Hi,

I just got two 9wk gliders (neutered male and female) about a week ago. They are doing well, except that the female is extremely filthy...I have used the q-tip trick, but I can't seem to get all the dirt off! It's mostly urine and feces, matting down her entire tail and part of her belly. I have been cleaning in patches over the course of the past week to avoid hypothermia, but she can't seem to get clean. I know I shouldn't use soaps, but I'm afraid I'm irritating her skin by rubbing her down with the wet cotton so frequently...any tips?

Thanks!

Warm damp washcloth. Wrap her in it and sort of gently rub her/let her wriggle. Then make sure she is cuddled up and warm until she is dry.

i've never tried it, but I've seen this suggestion posted.

I have those baby wipes for my gliders. seen it suggested on GC. the only thing that worries me about those is they are cold. Wonder if you could microwave for a few seconds just to warm them up?

She needs to be seen by a vet ASAP! There is no reason for a glider to have urine and feces stuck all over them unless they are ill. Please have her seen.

Agreed with the above...if what you're describing is accurate, it sounds like this is more than just a little dirt. I've never seen my gliders get matted in any way due to normal, healthy voiding of urine or feces, and I'd be deeply concerned if they became that soiled.

Please let your vet determine a root cause for this (i.e., neglect from previous owner/breeder, illness, etc.), and help remedy it. If it's already been matted on for a week straight while you've tried the basic cleaning techniques, it may take a vet's help to get this little one back into tip top shape.

Let us know how it goes, but please do head to the vet.

That's what I was going to do.... warm them up for about 15 seconds.

I've seen Leela get wet from running in her wodent wheel and "using the bathroom." Her tail and sometimes her belly will get wet and then when it dries her fur is all spikey looking, but she will groom later and it looks better.

I agree with the other's, you should get your baby to the vet b/c she should be keeping herself clean and since she isn't, it could be a sign that she is sick.

off_topic Just slightly off the center of the topic, but for anyone interested in fancy high tech baby stuff that can be used for this purpose, there is an actual baby wipe "warmer" you can buy to warm them automatically. smile Also, if you do ever put wipes in the microwave, be sure to test them on the inside of your wrist before ever touching a human or fur baby, as 15 seconds in one microwave might blast the heck out of it and make it very hot, while another smaller/less powerful microwave will just make it toasty. smile

Thanks for the advice, guys! These are my first two gliders, so I am a novice.

I rushed her to the breeders I got them from, and they said that she needed to be medicated. Since she is so young and obviously anxiety-ridden, they decided to keep her permanently, and I received a better-adjusted female.

I feel like a bad mother, switching out my gliders...but since the bonding process was not complete and she needed medical attention, the breeders and I felt like it was a good decision.

I'm so glad that you decided to get help for the little one, and I do hope the breeder will take good care of her and get her the meds she needs. How old is the new little girl?

Did the breeder say what they thought was wrong with the baby? Is it something contagious that you should have your other glider checked for?

I think this was a wonderful decision, and I'm VERY proud of you for thinking "for the good of the glider" instead of just saying "I want *this* one!" Thumbs up...great caregiver choice, novice or expert! laugh

I, too, would be interested to learn what this was caused by once your breeder has more information. This is something I am not familiar with, so it could really be a wonderful learning and education tool for me and those of us seeking to learn from the experiences of others.

Do not feel like a bad mom...you did the right thing and you know what? You may just have done a noble right job of saving the little one's life!

Please do keep us updated, and congrats on your new suggie...does she have a name? We're all here and we'd love to keep hearing about both of the gliders! laugh

Love and Smiles,
Jen

The sick girl (Molly) was 9 weeks OOP as of yesterday. She was much smaller than my male (Desmond). My breeder says that he likes to keep them for 9-10 weeks for observational purposes, but felt that they were ready at 8...Des was, Molly wasn't.

All the breeders said was that she had a really bad case of "the runs", so to speak...and needed some tummy meds and needed to be relieved of all of her stress (returned to her original colony).

So, the reason why I named them Desmond and Molly is because of The Beatles song "Oh-Bla-Di, Oh-Bla-Da" ('desmond has a barrow in the marketplace, molly is the singer of a band..etc.) Now I'm not sure if I should name the new female "Mollie" or some other variation to keep the theme, rename both as a new pair, or just rename the girl...opinions?

off_topic - that is funny- the names of course. I wouldn't take my husband's name (Jones) 'cause my name is Molly. I told him he would have to change his to Desmond! roflmao

I think using the same name would be okay - jmo.

I just love it...Desmond and Molly...perfect!

I think it's entirely up to you. I personally had really wrinkled my little brow over choosing names, and made a list a mile long but couldn't officially choose the names until I was sure they "suited" my glider's personalities. But I'm a bit of a nut, so don't go by my lead! wink

I think Molly is a great name and it obviously has meaning to you...great song! If you come up with something else, though, run it by us tough critics and we will let you know our thoughts, too! laugh

The wipes made by Nature's Miracle for animals are safe for gliders and other animals. They are great for small clean-ups.

If you have had a sick glider, you might want to thoroughly clean your cage, wheel and toys.
