This morning I went downstairs to take a shower and my female breeder, SweetPea was out eating. It was unusual so I went to her cage and started talking to her and I noticed her jaw. It was swollen all the way up to her eye. I think it looks terrible. I am wondering what could be wrong. My b/f is going to see if it gets any better in the next day or so if not we are going to have to take her to the vet. Has anyone else experienced this before? Ellen

[:"blue"]What diet are you feeding? That might give us a clue HOWEVER she definitely needs to see a vet as soon as possible. More than likely she is in pain, and it might be something that the vet could fix relatively easily if caught in time. [/]

I;ve never experienced something like that before, but I don't think it is wise to wait until tomorrow. If anything, call the vet and describe the symptoms to him/her. They'll be able to tell you if you need to bring her in immediately. Which in my opinion, it sounds like you do. Maybe it's a small infection or something... but yeah. At least contact the vet now. Let us know! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have never experienced this myself, but it sounds like it could be Lumpy Jaw, do a serch and you will find several posts on it. I did one and found this one Post on Lumpy Jaw it gives a good description. I do think a vet trip is in order. Keep us updated.

The glider has an abcess and needs medical care ASAP. The swelling will cause extreme pain and discomfort. Without medical attention if Lumpy Jaw...the infection will go systemic and you will loose the glider. If Lumpy Jaw the abcess needs to be cultered and possibly drained, and usually an antibiotic perscribed for 30 days. If treatment is not given long enough...the infection will seem to clear up....only to return. If only an infection due to being scratched from a swipe from her mate...the tissue will swell on that side of the face. Within a few days the hair will usually fall out. With simple antibiotic med....the infection will clear up in a few days and hair will regrow within a month. Please seek vet care ASAP. If you need help locating a vet...post to the board and someone will try to help you locate one.

UPDATE........ We talked to a vet shortly after I posted. There was'nt an exotic vet nearby that is open on weekends or 24 hours. The only vet that takes suggies didn't open back up until Monday (today), but she told me in the mean time not to give her the happy glider. She told me to give her fruits and easy to eat veggies. She goes to the vet today at 5:00 pm. I'm sorry I didn't update sooner, but I kept a close eye on her the rest of the weekend and babied her! She will be ok. I'll update after the vet. Thanks for the info and concern.

Ok... here is the update on Sweet Pea. She had an infection either from being bit or scratched or even her cage or food. She is on antibiotics and secluded for a week. They wanted to do x-rays and do some kind of tooth culture, but the vet thought that drawing out the infection and the puss with a needle then treating with antibiotics would work just fine. So we will watch her for a week and if no better then they are going to do the $250.00 worth of x-rays and cultures. Thanks everyone
