I have a first time joey, and am a little concerned about something. The mom and dad have been really great parents so far (baby is 12 days oop). Tonight I found the baby crabbing/crying very loudly in the wodent wheel all alone way up high in the cage while the parents had gone to the sleepy pouch. I know he was there for at least 20 minutes. I thought it was the parents making a raquet as they sometimes do when mating
(which they never seem to stop doing). When I heard an unusual squeak along with it I realized it was the baby and not them. I removed him from the wheel and he was freezing cold. I knew this was not good and put him in my bra to warm him up. I took mom out of her sleepy pouch and put her in my bra and helped the baby find the pouch opening and tried to get him to nurse, and he did. Mom crabs at him every time he goes to nurse and I have no clue if this is normal or not. I would much prefer to have him be taken care of by his parents, but if he needs outside help I want to do that before something goes wrong. So I hope you all can help me here. Thanks for any help you can give. He's so precious and I just want what's best for him.

Sadly it sounds like the mom is rejecting the joey. I have never had a rejected joey but I'll try to help. Keeping the joey warm is important. Getting mom to nurse is great but keep them surpervised so she doesn't hurt the baby (since you said she crabs at him). There isn't anyone online right now from this board but let me go try to round up some help for you. be back shortly

Thanks! I really appreciate your help. It's almost 3am here and I'm tuckered out but standing guard at the cage to make sure he's ok. I have the wombaroo formula and everything needed in case he needs that. I'm disabled and have nothing but time time and more time, so if I have to feed him on my own.. that's not a problem. I know it's better to have the mom do it, but I will wait to see what you can find out for me first. He has not been injured at all yet. She is just making hissing and crabbing at him a lot. I know she is pregnant again with one or possibly two more babies and I would say from the size that they are about 3 weeks in pouch. She is young too so I know that can be an issue. She is just a little over a year old now. Looking forward to hearing from you and anyone else. I will be keeping watch over this lil guy

So sorry to hear this. I really am no expert when it comes to hand feeding. But it does sound like this little one and mom are having problems. Make sure you read this post HERE it will give you some tips that would take me too long to type.
Does mom shake when the joey tries to nurse? Like she is shaking him off, or is she just making noise? Since you say she did let him nurse, that is good, Check his belly but holding him up, it should be slightly rounded and you might even be able to see some milk. Does his skin stick together when you pinch it, and does it take a long time to snap back into shape- this is a test for dehydration.
I would say if it was me, I would carry mom and joey in a pouch for a few hours to keep an eye on them. For one, if joey lost mom's scent while he was in the wheel, by being in close contact with her in the same pouch, he will get it back, she will keep him warm by being with him, and .... hopefully he will nurse. I would not seperate them right now if she is nursing and caring for him. Is she cleaning him?
You said you have wombaroo milk, do you have a way to give it to him. A small syringe? If so once he is good and warmed you can try to suppliment him. But then put him back with mom.
Pulling a joey is a full time job and not always the best thing as I feel mom knows best. But I do believe in helping/supplimenting. And at 12 days oop, he has a good chance. I will be around for about 30 more minutes to see if you check in. PM if your here and want to talk, I will call you if you send me your #. I can't have you call here, my baby is asleep. Wish I could help you out more.

Thanks sweetie, hearing her hissing and crabbing at him is just awful... poor thing. I took him out of the sleepy pouch since he's not attached anyway. He's happily asleep in my bra but I can tell he's pretty hungry. So I figure I can at least try to give him a small feeding and see how it goes. Just not sure whether to just take over all feedings or just do supplements. I will do whatever it takes. So any suggestions from anyone and I will be on here almost all night waiting for answers Glad you all are here!

She is jerking and shaking him off as well as making noise. They don't mind him climbing all over them, but when it comes to nursing it just doesn't seem to be happening. I'm wondering if because she has another baby or two that this might be a reason why. And they are always together all day in a pouch or in my bra, so losing scent on one another would be difficult (I would think). She was running in the wheel and I believe he was forced to detach after she was done running and she just left him there while she went to the pouch for a nap. She is not letting him stay on long at all when he wants to nurse. As for cleaning, yes, she cleans him and licks him, but then the second he tries to nurse she hisses and jerks making it almost impossible for him. The only way he has been nursing is when I hold her and literally put his lil mouth up against the opening in her pouch. Then it only lasts maybe 3-5 minutes and that's it.

You said she was hissing and crabbing, but was she letting him nurse? Was she shaking? And what was he doing? Why do you think he is hungry? Just trying to get some clues here to help you better, as it's hard to say without seeing the little one. I still think you should not pull him from mom completely, but then.. you are the one there and not me. I would try and suppliment him but keep mom and joey together if at all possible. I will be back in a few minutes to check on you both.

I just checked him for dehydration and he is. Not real real bad but the skin did not go back down right away. So he's obviously not getting what he should. He's also constantly looking for a nipple and even trying to suck on any part of my hand or fingers he can. So he's definitely hungry. I think I am going to make up some wombaroo and see if he will take that. His tummy has no buldge at all, so is probably empty.

