well loved.

The vet called with the blood test results today. They didn't have much blood to work with, but she said there were a few results. I don't have it in writing yet, and it's technical of course, so I may leave stuff out or make mistakes.

The jist of it was he had high levels of new red blood cells. She said this could be for several reasons, though she ruled out bacterial and viral infections for now. I think the main things she was pointing to were toxicity or some kind of internal bleeding (ulcer). He hasn't ever bled externally that we know of.

Our guess for now is the toxic thing. Because he likes to lick metal, maybe he is being poisoned from something?

We have known about this threat, and so have tried to be cautious in what was in the cage. As of now he has 2 wheels, 1 chain hanging a toy, the water bottle, hardware on manzita branches, and door latches. When I play with him out of the cage, he often licks my watch too.

I am pretty sure the chain is stainless, as are the door latches. The water bottle should be fine, as is my watch. That leaves the manzita hardware, which I don't think I've ever seen him lick, and the wheels.

The wheels in the cage are Wodent wheels. I'm guessing parts of the hardware for that are not stainless steel? He licks it all; washers, stand, clip.

The vet wants to give him a liquid iron supplement, and we'll remove all metal, though I'd like to put the wheels back in either confirmed all stainless, or new ones (or new hardware). After 2-3 weeks, she'll do more blood work. She said if metal toxicity was the problem, it should hopefully clear up by removing the source. If not, she had a few other tests she wants to run (more blood work, X-rays, etc.).

As a side note, Macy (the constipated one), seems to be doing better as well. She's had a few different laxatives and though isn't completely comfortable doing #2 yet, seems better.

I have a glider that is sick now, and saw the vet today. he ddint understand why MoJo would lick metal. MojO is compulsive when it comes to licking metal. My vet says he has an upper respitory infection working its way down. We got anti biotics. I am interested in this whole metal thiing. PLease let me know all the information you have about it. I am extremelly worried and dont know what to do about the metal. Its on their pouches(clips), practically everything we hang in their cage has these clips and bells and he licks licks licks. What can we do....
