I left a message for my breeder asking about a few good vets in the area, since I am fairly new here, and he said that alot of people nueter their own gliders. is this normal? it sounded a little bizare. i am going to go to a vet to have it done, i was just wondering if anyone had heard of this???

I have NO idea how you could neuter a glider yourself. shakehead I can only imagine it's very inhumane, and not something you should try.

It's sadly been heard of. I think the general concensus is that it is quite inhumane and very painful for them...

Kudos to you for doing your research and having a professional do it - I'm going to be doing the same thing here shortly and I can't even imagine doing that to my Aiden... He's going to have all the pain meds his little body can handle, and it's going to be the laser procedure because it heals faster and is less invasive.

out of the 22 rescues i had neutered only 1 needed one dose of pain meds. my vet did leave the pom. not one had any other problems and all went straight back into the cage with their family.

There is a person on Ebay that has a website stating that it can be done and that she does it. I emailed her to find out what she was talking about (I played dumb). She then informed me that she only does it under her vet's care. Either way, it's a stupid thing to do. We that are not medical professionals have no business whatsoever neutering any animal.

We paid $165.00 to have our boy neutered in December, left his poms on, 2 tiny stitches inside that dissolved and nothing else. We were given antibiotics (Baytril) to give him for 10 days in case of infection and Torb for pain. I gave him the torb only 2 times the first day. He did great and didn't get ill at all. He was back to his old self within 2 days running all over. smile

He never bothered his surgery area once.

I can't understand why people throw out this info on the net about the "do it yourself" medical treatments and claim they love animals. What is more disturbing is the ones who actually believe these things without verifying the information with true professionals. Lots of people end up with sick, malformed or worse with their pets by thinking they are saving money.

Weird, I just posted something about this on another post (Looking to give gliders a forever home).
There is someone who was claiming to be a glider rescue but I know them and know they are not...Anyway, (visit the post to read more)they neuter their gliders themselves by wrapping a wire around the poms until it falls off!

I dont understand how some people sleep at night. I REALLY hope these people dont have kids, those type really should not be reproducing!

Whether they show a need for post neuter pain meds doesn't indicate whether it hurts-just how well that glider handles it. It's done by tying off the scrotal sack tightly, with string, wire, rubberband, etc., in most cases, and waiting for it to die and fall off. It is extremely painful. A sharp blade for an incision isn't going to be nearly as painful, even without meds-but even then some gliders hurt enough to SM. Yes, some do it (and I think the practice is cruel and unusual punishment, and it should be considered animal cruelty and punishable)-before surgeons/modern vetpractices neutering wasn't done very often, except on farm animals out of necessity, and not on companion animals but very, very rarely, if ever, that I'm aware of.

Also whether they show a need for pain meds would have to do with how well the vet preformed the procedure. Just because A vet can do it and the glider does well and doesn't need pain meds doesn't mean that YOU can do it and all will be fine.
Cookie is going to be neutered as soon as we can and I can't imagine doing it myself. God that just sounds so cruel. Thankfully you have looked into it without just taking there word for it.
Poor little ones...

I think I may need to clarify something. Our boy got the Torb 2 times the first day, however, I stayed with him during surgery and he came home with me at 5 pm. Our exotic vet said to give him the torb every 2 to 4 hours for pain. I never left his side, so I didn't wake him up to take it since he was sleeping.

I was terrified of him SM'ing so I kept him and his mate on me until I KNEW he was fine. They had 2 joeys due OOP anytime and they came 1 week after he was neutered.

Dr. Williams also said to give him the Torb app. 15 minutes before the next was due so he wouldn't have any pain to begin with.

He doesn't look much different "down there" cept smaller and his bald spot has already gone away.

I don't want anyone to think he didn't get pain meds if needed. He did. He bounced back quicker than some I have read about. He is also a very large glider at 286 grams.

Does the breeder you are getting yours from do this? If so maybe you should consider going to another breeder. In farm animals its called banding, basically a tiny elastic band is opened up on the bander and places over the testicles and left till eventually they fall off, to do this must cause considerable pain and Im sure a glider would self mutilate. People should leave it to the experts and not try to cut costs.

I have heard of neutering the male yourself, but I can't believe someone would recommend doing that. Who neuters their own dog?

Sadly, there is a breeder in Ohio who does her own neutering cry She even "rationalizes" it on her web site tant
In my opinion, medical practices should be left to the medical professionals who went through many years of advanced education to learn proper procedures. If you find a breeder who does their own neutering, you should avoid them - that's my opinion!
Another factor with breeders that neuter the joeys on their own is the fact that oft-times the joeys are very young when they do it. Are the testicles even dropped into the scrotal sac yet? There's a lot of debate about that question, but the general concensus is that they aren't. So that leaves the question of what happens to the testicles when they are ready to drop and there's no sac to drop into??? dunno

edited to add:
If anyone in the Ohio area wants to know which breeder this is, please PM me and I will give you the information and the link to her website.

Bandit goes in the 30th for his neutering and I am having anxiety about it now. I cannot imagine someone 'doing it themselves'. That has to be the epitome of cruelty! The vet I am taking him to normally removes the pom, but I told him I want it to remain, so he will leave it. (He said he has never had any issues with removing it, but I think the 'less' he has to remove, the better!) Timmy will be next (I will need meds myself for that one....lol) I just want happy, healthy gliders. I will (hopefully) get to experience a joey with Piper (still has a very good sized lump there and she actually let me rub it again yesterday!) I am not counting out Timmy and Gidget yet, as Timmy has definitely been attempting to breed with her (whether he has succeeded, I do not know.) Either way, I will be fine. I have not decided if I will keep Piper's joey(s) or not, but have a friend who is interested if I chose to rehome it/them. IF Timmy and Gidget do have any (before he is neutered) they will stay here. But than as I said, I have never had a joey, so whether I will be able to even give up Piper's remains to be seen! lol (There is a good reason I never breed ANYTHING! lol)

Well, thank you all again and I will keep you posted.

I have seen many people neuter horses and cattle themselves, and it is incredibly traumatizing for these animals. A friend's gelding was gelded by her father with a pocket knife and some peroxide. There's a horrid risk of infection especially considering the risk of feces and urine infecting an open wound. Even banding the glider's testes could cause infection. It's no different than tying a band around your wrist until your hand falls off. It sure doesn't sound safe to me.
From now on when I look at an altered glider I will be sure to ask how he was altered.

Truthfully this use to be done alot with farm animals but even there this is not practiced much anymore. Most farmers feel that it is barbaric and do not do this they call the vet out for a neutering day where the vet does all that need it at once.

We get them in here with big scars and horribly tramatized. We live 2 miles from a breeder who self neuters.

I think we should take a band and band it around the breeders own jewels and see what happens....how they would like it...im am sure the tables would be turned then!!!
