I had a really bad flea problem this summer and have no cat or dog in the house. I was trying to catch the fleas as they would jump on me and throw them in soapy water to kill them, but, my gliders have managed to get them anyways. How do I go about getting rid of them safely and treating them ...... I have 4 females that have joeys ready to come out of pouch any day now and dont want to hurt them either. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />
I did manage to get rid of the fleas from my carpet, just not the gliders and need help with that.

Wow, that's a toughie! Can't help you there, hopefully someone will be along shortly. I'd like to hear the answer to this one (even though there are no fleas in Utah).

My husband, Oldcolt58 says,
"Remove and wash all toys and decorations. Don't put them back in. Wash bottom of cage and pouches DAILY. Supposedly fleas don't lay eggs on the host. Wash tent and anything gliders are on. You would have to remove gliders from anyplace they crawl on that might have the fleas."

I hope this helps.

I hope it will, I am changing the papers in the bottom of the cage every other day to help. I dont have very much in their cages but I will take what is there out to clean. I wont let them out to run except on me, they dont even get past my butt. I am just really paranoid about them hitting the floor and the fleas getting back on the floor and have to start this whole thing all over again. I need to get a few more pouches made before I could wash what they are using though.

It must be nice not to have to worry about fleas, they are a real pain in the behind...... as well as really itching in the feet. I looked terrible and dont want the gliders getting bad from them as well.

My suggestion is to take the gliders into the vet. Fleas carry desease...for one many parasites.

I would think a topical med or organic flea shampoo that is used for cats.....in a proper dose would work. But you need to discuss this with your vet first.

Fleas do lay eggs on the host as well as inside their bedding of the animal. Cycle must be broken in order to get rid of them.

Put the gliders inside a critter carrier with shreaded up paper towels....then wash their pouch in hot soapy water and then dry inside a dryer. You will have to do this everyday till the fleas are gone. Cleaning everything else and not the bedding will not eleminate the problem. Fleas will hop off the gliders and lay eggs in the surrounding carpet as well. May want to consider removing the gliders along with their cage....from the house or apt for several hours and using bombs to kill the fleas in the carpet. If the newspaper is old...suggest not using it as fleas may have laid eggs in it as well. Cover the bottom of the cage with white paper towels and "remove daily" as well as washing the tray down really well when changing out the old paper.

You also need help from a vet to eleminate the fleas on the gliders so schedule a vet appointment.

I dont have any carpet in the room where I have them. So, if I use bombs, do I leave their cages where they are and let them get bombed too or take them outside or what?

Remove the cage and the gliders for several hours from the house. Then open the windows when you return to air it out.

Bombs leave a residue so you will need to wipe things (all surfaces and floor) down well in the room if the gliders are allowed to run in it.

However, I would schedule a vet check and discuss the possibility of another alternative if possible before resulting with the use of the bombs. The vet may be able to perscribe something that is much safer to use. Be worth a phone call to ask.

I did put in a phone call to my vet..... it took her a couple of days to research it and figure out the safest way to deal with the fleas. She found out there is a powder or dust that can be used on gliders that is safe for them. She was going to check up on it and see about finding a brand name for me. I did some checking on it too and the local pet store can get me the dust . Its made by Adams. I wont have all the information about it till they get it in next thursday tho. In the meantime, I am having her shck out if garlic is ok in small doses. Someone told me that brewers yeast with garlic would help keep the fleas off and she is going to check on that as well. I gave her the site for here and told her to check with the vets that are on hand for other vets willing to learn and she is learning quite a bit with having to deal with mine. Plus she belongs to another group that has vets helping vets.

the powder is probably ok if u use it under the bedding or newspaper in the cages, this is not 100% effective tho.
Ask your vet about revolution or advantage for kittens.
If you suck the liquid out with a syringe so u are just putting one drop on each glider it is pretty safe. Advantage is effective on fleas only. Revolution will also protect against a cpl types of internal parasites and 95% against tics aswell. Fleas will not be able to reproduce or surive on them atall or in their enviroment. These products are amazing when used properly with long term effectivenes, applied only once a month and u donnot treat the house or even the immediate enviroment atall.
The use of these products in small animals is very new and still expremental so using the minimal does is very important.
Also thot i would mention while rarely and only in certain parts of the world it might be possible for fleas to have transmisable desease they donnot carry other parasites.
Tney can however cause itchy dermitis which can lead to skin infection, human or animals who react to fleas with bumps and itching are actually having allergic reactions.
In severe cases only it can even cause anemia.
