I got Zoe's necropsy results yesterday. Poor little girl had three strikes against her. The necropsy showed her heart to be very enlarged and her lungs to be fliud-filled. Thus congestive heart failure has been given as the primary cause of death. Also noted was a tumor on the liver. However, the liver was not enlarged nor were any nodules and/or fibrotic areas noted. Finally, Zoe did have an enlarged right kidney with degenerative changes noted. Although the right kidney problem would not have been too much of an issue as long as Zoe's left kidney continued functionally properply, the tumor apparently was cancerous and eventually would have led to Zoe's death. The vet feels that the congestive heart failure was a longstanding problem (either congenital in nature or due to viral/bacterial infection of the heart in the past. Given the filthy cage conditions I found Zoe in when I rescued her, it would not surprise me if a bacteria buildup in the cage was the cause of a heart infection which led to the congestive heart failure scenario. Even if diagnosed with the congestive heart failure & given lasix daily the rest of her life, eventually, the congestive heart failure would have taken Zoe. The dental abscessing/infection apparently was the final straw as it had become systemic according to the vet. Zoe's body just couldn't handle anymore & the congestive heart failure went into overdrive killing her. The sad part is that Zoe never exhibited signs/symptoms of congestive heart failure until this last bout of dental abscessing/infection. She'd had a Wellness check just 2 months ago and her heart/lungs sounded fine per the other vet. Anyway, Just wanted to advise on the necropsy results and to encourage members to do a few things to minimize the risk of bacterial infection: 1) please clean your glider's cage regularly. 2) never leave their food out for more than 6-8 hours as bacteria can start building up in it. 3) if any facial swelling or dental problems are noted, get your glider to the vet for treatment ASAP to reduce the risk of systemic infection occurring. 4) have regular fecals/gram stains (bacterial testing) done to to rule out parasitic and/or bacterial conditions.

Thank you for sharing the results of Zoe's necropsy with us, I know I have learned several new things just reading this post. I am so sorry you had to lose a glider, perhaps there is solace in knowing that sharing her info will most likely save more than one life. Thank you again...

Thank you so much for sharing. I hope you find some comfort in knowing that this information will help save many other gliders. Just the other day, I was asking how long was ok to let the food set in the cage, as my Monster likes to doddle. I'm so sorry about Zoe, but you obviously rescued her from a horrible situation and made her last days joyful!

Thank you Roo, for sharing with us. I'm so thankful the vet was able to tell you what was going on. Thanks also for the glider care reminders -- we all need a reminder sometimes!! ~Lynn

I know it's painful to read the necropsy and realize multiple organs were involved and had been for some time, Lois -- Gladys' was similar. But I'm convinced that if they really felt bad, they would have showed it earlier, so I think you can take comfort in a) the fact that you really couldn't have done more, and b) that she really WAS okay up to the end, and enjoyed a happy, wonderful life with you. I hope you have that comfort -- I believe it to be true.

its too sad there are people out there that would buy an animal and treat it like that in dirty conditions. I agree everyone needs to clean everything every other day with soap water and vinegar. i do it all the time also new pouches every other day. and i dont leave bml in cage more than 5 hrs. i make them eat it off my washed hands before i go to bed at night. so it dont stay in their cage.

Thanks to everyone for their support with respect to Zoe's death and Lucy I want you to know I've completed info. on Tyler, Tia and BooBear for the Death Data Base. Took way more than 15 minutes to do each. Will complete the info. on Zoe either later today or tomorrow. Sorry I was remiss in not filling out the forms on Tyler, Tia and BooBear prior to this. Just lazy I guess but I know how important the data is. I strongly recommend that anyone whose glider dies talk to the vet to see if they'll do at least a gross necropsy free of charge. They normally are willing to do so if you only ask. By asking your vet to do a gross necropsy, you will have some idea of what the primary cause of death was. Then you can fill out the Death Data Base form for Lucy to help compile statistics on glider death causes. It may prove very useful for future glider generations.
