Hello everyone...I have a story to share. I'm new to the site and thought I'd share my story so no one else will lose a glider like I did.

Let's start out with my first glider, Badger. He was so little when I got him and we bonded right away. Then along came "Jake" whose human mom didn't know what to do with him since he was taken from his mom too soon. So we thought that we should put Jake in with Badger and maybe they could help each other out. Well fast forward to when Jakes human mom finally takes him back home....only to find out that Jake isn't really a Jake.......it's a girl! So I get "Brownie" back and her and Badger are so happy to be together again!

Brownie was a small glider who loved to lick my ears, lick on any straw I had and loved to give kisses. Her and Brownie were raised together so it was devastating when I went to check on them the morning of Feb. 18th, 2007. I found Brownie in the bottom of her cage, shaking and looking like she was having seizures! To my dismay the water bottle had malfunctioned sometime in the previous 9-10 hours and she had gotten dehydrated! I immediately called my neighbor and she came over and we pushed fluids and kept her body temperature up. We thought she was perking up a bit, but after all the life saving efforts we tried, she passed away in my hand. Well at this time, Brownie had a joey in the pouch. We just assumed that this joey was dead too, but when we checked.....it was still alive! We couldn't believe that this baby had survived all of that. So we came up with this idea that maybe we could transplant him into my other glider mom's pouch (who had a baby in pouch at time) and she could feed this little joey as her own. After much struggling, we were able to get the joey in the surrogate mom's pouch. And we waited....and waited.....and waited.....until finally last month, we FINALLY saw 2, yes 2 joeys hanging out of mom's pouch! The baby had survived! We were so happy that the baby made it!

Well the final chapter of the story.......I went in to check on mom and babies one morning because the previous day, one of the babies had fallen off.....Brownies baby. And when I went into the room, glider mom had pushed her baby off into the corner and was proceeding to kill and eat baby MJ. frown So we lost the baby after all that....and 2 months to the day that her mommy died. frown

So I have since taken the other baby and have started hand raising her. She is getting big, eating good and starting to become a very cute glider!

I have learned to make sure all the water bottles are functioning at all times so I don't experience this again!

BluGirl-
Just this morning, I had a water bottle experience. My conure's water bottle had malfunctioned at some point during the night. Fortunately, he was able to scream at me enough to get me to check his cage again after I fed him. I didn't even notice while I was feeding him. He drank and drank and drank - and he's fine now.

I'm going right now to check my sugar monkeys' water bottles!

Oh - and I also have 2 water bottles in each cage. They are different types - so if something breaks on one, it is not as likely to break on the other.

Thank you so much for sharing your sad story! It helps as all to be more aware.

I am so very sorry for you loss. Just yesterday, for some reason, Piper and Pru's bottle leaked out. I happen to go in to check on them (I check on all my gliders throughout the day) and their bottle was dry. It was full in the morning. The bottom of their cage was soaking wet! I cleaned their cage, and ran down to pet store down the street from me and got them a new bottle. But I shudder to think if I somehow had not noticed it! Thank you for reminding us all to check their water regularly.

And again, I am sorry for your losses.

Thank you everyone for all of your kind thoughts. One thing I have learned through having gliders is that you have to go some sad stuff to learn. This was a HUGE learning experience for me.

I do now keep a back up bottle on the opposite side of the cage just in case something were to ever happen like that again. They love being able to drink from both sides of the cage.

Sorry to hear of your lost frown That must have been so hard for you. Might I suggest what I use for water? It's a water container (I think it's used mostly for birds) and it's covered (like a tiny house) and it screws on to the side of the cage and has a perch that the glider could sit on. I found it at Petsmart, in the small animals/birds section. It's plastic but it seems very safe and my little guy loves drinking out of it for some reason. smile
