Hello, I was in search of what I do not know, when I happened on to you folks,I wish I would have done so in happier times, but if shareing my story helps ease this ache, and if it makes all alittle more carefull, then,my "Sugar"did not die in vane.My little boy was abit over two years old, I had built is home, out of a big screen tv cabinet, which I had gutted out, the front was total chicken wire, inside he had apple branchs, ropes, pouch, and a swinging log, which he loved,I had knocked out the knots in the chunk of log, allowing him peek a boo spots, the back I had put button slips for ease in cleaning and feeding. he was also allowed free roam of the first story of our house, when safty measures were made, the neat part of his house, was it was on rollers,so on Christmas eve, I rolled him with the help of my daughter into my bedroom, to insure that on Christmas the guests would not disturb him or vice versa, somehow the bottom corner slip button, slipped open allowing enough room for "Sugar" to get out while I slept. One of the safty measures was not in place,"Sadie" one of the two dogs I have, was sleeping on my bed.She was always to intrested in him, so had to be outside when he was out.On Christmas Morning I found my beloved "Sugar" dead in the kitchen."sadie"must have hit him on his back, with her paw, as I slept. No I will never get another Glider, knowing I cannot give it 100% safty. The guilt I have is over whelming, and the tears I am crying will never bring him back. Godbless you all for haveing this board and allowing me the chance to share my grief. Diana

I am so sorry for your loss. You sound like you were a great glider parent. None of us can ensure 100% safety. We can do the best we can. I hope that, once your grief has lessened, you might reconsider. Your grief alone tells me how much you loved your glider. I am sure that your glider sensed that. I hope you can take comfort that you gave Sugar the best life possible.

Diana--I am sorry that you lost Sugar. I am even more saddened by your sense of loss. I feel for you and the pain you are still experiencing. Sometimes deep wounds take longer to heal. I have a sense that you have been severely impacted by the loss of Sugar. I am glad that this forum has been a way for you to close the wounds that are so apparently open by Sugar's departure. This was in no way your fault and you are not directly or indirectly responsible for Suagar's passing. This was truly an unfortunate accident. These things happen from time to time, no matter what precautions are taken. We will all mourn the loss of Sugar. Even more, we will mourn the loss of another caring sugar glider owner.
Oh, I do not mind careless or insensitive glider owners leaving the ranks--but I do mind a person of your integrity leaving. You are a loving, nurturing, and safety minded owner. Your presence is surely missed by us. I for one, will personally miss your presence. I will pray for your glider and for you. If I could only have one wish for Christmas, it would be that you rejoin our ranks. The ranks of caring and compassionate glider owners. You may not need another glider, but rest assured, another glider is in need of you! God must have needed another "good" glider angel for glider heaven. But the gliders here on earth need a "gaurdian angel glider owner". I think that is you. No, let me speak frankly, "I know that person is you". Please make a Christmas wish come true for me and rejoin the ranks by getting another glider.
You have helped many people by just posting here today. You can help many others by sharing your experiences with a new glider. You can even adopt a rescue glider! What a tribute and memorial that would be to Sugar. I beg of you to consider granting my Christmas wish. It is difficult typing from the begging position and my knees are beginning to hurt. Please think about this. Weigh the sorrow you feel in your heart against the happines you would feel by caring for another glider and by helping others. My deepest sympathies for past events and my congratulations on your new beginning.
John (Rocky & Adrienne)

Sorry to hear of your loss and I hope in time you will change your mind about owning another glider, you sound like you loved yours very deeply and would provide another glider with a loving home.

I'd like to say that this is a serious thing, for a caring owner to lose a loved one. You blame yourself because you do care. It wasn't your fault. Don't keep the guilt inside you, Sugar's death was not in vain, you will find another baby that will bring you sunshine again. We are hear to preserve the gliders, the one's that do die are for the one's that are alive and waiting for a person like you. Don't let this stop you from being another glider's mom. If the world stopped because of mishapes the world wouldn't be. In the bible it says in ecclesiastes 9:11 that unforeseen occurrences befall us all. So what I'm trying to say is don't let this stop you. Like they said we are not 100% owners when it comes to safety. Mamas lose their baby's more then you know, human that is. That mother doesn't stop having baby's, I'm no counceler, but I am a good friend along with all of glider central members. I hope I wasn't out of line in any way, and I feel bad for your lose.
------------------
David, Dody, and gliders

I'm sorry about your loss, but everyon is right, you're not to blame. While i have never lost a glider, i have come close and i understand the grief you must be feeling. If you want to, you can just stick around on the board, even if u don't feel ready for another glider. We would all love to hear of your glider stories, and learn from your experience. And as you pointed it out, it may help your grief.

All I can say is don't give up. As I have learned with dogs, they cannot always be trained the way you want. The best thing that I have gone though is not introducing the dog to the glider in the first place and keeping the dog in another room. That way you can prevent the unpreventable from happening. This is no way your fault. It just happened. []images/icons/frown.gif" border="0[/] You show a good personality to own a glider because of your love and cariness. Just think of what homes are needed for those abused gliders in need of love and attention. Most of mine were rescue gliders. And it took some work but they all have turned out sweet! So, look up and give someone a good home!!!!!!!! []images/icons/smile.gif" border="0[/]
Tessa~~~~~~~~~~~~

I, too, have lost a glider. After a month of crying all the time, I fell in love with another little one. Not that I needed another glider, I had three. But I took Abby home with me and she has become my AE glider. She goes to work with me every day. And just this week, I brought home a little buddy for her. I only intended to have a pair of gliders when I first found about them. But they just kind of keep falling into my lap and heart and now I have 5 of the furries. You might find out this happens to you, too.

Thats really sad,so sorry to hear that, and I can totally relate. Mine was only a hamster, and when I look back I realized my mistake and how my greyhound got a hold of it and killed it. But don't give up on having another pet glider, because of my accident, I am more careful making sure the door on my cage is locked, and I put a different kind of mechanism on the door, so if one gets out its my fault. We all make mistakes, and you can safety everything as much as u can, but you just never know what can happen. Give yourself some time, don't give up on having another glider,!!!

Diana-Nobody can tell for sure how they will react to the loss of a glider. I often wonder what I would do if one of my glider guys met with ill fortune. I know it would be devastating to say the least, but I would like to think I would let my love of gliders override the sense of loss and get another one. I agree with everyone here, that you sound like a great glider "parent" and should not blame yourself for what happened. Maybe another glider at some point in time will find it's way into your life. Goodness knows there are a lot of gliders out there that could use a person like you.

I will never forget the pain I felt when I lost one of my favorite gliders..Gremlin. Up till then I had multi gliders and had taken great pleasure that for three years all was well with them. I knew in my heart that the odds were high that eventually the law of average would catch up with me. And it did one cold October day.
The pain was overwhelming. Even though I had sought good vet care I could not change how the outcome ended. I cried for months and sometimes even now I still feel the saddness of his loss. But, on the other hand I feel I am a good glider mom and I know he would want me to carry out my affair with my other gliders. You see, I am a breeder but what I do is educate people on the care and health of the glider to someone much like yourself who wishes to be a good glider owner. So, in my own way...I help those in the glider community with my knowledge as I have always given it freely. So, Gemlin lives on....and your Sugar will too.
He would want you to be happy as he is still with you....and as stated there are many gliders out there who are in need of great owners as yourself.
I wish you much success with your next Sugar Glider when your tears are dry.
<<<Glider Hugs>>>, Judie Hausmann
