I got a IM from a member this morning from a member here on the board. She is primairly an exotic bird breeder. However, she owned 11 sugar gliders that were her pets.
Last night a neighbors house caught fire and her home was filled with smoke. To make this short she now has 35 birds and 3 gliders all at the vet. They are suffering from smoke. She lost 8 of her gliders. The remaining three gliders are not known if they will survive.
As a glider community I thought perhaps we could offer some words of comfort to her. She is devestated and is dazed as to all that has happened. The loss and the guilt are overwhelming.
I wish I could comfort her and also her remaing gliders. It is difficult when one lives so far apart and can only do it with words.
So, Jorji....this is for you. My prayer is God give you comfort in this difficult time. I also ask he be with your remaining gliders as well. May he help them so the do not suffer. God is with you always. May in the days to come..the warm sunlight shine on your face and your heart filled with memories of love. You have been blessed in many ways. <<<Glider Hugs>>>, Judie

I'm crying right now. I can't imagine what you're going through, Jorji. I don't know how long it will take before you check the board, but I hope there is an unprecedented outpouring for you at this time. There are no words. I am so sorry. Relieved that you and your family are okay, but devastated with you at your loss.
Please let us know what we can do to help.

Jorji, I sit here crying with you over your loss. There is nothing I can say or do that will make the hurt go away or bring them back. You are in my prayers, for healing, physically for all the precious babies that survived, and healing of the pain caused you and all the survivors. I will pray for you to have strength as these little guys depend on you to help them thru this, and they will help you. I can't imagine the grief you are feeling, but please just take one day at a time and it will get easier one day at a time. I hope time passes quickly for you all. In the meantime, give each of the littles ones left a snuggle and kiss from me and my babies. (that 4 snuggles, and kisses and 4 hugs for you!) I think this may be a good Real Stories, and I hope you'll agree. Real Stories are for those things that happen that we can learn from, and I certainly have learned as I've grieved this happening today. How quickly can I get my gliders out of my house? What could I do to speed up that process? I suspect there are a lot of us who never really thought a lot about that before today. I hope we'll maybe plan ahead, keep small travel cages handy, perhaps have fire drills? I know Jorji has said she's been second guessing herself today, and I hope she won't -- there's very little any of us can do to be totally prepared for things happening out of out control. But I hope, Jorji, that you take some comfort in knowing that your story may help save other gliders' lives. I know my travel cage goes on permanent standby underneath the cage as of tonight. I hope others will do the same. And with that, I'm going to move this to Real Stories so we can continue to express support and sympathy for Jorji and her family there.

To say I am so very sorry and how much my heart hurts is just not enough. I can only feel the pain that is still there in my heart when I lost my 6 gliders last summer to Aflatoxins. That has never gone away. I still blame myself. But when I look at my babies that made it I thank God and know the others are watching over thier brothers and sisters and family members. My heart aches for you and I pray you will heal soon.
Lucy mentioned cages uder the glider cages. We have been doing that since day one. We just keep little travel cages under each cage and believe it or not about once a month or so we have an animal fire drill. We have 4 dogs too. They have a doggie door to run out of but in case of panic we have a plan for them to. So far after our work we have gottin all six cages of gliders out in less than 3 min.
I would have never really thought we may need this someday. Thank you for being so brave to let us all learn. God bless you and all of yours

Jorgi-from this moment on, healing prayers are headed your way from St. Louis. Please know and try to feel that you are encircled by the love and strength of your Glider Central family. You have sustained an incredible loss, but your lost gliders will live on in your memory and now in our memory. In that way they will live forever. alice

I'm so sorry for your loss. Everyone has pretty much said all I can think of that can be said. I can't imagine losing that many of my babies. I have thought about fire before and have always meant to have a plan, but never have....until now. This will definately help me get one tomorrow. I can only say that it is not your fault. Please, do not blame yourself. Even if you had a plan, something could have happened. My heart is with you and your babies.

Jorji,
I am so very sorry for your loss. I know what you are going through, becuase when I was 8 months pregnant with my 2nd son, our house burnt. We lost everything including a cat. It is very hard to get over it and 7 years later I still cry to think of my baby sometimes. I don't know what to say to you to make you feel better, I just hope your remaining pets are all okay. I am soooo sorry and I will include you in my prayers. God Bless You
I have been thinking about this b-4 it happened to you, but now I will think even more about it. My babies are all at the back of the house where there is no way out and if there was a fire in the front of the house, it would be hard to get them all out. I was thinking of using puches instead of nest boxes for this reason. I could just untie the pouch and run out with them. I would have to take the time to unscrew the nest box, or find something else to put them in. I am truly sorry for your loss, but hopefully other babies will gain by knowledge.
[ 01-29-2002: Message edited by: sugar&spice ]

I don't want to keep saying the same thing, but I am sorry too. I am very glad that you are ok and that you were able to rescue some of your babies. My best friends house caught on fire last winter (fireplace) and they lost their only 2 cats. Although I don't know personally how this feels, I know it hurts to lose anyone special. I wish I could think of something funny to say but unfortunatley I am not a very funny person. There was a post on here ( diet and nutrtion maybe?) about mealworm farms and it made me laugh for some reason. Maybe you will find a post or two on here that will bring a smile to your face. Take care....
