In researching the different feeding plans, I notice that some of them call for a staple food to be kept in the cage at all times. In the year I've been owned by my boys, I have never seen them awake during daylight hours unless I wake them purposely for a snack. So, I was wondering if any of you keep a 24/7 staple in the cage (and if so, what would that staple be) and if any of your babies become active or forage during the day?

i notice that Misos gets up occasionally during the day. i feed Priscilla's diet. so that means his staple is Monkey Biscuits && SG Cereal. i don't offer it everday, just a few times a week, b/c he doesn't get up during the day everyday. && if he does, he normally gets a mealie snack. on the days that i do give the staple, i take it out when i give him the diet icecube so that he'll eat his food. then replace it with fresh

I was putting in a staple food. After a month and a half and several different kinds, and it never got touched... I stopped. I do have a dish in their cage that I put treats in, like dried fruit, nuts, yogies and sunflower seeds. But even then, they never eat it till later at night.

Yup, that's what I thought. I did the monkey biscuit, glider cereal thing for weeks and it never got touched. Now I handfeed them a bedtime snack of mealies in the morning before I leave for work and before they go to sleep.

I'm well aware of aflatoxins. I'm afraid I'm one of those that aren't going to avoid things just because "maybe something might happen someday". If that was the case, they wouldn't get corn, mealies, grapes, chicken, eggs, etc. etc.

I AM however, very careful about where I purchase my goods. I avoid the peanuts and crickets because they have been proven to contain high amounts of the Aflos'. I feed holistic and I buy only from an organic health food store, and goods are grown here in the US. But I'm not going to run scared over every little thing I read here. I also feed my animals raw meat and bones, and my vet just told me my 15yr old chihuahua is extremely healthy for a dog of his age, and he's NEVER been to the vet for an illness (knock on wood) other than an abscess from a knock in the face w/ a door.

But thank you for watching out for me, Holly. smile

The SunCoast diet uses a staple food. My gliders usually devour all of their allotment during the night so there's nothing left during the day.

I do. It never gets touched during the day, but eaten at night. I guess I still offer it during the day "just in case" I would feel awful if I didn't make it home for their usual dinner time (accidents do happen) and they had nothing to eat.

I will share what I do, and then I have a question on this topic because I don't understand part of it. smile

My gliders are in my bra with me during the day, and they sleep like logs, so they don't wake up to eat at all during they day. Even if I wake them up, and I have experimented with it after reading about other people feeding gliders during the day for treats and hydration and such, they will not eat. They are comatose, I tell you! laugh I literally have taken a mealie and waved it in front of their little cute pink noses, to no avail. I get a blank stare like, "it's too eeeeeaaaarrrllllyyy" and they go back in! laugh

My question on this then, which may be totally ignorant and for this I apologize (and hope to improve upon it), is this:

Do your gliders stay in the cage during the day instead of a bonding pouch, bra, pocket, etc.? When you talk about leaving out food during the day for them, are you talking about it because they are in the cage all day? I guess I would not be applicable here if that is the case. I DO keep very fresh clean water in their bottles at all times for hydration, and I make sure that whenever they are IN the cage (overnight after playtime through morning before I get them out) they have fresh food. I used to have staple food out but as others have said, they just never touched it. ;D

Thanks guys...:)

We use both the cereal and the biscuits and both gangs love them.....they always nibble on the biscuit and we put a very small container (like a tea lite) with the cereal and they like that too.....we have loco girls who are often up at random times during the day...just our two cents

My two gliders are on Priscilla's and they really seem to like their sugar glider cereal, but I've never seen them out and about during the day time to eat it. They eat it at night and one pinch lasts them about two days before it's reduced to pieces. They seem to "snack" on the monkey biscuit, but not very much.

I have tried leaving some small amount of ZK in the cage during the day and my two SG have never woken up to eat it - so I just end of throwing it away..... now what to do with the bag of Monkey Biscuits I purchased as well? - lol lol lol.

Rhapsody, I feel your pain! I've just been using the ZK and the monkey biscuits (softened with a little juice or Gliderade) once or twice a week along with their regular diet. The do eat small amounts of both this way and, I guess, no harm done.

Krystie - I appreciate your stance. I'm also one who thinks we can't jump at everything. If you study human health over the centuries, it seems like everything that was once thought to be good for us now causes cancer, and vice versa!

However, you have been having sick gliders. The symptoms of your gliders are not completely unlike Laura's gliders, who did die of Aflatosis. Perhaps you may want to reconsider your stance in regards to your gliders?

I'm a firm believer in "if it isn't broken, don't fix it." However, that isn't really the case with what you've been experiencing lately.

OK....silly question, when do you take the food out of their cage?

My babies are usually ready for their mealtime around 6 or 7 in the evening (sometimes earlier). This is when they eat mealies, a little BML and/or yogurt and a few fruits/veggies (they usually go for the peas). They eat then they nap for about an hour or two then it is tent time. When I put them back after tent time they eat fruit, usually through out the night. When I wake up for work they are up, playing and snacking so I don't want to take it away from them. So basically the fruit/veggies are in their cage for almost 24 hours.

Is this wrong?

Not a silly question at all! Each morning, remove any food that you put in the cage at night for dinner. They will eat, nap, play, eat some more, play some more, nap some more, throughout the night.

I wouldn't leave the fruit and veggies in the cage all day. Not only can it attract fruit flies (not something you want!), but it can go bad. If you're offering the BML diet, then remember that the rule of thumb, per glider, is 1 tablespoon of BML, 1 tablespoon of fruits, and 1 tablespoon of veggies, so 3 tablespoons of each food group, per night, for your 3 babies. You might be leaving out too much food each evening. dunno

Oh, I forgot to answer the original question on staple foods. Since gliders are nocturnal, leaving a staple food in the cage during the day is pretty much like leaving a sandwich by your night stand just in case you wake up and get hungry. Chances are, you won't, and don't, need to eat that sandwich. Chances are, they won't, and don't, need (and therefore don't eat) the staple food. Now, some of us do wake up and eat whatever is put in front of us! tounge

I have three bra babies, and mine only rarely seem oblivious if I'm eating an apple or carrots or even preparing their BML in the bowl for the night. At least one nose will poke out and start twitching, and the others follow, wanting a snack. What I offer during the day is subtracted from the portion they get for that evening.

Wantiki2, that's a good question on the symptoms of aflatoxins. Would you mind starting a new thread so it won't get lost in this one? All I can direct folks to (at the moment) is our sticky, How to reduce Aflatoxin in Nuts.

OK, thanks for the info. I know my chubby little girls are given too much food, and I have been cutting their food down gradually. I don't want to do it suddenly because I can't stand the thought of them being hungry and having nothing left (yes, they are completely spoiled). So, I will give it a try, taking out their food in the a.m. and leaving in a staple food. I hadn't even thought that they are eating just because it is there and not necessarily because they are hungry.

My boys are in a bra-pouch when I'm at home and will sleep like logs unless I offer them a treat. The rest of the time, when I'm at work, they stay in their cage. I do keep water available 24/7 and, when I first got them, tried to keep a dry food in there, too, but it never got touched.
