Well To get complete trust from them it takes a while maybe up to a year.

I was lucky in that Peepers came to me very sweet, so it was hard to tell when she bonded because she never did bite or crab. I don't mean to be discouraging to you by saying it was so quick for us, but since the topic name sounds like a survey, I just wanted to let people know, sometimes it can be. I didn't even know what crabbing sounded like until I'd had her almost 2 weeks and something spooked her!

All the time I was researching, I kept reading these stories about how scared they are when they first come home, and how long it takes to bond. The breeder kept saying, "Not with my babies", but I didn't really believe her until I got mine.

Im workin on my third week now and there has been some progress, but its a slow go. They will come around it can be anywhere from days to weeks to months and longer. Depends on how much you spend with them. Goodluck

Lilly (rescue) began to bond almost instantly. She came as a major biter but came around within two weeks. after about a month she was my best friend

Rufus (bought as a joey)took longer. he was always crabby and steve wanted to name him striker because he struck ay EVERYTHING! He bonded to Lilly then she showed him to bond with me. That took about two months.

Chip (rescue) he was sweet when we got him. but he has not yet truly bonded. we've had him a couple months and he is not coming around as well as the other two. he has trust issues. but at least he's sweet.

Chip and Ozzy were probably about a month before fully bonded. We got them when they were 8 wks oop. Murphy we got when he was 12 wks oop. It took him a couple weeks longer. All three of them came from breeders that handled them regularly. They probably quit crabbing and were pleased to be with Zack in about two weeks.

Bandit and Allie are 2yo rescues I've had for five weeks. I honestly expect it will take another month or so for Bandit, but probably another 2-3 months before Allie fully trusts me (although both have come a long way!!!)

I'm still working on bonding with mine, about week 3 also. But they're getting so much better! Last night I was able to hold one for about an hour while he curled up in my hand and slept. The other skittered all over (I've got tiny little scratches all over my arm! ) me but later fell asleep on my mom's chest. It was just adorable, sometimes they're still a bit crabby so it will be awhile before they fully trust me. I'm off to a good start though.

i've had 8 week old for 5 days now. the 1st 3 days she'd sleep in my pocket, my hand or where ever. the last two days she's been biting all the time and seems restless.

i guess i'm doing something wrong but i have know idea what that would be. i've been interactive with her at least 4-5 hours a day...could that be too much handling too soon?

maybe we are debonding...lol.

[:"brown"]I've had mine 4 weeks. Both females are bout 4 yrs old and I've only been using the bonding routine for a couple of weeks. They don't crab, but one nips my fingers sometimes. The other scampers all over me. I've had them sleep inside my shirt, but I can only do it in the evening after work, so after resting a few minutes, they're ready to wake up and explore! The friendliest one did jump out of the cage door yesterday right onto my chest! OMG they are so cute! It's hard to be patient. BUT, I'm glad everyone has posted that it could take more time. I was thinking I must be close, but I'll bet I've got another two or three weeks, at least (right?) before we've got a strong bond between us. [/]

Hi All,
I just adopted Pretty, a year old female. Pretty wasnt handled the first year of her life, and was not raised with other gliders. I think she may have even been abused by her previous owner. She is extremely agressive and crabby, and will draw blood every time. Its been a frustrating week, especially since my other two gliders (Gizmo and Nemo) were so easy to bond with. Hopefully time and persistance will prevail. I will keep you updated, and any advice will be warmly welcomed.

Mitch

If there really young then the bond fast but the older they are the harder it is to bond.

[:"#330066"] About 15 seconds lol. She was a real sweetie and very very friendly. But actually bonded- I would say 2 months. Now she will play with other people, but if she gets scared she scampers right back to me and in my hood, pocket or whatever. [/]

Mitch, hang in there. I have a pair of adult rescues and it is a completely different experience from bonding with a joey. The male will draw blood any time you don't have food in your fingers, the female is crabby and scared, but has learned that I am the Great Provider of Mealies! After five weeks I can tell a huge difference with them. We have a long ways to go, but step-by-step we're moving along. A friend of mine suggested keeping a journal to record their progress. Remember to celebrate the baby steps, Pretty will come around, it may just take a while.

