Clavamox is a great drug, too. It is good at mouth and sinus infections. In fact, when kids get bitten by a cat or dog, we put the kids on it to protect against germs from the pet's mouth. The major bummer about Clavamox is the gut upset. Some just don't tolerate it well. It's also pricey and tastes bad, not that any of them taste good. Giving it with food can help stomach upset and vomiting, and a licky treat chaser may help them forget about the taste.
Clavamox is amoxicillin and clavulanic acid. Amoxicillin is an extended spectrum penicillin, and clavulanic acid is a "decoy" that inactivates the enzymes that bacteria make that ruin amoxicillin. Some germs become resistant to penicillins by actually making an enzyme that breaks apart the penicillin molecule before it can kill the germ. Clavulanic acid prevents that from happening and can make penicillin as effective as it was back when first discovered. Clavamox is hard on gut flora too, but gut flora is never completely wiped out and returns quickly after such meds are ended.

The heavy dose of Baytril Riker has been on for the past 17 days is working. He's going to stay on the Baytril for another week, then we may go with a week of the Clavamox just to be sure nothing got missed in there. HUGE differences between the Xrays two weeks ago and today. His nose is mostly back to normal color-but does get a little dark for a few minutes here and there, then goes back which is why we're continuing the meds yet. We'll go longer if there are still any symptoms at all.
Anyhow, I promised to share the new Xrays.

I couldn't get the No. 2 to download. And that is the one I really wanted to see. May be my connection. I will try again later. Keep in mind that sometimes these conditions will clear up with Baytril only to return once the treatment is stopped. Quiet often they act like allergies in people. Come and go. Charlie H
Boy...what an improvement! I know it is premature...but he looks almost well in the x-rays.
Wonderful progress!! Thank you for sharing those with us. I have never seen x-rays before you posted yours and it is amazing to see. I now feel I would know (somewhat) what to look for on one if the need ever comes up for me (knock on wood it doesn't). I am so happy for you that Riker is doing so much better. Hang in there Jen and Riker!!!!

Charlie, that 2nd pic took a long time to load even for me-I was worried it might do that to some. If you like, I can email a copy to you-I think it's just big with the one Xray in with the other-and I'm not talented enough in paint to make it easier to work with-but the only way to get it side by side I could think of with the other one. I know this may come back, which is why we're still continuing the meds, and going to go through a different one after the Baytril (Clavamox) to try and make sure everything is out of there. At least now I know what to look for much earlier if it does decide to recur. I know these can be notoriously difficult to be rid of, and from the looks of it, it'd been developing for awhile.
Here are Riker's two previous threads. At first we thought it was respiratory, then Xrays showed he had an infection in his upper jaw/head (lumpy jaw).
Riker came home with us originally with HLP-sick, violent shaking, etc. Treated that, and he got better. Then when he started maturing he also started self-mutilating, and had a UTI. A few months in an ecollar, meds and neutering got us through that. Last Jan.(04) was another UTI, and the only time since June 03 (when he got out of the ecollar) I heard the mutilator noise again. More meds, and he was okay (we thought). Apparently shortly after that he began developing this infection in his jaw that finally showed up a few weeks ago, with symptoms like drippy nose, wet sounding sneezes, chirps that warbled, lack of energy, and dark red nose. I've had to nurse him around the clock for days on end more than once, forcefeedings, etc. for weeks just to pull him through (though without his will to live it wouldn't have mattered). He is a tubby little sweetheart who loves to lay on his back for chin and tummy rubs. He starts the night by climbing under my chin and rubbing his head all over my face and neck, chirping, until he's satisfied I'm marked as his, then he'll play. Loves being in my shirt. He's one special little dude, despite his health issues, my first glider, (my avatar), and I can't imagine life without him. He is priceless to me. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes- he's been through a lot.
Charlie-if you want me to email that, just let me know which address. I'll be home from work about 10:30 pm and will be happy to send it.
