Please help me out everyone! Ok, I've been thinking about this for a while, even dreaming about. I'm obsessed! So this cage I want to build is going to be 5'hx6'wx2'd there will be a divider that can be put in or removed to make it 1 cage or 2. I attached the plans as they look at this point in time. I would like some opinions and help improving the design. Please critique or ask questions. I appreciate the help!!!
Now, I see that you are planning on making it using a LOT of plywood...If you do, it is going to have to be coated VERY VERY well (the smaller 2X2's that most use for the frame I always suggest a minimum of 5 coats. Plywood would not be my first choice. If you want a wooden frame that would be fine but I think I would leave the back of the cage and the top just coated wire. As for the divider I think I would go with plexi-glass over plywood. Those are just my opinions on it. They actually have cage dividers you can purcase. Also, have you considered how you are going to be moving it outside for good scrubbing? Make sure you can not only get in and out of the doors but also around any corners you may have to go around.
Just my two cents! Good luck with it!
Awesome point about the plywood. My original thought was not only to keep out drafts, but to prevent messes on the walls. But maybe I'll try using a cloth to pin to the back of the cage, then it will be washable. And as far as the moving of the cage....well...good point, I'm pondering. If anyone has a good idea as to how to make it collapsable...or something....I'm open to ideas!
I saw a friend once who had something like this, but his opened at the top and sat down inside a base so that he could lift it out, flip the top back and fold it to the side. Would something like that work?

If you give me a day or two, I'll post pictures of my cage. It's similar to yours in consept, but it's 1 cage on top of another... It's nice and big though, 6 foot tall, 3 feet wide and 2.5 feet deep

What about two cages that could sit side by side and have some sort of clasp to hold them together. Also, there is stuff called melimine that is 1/4 inch thick and used for shower walls. It is washable and thin enough to use two peices for the center divider (it is only water proof on one side). Another advantage is it is light in weight then plywood. Down side is it is slick so the gliders couldn't hold on to it to climb. This could be countered by either wire or some attached wood slats or even some sort of fleece web. I would go with the cloth hanging on the back because it can be washed and you can change colors easily if you decide to do different decorations. Lots of people decorate their suggies homes for the different holidays.

For the cloth, you could still use the plywood, then apply velcro to attach vinal (sp?). Then you could take down the vinal regularly to change out/wash. You may have to buy a cheapy vinal tablecloth and have your gliders "climb test" it. As far as colapsability. You could hinge all four corners, then make the top and bottom removable. Put wheels on the thing, then you could make it flat & roll it out the door.
Wow, great ideas! I've got some serious pondering to do. The reason I like the idea of having a divider but still having the cage put together is so that I can take the divider out and have one great big cage for my furbutts to play in. As far as the plywood, I think I'll use cloth instead. It will still have the wire back, but a layer of cloth between the cage and the wall, instead of wood. Any more suggestions?
Are you making the doors out of a different type of wire? That has been the hardest thing with my cage that I built is the door. There is a small one on there right now, but I am going to have to put a larger one on there this weekend and I am having a difficult time trying to figure out what to do.
I'm making the doors out of the vinyl coated (VC) wire too. Everything is going to have a wood frame, including the doors so that I wont have to use bread ties anymore. The cages I have now are just the VC wire and zip ties on the corners. the wire is bending on the sides and the doors are needing so many ties to keep it shut that it takes me forever to untie them, so my new cage will have a frame to prevent all that.
