hi our glider seems to be sick, she is 5 years or so old, she moves real slow and cant seem to walk very well, sometimes her head and upper body kinda shake, she is eating some, she will sit at the bottom of her cage and put her head straight down to the ground and just sit there she seems weak, not sure if it is calcium or dehydration, not a lot of good glider vets here, should i give her some kinda of calcium boost? milk? yogurt? she seems cold to the touch, i am puzzled she has always been healthy, she is a lil overweight, what can i give her to help her with this? coul dit be lack of sugar? worried glider parent..and her pop seems dark black, and at times is runny, []jha18398@aol.com[/]

Get her to the vet ASAP! Until then, keep her warm (in your shirt is good), check for dehydration ( pull up on the skinn at the back of her neck, if it stays up or goes down slowly, she's dehydrated) Give her water or gliderade. But get her to the vet. I'll go see if I can find someone more experienced.

Is she clicking making a weird noise or anything. Any vet will do if you cannot find a glider vet. Just get to a vet thats the most important thing. Ask for cal gluconate syrum, and make sure they get a fecal smear done. And listen the gliders lungs, make sure they look for dehydration, if dehydrated, make sure they give fluids, and show you how to sub q them, please let us have updates, and I willprsy for you guys. But get to a vet now, just go to any of them and tell them its an emergency, its always an emergency when it comes to gliders ok...please take this seriously

Look in your Yellow pages and see if you see a vet that treats exotics and call and see if they see gliders. You can also go to the bottom of this page and click on vets and it will show states and what vets in Colo members have suggested.

I would do this soon. I agree to hold her and her warm and give her water.

Someone should be along soon that may be able to give a vet's name for you, but I wouldnt wait. I would look now and then Go.
Keep us posted

I am not familiar with the location of Denver. There is a vet in Aurora, 2 in Colorado Springs and 1 in Loveland.

Scroll down this page to the bottom and click vet. Then click Colorado and then click whichever one you are familiar with.

This glider is extremely sick. Appears to be dehydrated and also appears to be suffering for a bacterial ailment. Needs fluids sub-q, antibiotic and possibly a calcium supplement such as Calcionate Syrup given 2 times a day.

Ask vet for fecal float with a cytolgy to see what kind of bacteria is making her sick. Keep glider Warm by pouch carrying her on your body.

At this point .....any vet will do as long as he is willing to see her. Need more help...please post.

In Denver, go to Dr. Kevin Fitzgerald @ Alameda East Veterinary Hospital. (303) 366-2639. They're on Alameda just west of Havana.

I really hope you can get her in to the doctor ASAP. This sounds very serious and I fear she doesn't have very much time left if she's not seen...

Sending good thoughts and prayers for you and your little one.

Head bobbing is a sign or being in resp distress due to possibility of bacterial illness. She is too ill to have much of a desire to eat or drink. This glider is criticaly ill.

Maybe you should take her back to the vet or at least call back to check in. Maybe he can keep her for the night.

I think if your little one is worse, I would agree to take him/her back to the vet. You didn't post what tests this vet ran on her, to come up with the prognosis that she has a bacteria infection? I would just rush to the vet sweetie just to be sure. Sending well wishes and hugs your way!!!

If the infection is in the late stages...it will affect multi organs.

At this stage...supportive care is needed. This can be done by holding and keeping her warm. Let her rest as much as possible. Little one is worn out from being so ill. If the antibiotic is going to help her...the shot will take about 24 hours before you will see an improvemtent. Additional fluids (D5w if the kidneys are not involved) may be needed by the vet to substain her till she is able to eat and drink.

Further vet care can be sought...more than likly she would need to be on oxygen to help her breath as well as sub-q'ing throughout the night at a vet clinic. Most gliders when this severly ill do not pull though, however they are more comfortable and eases the pain till they cross over. However, I do pray she is not this ill.

Sending prayers of comfort to all of you including your little one.

Hold your little one close to your heart as she may be ready to leave you. This will help comfort her to help ease her suffering.

I am so sorry.

Mike, I know of a real good vet there in Aurora, Co. He is at Alameda East veterinarian Hospital. His name is Dr. Fitzgerald. He works with all kinds of exotic animals. He is located off of Alameda Ave. and Peoria. They have a 24 hour emergency basis so please take your little one there with no time to spare.

Keep her close to you and warm. Fluids are critical, and you can put them down with a syringe if she won't drink-any fluids, juice, nectar, water, gliderade, at this point is better than none. In your shirt would be the best place right now. Pet her and talk to her there, and please let us know what the vet says. Prayers and hugs coming your way!

It's calcium defic. get Neo-calglucon a pharacist can give it to you it is a supplement for children with calcium defic. It will save her life garanteed my Stitch had it. Now his hind legs are a little weak but it was because it took a while for the vet to figure out what to do. Has she ever had any tramatic moments with you or anyone or thing? Good luck the med is not that expensive :clapwave: Please PM me with how she is doing.

I am so very sorry I know exactly where you are and it is devastating. When my baby died my husband told me that Akachan was in a far better place. He told me "Akachan is seating in Heaven in a lawn chair eating the heads off the endless supply of freeze dried crickets next to him and toss the rest (that was his favorite thing to do)!" So I guess what I am trying to say is I am sorry and your little girl is have a feast with my Akachan. You are in my prayers I promise your crying will not stop for months. Akachan died in May and to this day I still cry. Cry it is good and dream of the great times you had and the great place she is.
With Tears and Love,
Moochachos

Mike,

I am sorry for your loss. I couldn't help tearing cause I lost my boy to similar symptoms and I didn't have the knowledge or idea to come here and ask questions. It made me wonder about whether or not I should be a glider-mom. Don't question yourself about it. And, the pain Will subside, but she will be with you in your memories always.

Regards,