We keep posting at the same time Moondanceglider. LOL. I think I am caught up now.
OK, I am no expert and do not know why mom might be shaking, but I know it happens, I wonder if she has some type of pouch infection or nipple irritation. I know it happens in humans. I think a vet check tomorrow is in order.
Now, go ahead and try and suppliment him with your wombaroo tonight and then once he has a full belly, try and put him back with mom. He really needs to be with her. If he is full, he may not try to nurse as much and will just cuddle with parents. You may have to suppliment every 2-4 hours till you find out what the problem with mom/nursing is. If for any reason you end up having to feed completely, you will want to switch from wombaroo to baby bml or another more filling diet. Which you can find here on GC with a simple search. There have been tons of posts on feeding joeys.
The wombaroo should get you through the night and until you can see a vet.

Here is some more good reading on rejected joeys Sheila's website and some stories from Shelia on first time parents. Just look to the left side of her site for CARE and you will find the information there. Sheila has so much experience, I am sure you can learn a lot from her. Also, if you do end up raising this baby without mom and you need any supplies Sheila has everything you might need and I know if you contact her in the morning she will whatever you order out ASAP. I am getting ready to go to bed but will check back when I can.
Best wishes.

Look, we were posting again at the same time. LOL. Hope you have a chance to read some of that information and this little guy eats for you. That is usually the tricky part. Try one drop at a time and don't rush him, you do not want him to aspirate the food into his lungs. Good luck to the both of you.
Good night.

Oh My... ThankYou Dancing.. for finding me and directing me to this post to help out if I can.. I was off on a photoshoot with Morgan.. or I would have seen it sooner, so I do sincerely apologise for that...

It does indeed sound very much to me that Mom is rejecting this little one. I have seen it personally, first hand, with two beautiful sets of twins.. The first time.. I just couldn't do it.. try as hard as I might, I wasn't skilled with that tiny mouth, and even tinier syringe... And the second time.. truth be told.. wasn't all that much easier, and I still lost my wee Sadie.. But Sophie.. my darling Sophie.. is still a testimate to just hard I tried to keep at least one of them alive...

When Mom is crabbing while baby tries to eat.. it could indeed be what QuessDuck has suggested.. a pouch infection.. and sometimes.. only a vet looking inside can tell. I did this multiple times.. but Aspen had no pouch infection.. And many suggested that she just didn't have enough milk to feed her babies.. but yet another trip to the vet proved she was overflowing with milk, she just wasn't sharing it..

The second babies were fading.. getting dehydrated, though I valiantly tried.. so back to the vet for subq fluid shots.. three days in a row.. I just couldn't bare to take them home and do them myself.. though my vet, bless her heart, offered me that option..

Wombaroo just WAS not working.. and I hadn't slept in days.. and with the advice of a friend who'd been there.. I switched to Judie's version of BML babyfied.. (no eggshell or wheatgerm).. and it was a blessing.. so learn from that mistake if you want too, and start with the baby bml, with sweet potatoe and juice for taste and consitencey.. and I am so so glad that I did.

The syringe is the hardest part to master... and it doesn't help that baby wriggle something awful.. Get a small fleece blankie and wrap him tight papoos style.. hands and arms inside so he can't get the grip to break free.. And most most important.. he NEEDS to be warm.. or he will go in to shock, seize up, his jaw will clamp down and he will not, CAN not eat.. Have him in your bra getting toasty while you fill up a couple different syringes.. preferably on a heating pad to keep one warm while you're feeding the baby the other one.. and a couple different fleece blankies fresh from the dryer or microwave would be beneficial, for sure... If that baby isn't warm though.. all your effort will be for nothing...

I definitely still agree with Alicia (QueenDuck).. since baby has been all night with drama and not enough food.. a trip to the vet tomorrow might be vital.. to check Mom's pouch and milk supply out.. but even more important.. getting the baby juiced up with some SubQ fluid.. ask your vet about it, if she doesn't bring it up first and don't take no for an answer if you can help it.. cause it's most definitely a lifesaver when a fair amount of damage has already been done and baby is already dehydrated and weak.. You can feed him the next couple days but if you can't catch him back up to where he should be.. this too will be for naught.. Get him back up to speen with some fluids.. and then start fresh tomorrow with either.. supplementing.. or taking over completely.. but once you make this huge and crutial decision.. there's no going back.. if you pull him.. you must go through with it til the end, whatever that brings.. And if Mom gets frustrated enough.. and she bites him.. it will all go downhill and get worse from here, so pulling would most definitely be my suggestion...

*sigh* I do not envy you if you're forced to pull this little one to save him.. but I will give you a firsthand report that it CAN be done.. it's not easy.. it's hard as nevermind.. lol.. and it's no fun.. and sleeping.. will be a mere Memory for the next seven weeks for You, My Friend.. but if you take this mission on.. I wish you the best of Luck.. and send along all my support and spare energy.. and the confidence that you can see this baby boy grow in to a healthy beautiful apple of your eye.. but don't think you could ever even consider letting him leave you.. once you've been through all that you are about to go through.. He'll be yours for Life.. I gaurantee it.. lol. Good Luck.. and keep us posted on what happens.. what the vet says and how your little one does.. Luv Ames!