JellyBean and Twizzler took a couple weeks to get used to me, but weren't fully bonded until probably a month and a half afterwards. They are very bonded to me now Twizzler even calls to me and talks to me!!

I am ten months into the process with Sugar and Spice, and further along with Sugar than Spice. I am their third owner (got them when they were about a year and a half OOP), and I think they are finally starting to clue in to the fact that whenever I go away, I always come back. They are very bonded to each other and weren't handled a lot by previous owners. I think it is has been difficult for them because they have switched people so many times. I do see improvements, but I would be lying if I said that it is going as fast as I would like... Spice won't let anyone pick her up, but I can pick up Sugar and she always stays on my shoulder for a while. Both of them let me pet them while they are eating, and both will come over to me when I am near their cage. I still get crabbing from Spice, but never from Sugar. They don't lunge or bite anymore. I have to remind myself how far we have come when I feel sad about how slow things seem to be going. But things are getting better, and I am grateful for that.

10 months is pretty much right on track when dealing with most rescues. That's what happens when people get gliders then give them up... it makes them harder and harder to bond with. That's one of many reasons why people should take the decision to get gliders very seriously. These 2 are sure lucky to have found Sarah, who is sticking with them and being so patient and loving.

Aww... thanks, Natalie! I do appreciate knowing that I'm not behind in the bonding process. Sometimes I fret about how long it's taking. The gliders I had weren't abused in their previous homes; the owners just didn't have much time for them. I still feel sorry about them having to be moved from house to house three times in eighteen months - I'm doing the best I can to ensure that this is their "forever home"!

Its good to hear about others bonding with adult gliders. I've had Bandit and Allie for about five weeks. Both are about 2 1/2 yrs oop. Bandit had an owner who gave him up due to health issues, and then was at a rescue for about 10 months before coming to me. Allie lived in two homes and at one rescue in her first year and a half and then another rescue for 10 mos. Needless to say, she has trust issues.... but, she's come a long way since she first arrived. Thanks again for sharing,

~Lynn

I just got my first glider about 3 weeks ago (thanks Chey). Her name is Emma and she is the sweetest baby you could ever have. I bet everyone says that about their glider! It took me about 4 hours for her to really take to me and by the next day I had her sleeping in the pocket of my t-shirt. Now she doesn't even like my girlfriend and she was supposed to be hers in the first place, lol!!

I know this sounds strange but sometimes I wonder about the bond I have with Dexter. He was about a year old when I got him. He has been with me for 5 1/2 years and although I know he loves me and trusts me I wonder about the bond. I think some gliders are just more independent then others. Dixie is still my sweetie. She came to me also about 5 1/2 years ago as a wonderful little joey (thanks again Judie!!) Chip and I are having to start all over now. I had him neutered and now he is just mean as all get out. He never bit before and rarely crabbed but now????!!!!!! We are going to start intensive bonding time again and I hope he gets over being mad at me. He will briefly let me pet him while he is eating but I don't dare try to pick him up (unless I want blood drawn). Dexter was neutered a week later and acts like nothing has changed thankfully. My twins are also soooooo different. Dayla is so sweet and just can't wait for me to come get her. KoKo is still so crabby and I just don't understand why. I have handled each twin since day one oop.
The key with them is patience. I know this but sometimes it gets so frustraiting!!!!!
Tent time is such a blessing with all my suggies. I think more then anything this has made the biggest difference with them.

ive had mine for a little over 2 weeks and hes still not bonded to me i can pet him but i cant hold him yet or he will bite i got him from a pet store and hes 6 months and i dont think anyone held him before me so i guessing its going to take him a little while to get used to me and to feel complete trust but everyones telling me it will be worth it in the end so im willing to just keep him in his pouch on my lap until he feels like he can trust me

well... I'm working on week three for my girls and as for my boy, we've been working together for about 8 months or so... no crabbing just an occasional bite is incurred.
