My glider just had 2 babies (yesterday was their first day they were out of the pouch all day), she did fine with them yesterday and they were ok this morning, but when I got home several hours later the mother was eating one of the babies. I have no idea why she would do this!! But she still has the other one with her-so should I leave it with her or take it and try to hand raise it? I'm really afraid she's going to kill this one also!! It hangs on her part of the time, and then she'll just decide to leave it somewhere in the cage (earlier she left it hanging about half way up the side of the cage !). She's very uneasy, and she won't settle down in a pouch or her nest-she just keeps running all aroung... Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

It sounds like she is going to reject the other baby as well. I am afraid you will have to pull the baby but keep an eye on her for now until someone with first hand knowledge can post on here for you. If she looks like she is hurting the baby, PULL IT! Also, joeys can not maintain their body heat at this age so keep the little one warm. If mom is leaving it outside the pouch, take it and keep it warm. Help will be along shortly.

What is Mommy's diet? Also, do you have the recipe for baby BML? Do you have Wambaroo milk on hand? Wrap baby up & keep close to you, let' see if we can find someone to help you.

I'm sorry you're going through this. There is a sticky post at the top of this forum: "How to Hand Feed a Joey" <((~ Click me! Read that, and I'll check back in here with you in a few minutes to see if you have any further questions.

I am going have to agree with dancing it is sound like she is rejecting the baby mabye you pull the baby and warm him up like put him in your bra and hand feed him wombaroo milk if you dont have any you can also feed puppy milk. Like dancing said the babies cannot keep there body heat it is important that you keep the baby warm he can become deydratd very very quickly and die fast. There is a page on gc here that tells how to hand feed a joy.

The parents are on BML. I don't have any Wambaroo milk - where can I get some?? So, can the baby eat the BML without egg shells until I can get some of the milk?

you can order it online. www.exoticnutrition.com has it. You can also use puppy milk.

Make BML without egg shells or wheat germ (otherwise it won't flow through the syringe)
If you don't have Wombaroo, puppy milk will be fine to mix with the BML. A super Walmart or Super Target would probably have the puppy milk (call first), but otherwise just the baby BML will work great for tonight.
Be sure to keep baby very warm, and against your skin.

Is there a male in with the female by chance? The mother sounds like she is really stressed. There needs to be a babysitter in with a young mother....so she can come out to eat without exposing the tiny baby to a possible preditor..... and at the same time....she does not want to leave the tiny one by itself. Stress will also affect her ability to produce enough milk to feed the wee one. This mother does not sound mean...but rather frightened for her babies. Not enough milk...babies become weak and dehydrated...then cold. Then they are usually disposed of...one by one.

Hi everyone, sorry I havn't been able to reply sooner. Well, the baby is still alive and seems to be healthy and strong. She's so precious! Yes, the mother(Gizmo), and father (Neon) were both together, guess I didn't mention him b/c he kind of kept to himself during all of this. He mostly just sat on the front of the cage as if he were confused or something. By the next morning after I took out the baby, they were both acting normal. I'm a little confused about why she would have done that to her baby though...maybe it had something wrong with it or something. But, at least I still have the other baby... Thanks again for all of your help!!

The 2 that I just got were gotten rid of because they ate their last 2 joeys. I've been told that there are several reasons they will do this: poor diet, ill joey, they are frightened and will eat the joey if they think it is in danger (doesn't make sense, I know). It could have been any number of things, but I'm glad the other one is doing alright! Keep us posted!