..attatchment.. a gorgeous reminder of why you're not sleeping at night.. a face to remind you.. that in the end.. your suffering and his.. will be but a memory.. and he will be the larger part of your heart forever.. just like my Sophie is for me, and always will be.. She believes in you too.. Good Luck.. Luv Ames!

Thanks again I used to hand feed birds so I know how tricky hand feeding can be with wiggly lil things I got some down him and he's zonked out now... so I put him back in the pouch with mom and dad. I hope he sleeps good for a bit and then when I wake up in a few hours I can feed him a little again if she hasn't. Thanks again and I'm checking out the website now.

You should also make sure that she doesn't have a pouch infection that might be causing her to reject the joey. I would have her checked by a vet just to make sure. You can eyeball the pouch and just make sure it's not really red. But if it were me, I'd probably want to make sure there's not a medical reason for this. Good luck with the nursing. You should be okay at this age, if you are able to feed consistently throughout the day. If it were me, I'd just go ahead and use BML, taking out the wheat germ, and watering it down to a consistently the joey cfan handle.

Alicia, Amy, Lucy, thank you all for your help for this little one. Even though I have read every post on rejected joeys, I have never experienced the problem first hand so don't feel comfortable giving advice. I would feel just aweful if I gave the wrong advice and there was a bad outcome. I'm a coward, I admit it!

Moondanceglider, I truely wish you the best of luck with this little one. Please keep us posted on his (and Mom's) progress.

Hiya everyone,

Here's the news from the vet. Tasha (mom) is engorged and is swollen and that's what the problem is. I need to keep her as hydrated as possible and put heat packs on her tummy where the nipple area/pouch is so that it will ease off a bit. You have no idea how great that news is. Baby is doing great and got a thumbs up from the doc He said that if I can introduce mushed up foods as well as bml that it might get him to wean quicker and be a relief for Tasha. So she needed no meds, no injections ... nothing I guess it's good that I have them almost glued to me and notice everything as it happens She also got very upset with me this morning when I wrapped him up and put him in a little pouch and put him in my bra... after about 25/30 minutes she was just about to tear the pouch she was in apart to try to get to him. So at that point I realized this was definitely NOT a rejection. She is just hurting and needed a break from his suckling. I'm doing some substitute feedings with baby bml and hope that will help give mom a bit of a break too.

You all have been so wonderful, and I do not know how to thank you. I just hope some day that I know enough to help someone else in kind. I am posting a lil pic of the baby... he's so adorable!!

Thank you all so much!
Hugs and my love to you all for all your wonderful help and advice.

Ahww. Well that is fabulous news that it turned out to be something to easily relieved.. I am SO glad to hear it.. Indeed, keep us updated.. and good luck with Mom and Baby.. and if you have any problems, and I'm around, I'd be glad to help in any way I can..

And Dancing.. you would have given wonderful advice, I'm just certain of it.. ThankYou for recruiting some help for this lucky baby.. and it looks like he should be just fine. Pat on the Back to You, My Friend.. and while the experience is a wonderful thing.. I wouldn't wish a rejected baby on ANYone.. so much work, (even though it IS so totally worth it).

Luv Ames!

Here's another update for you. Been using warm face cloths right from a dryer to do her warm packs on Tasha-mommy's tummy and she seems to be already doing better. She likes the warmth so much I might end up having to do this on a regular basis even when she doesn't need it.. snickering. Baby is doing good and I try to supplement him 2-3 times a day. Sometimes he's just not in the mood and would rather run around my hands, but when he does eat he sucks down that baby bml He really loves that stuff. I did add a few other things too it (acacia gum and bee pollen) I figured that not only does it sweeten the pot, but it's something they get in the wild and would add more vitamins etc to the diet. Even mom and dad are guzzling it more now that I added those two things. I did leave out the egg shell and the wheat germ since both are hard for baby to digest. Seems mom and dad don't mind that one bit. The only catch I seem to have is keeping the bml warm for the baby while in the syringe. I tried a coffee cup full of hot water from the tap but that cools off way too quickly. Any suggestions?

Thanks for all your help and I added another pic.. this was too funny.. he's sound asleep after eating some bml and did this... giggling

Ohhhh, he is a wee little one. From looking at his legs...he looks as if he came oop. five days or so too early.

It is good that you are putting him back with Mom and Dad. His sucking will help releive some of the over excessive milk. Heat packs will also be comforting to the mother.

Since the baby is not rejected....feed him every four hours so he will be hungry enough to continue nursing off his mama. In a week or two....he should be able to nurse completly from his mother. And then you will be able to have some uninteruped sleep again. :thumb

As to the mushed up foods...those will not be needed. The BML is what is needed for now. The fruits and veggies....babies do not have much of a desire for when tiny. Also, they may cause him to get loose stool. The little one will start going to the food dishes of Mom and Dad when he is between five and six weeks oop. to eat his BML as well as taste what his parents are eating.

For now...enjoy your little one. As he is going to be quite spoiled by time those handfeedings are overwith. By the way, Congratulations on the wee one!

Oh my, he is so adorable! Bless that poor mommy, too! I've been engorged and know the pain. Glad all is turning out well.
