What is the intelligence of SG's? Can we train them to do things?

I think gliders are very intelligent but I also think they have minds of their own and do pretty much what they want. What type of things are you wanting to train them to do? Some things that are "natural" for a glider to do, you can probably "train" them to do it more often by a rewards system (bribery). But I don't think you will be able to train them to do something that is outside their natural actions.

I happen to believe they are one of the smartest animals I know, particularly when it comes to emotional intelligence. However, they are surprisingly intellectually smart. This is why they are hard to train. I have found that with mine a routine schedule and consistency works best. Oscar never wants to go in his cage so in order to get him in i always catch him with his same little blanket and give him a treat. So I would not say I can train him to go in but I can condition his response based on the fact that he knows he gets his treat. Whta are you wanting them to do? I knwo to get them to jump to you you can offer a treat and things like that. Just stay consistent with your behavior and the reward.

I think gliders learn, but it's unlikely that you'll be able to train them.

My gliders have learned that I'm their buddy and I love them, for one. They've also learned that when I walk back toward the reptarium or cage after play time to run up my arm and down my shirt to dodge going back into the cage...lol. And when I pick up the white box with holes in it, to get ready for mealies. But as for training them to actually do any sort of trick or not to go potty on you, as I said, I don't think it's likely. That's just my opinion, though. I could be wrong.

I think they have a reasonable intelligence for their brain size, but training is also hampered by their "attention deficit disorder". They want to jump somewhere just because they're not there right now

Does make them interestingly playful though

Rischa, I'm with you. I think they're incredibly smart (and the smarter the animal, the less likely they are to do what you want them too, because they know what you're trying to do-lol). Go toward the cage= 4 gliders between the shoulder blades where they KNOW you can't get them, move away and they're all over again! I actually think it works in reverse with suggies-they train US. Mine know that if they try eating stuff out of the cage pan (10 minutes after I take the dish no one was interested in) that Mom will go get some mealies for them. They're not really serious about it (eating the gunky dropped leftovers)-they just want my attention and they won't do it unless I'm near the cage at the time. Pretend you're starving to death, and get goodies! I am so suggie-whipped!

all animals can learn...

my suggies are prettie smart. they can hear the crinkle of the yogurt chip bag from across the room and stop what they are doing to run to me and get a treat.

also, one time lilly hopped on chip's cage (who is not noice to her) apparently because she wanted to watch him up close. Instead of sitting directly on his cage she hopped onto my husbands shirt that was draped across the cage so she wouldn't get bit. it was hilarious. he up there watching him where he could not get to her. she looked at us as if to say "see mom & dad, i'm smart. he can't get me here."

I think clicker training would be the best way to go about trying to train them. Check out www.clickertraining.com. Clicker training got started with dolphins, and has really caught on with dogs and now I've heard of cats, rats, horses, parrots, people (gymnasts, ice skaters, etc) and even goldfish being clicker trained. You wouldn't be able to train them to do something that they don't naturally do already, but you may be able to train them to do one of their natural behaviours on cue.

wouldn't the suggies get fat on treats though? cause a click and a treat come together at first.

Their treats don't have to be something that is high in fat. My suggies absolutely love peas. Provided that I didn't give them peas in their regular meals, I would be able to use them as treats.

There is only one thing my gliders like more then peas and that is mealies and I'm not even sure about that! I do know they will take peas over crickets, yogurt, all other fruits and vegies and all the other goodies I give them.

It's funny someone mentioned Clicker training...I started click training Lilo and Stitch the day they came home and now they know to come to me if I click for them once...click twice and they head for the tent or if in the bathroom they go to the pouch in there...Suggies are very smart but I agree that for the most part they train us to do what they want...Stitch will carry stuff with his tail but as soon as I get the camera he drops it immediately...and they both know when dinner time is and if I am 5 minutes late they start barking at me...Your best bet is just to love and enjoy every little thing they do and pray you can get lots of pictures of them doing it because they are sure to never ever do it when you get someone else to come see...

Scarlet, the clicker is actually not meant to be the cue to do something. It is meant to be a signal that they have just earned a treat. I mean, use it however you like, but in actual clicker training, you teach the animal that click=treat. Then you come up with your own cues for different behaviours, and at the moment they do what you are looking for, you click, then you give them the treat. Actually, at first, you don't even try to give any cues. You just wait for them to do something (or maybe lure them into doing it) and click when they do it. Then they figure out, "Hey if I jump to her, (or whatever behaviour it is) she makes that click sound and I get a treat!" Then they start doing it more and that's when you start adding the cue. Then they connect, "Oh, when she whistles, if I jump to her I get a click/treat!" The reason for using the clicker rather than just giving the treat is that it is a very precise marker that makes it easier for them to figure out what they did to earn the treat (sometimes it's hard to get the treat to them the instant they do the behaviour, but if you mark it with the click, they know what they did right).

Bumping to page 1 of active topics because this is an interesting topic for me (I'm very into clicker training and have really been thinking of trying it with gliders).

Anybody out there ever try it?

I haven't tried it, but I plan on trying it with my Serval (when I get him/her). I think it'd be interesting to see how a glider reacts. I think I read somewhere that someone tried it with little or no noticeable results, but I could be wrong .

[:"blue"] There have been a couple of old posts about efforts to clicker train gliders. I don't recall that there were ever any follow-up posts reporting successes or failures. [/]

I know without a doubt that our gliders train us.......they've even trained my husband to feed them worms every morning when he gets up before they go to bed! Which in turn caused me to have to teach him all about mealies because he was feeding them my pupae and its darned hard to get yourself a beetle when your pupae are being devoured on a daily basis!
