Hi All!

I recently adopted Jackie Chan - a 10 month old male who has suffered a back injury leaving him with paresis. It is not total paralysis, as he has some use of his back legs. He will use them somewhat when climbing in the cage, but drags them when climbing on me or when walking across any flat surface.

Anyway, all is going well with him, but I think things could be better. For starters, I am stuck in indicision about a new cage for him. He DOES need one - his current one is too small and not appropriate for gliders. Anyway, he LOVES to climb, despite his injury. I cannot keep him from it - he pretty much stays away from the bottom of the cage unless I put him there. So, I struggle with getting him a larger, taller cage. I know he loves to climb, but I am afraid of him getting hurt again. So, should I get a taller cage and load it up with hammocks to protect him, or should I go with larger, but not so tall??? Suggestions?

Also, with the dragging of his back legs, I am concerned about him catching himself on the cage if he is to crawl around the bottom. Am I just being paranoid?

Furthermore, his injury has left him unable to maneuver to clean himself well. His lower back gets quite dirty and he is not able to clean it. Also, with the dragging of his back legs, his legs get dirty fast, though he is able to clean them better. So, what is the safest way to clean him? Is it ok to do it more than once a day? What products, if any, are safe.

Thanks! He really is a great glider! Taking him out of the situation where he was confined to the basement has done him so much good, but now I want things to be even better! Any suggestions would be helpful. grin

I think the taller cage with lots of hammocks and soft cushy stuff would be good for him. I think there are some others on the board somewhere with gliders that have trouble getting around and they have given advice about this. Hopefully they will be able to help you more. I have a glider that has a hard time cleaning herself because she has teeth issues. I will dampen a cloth with luke warm water and just kind of wipe her off. I then dry her with a dry towel and keep her on me until she is totally dry. They get too cold way too fast and I don't want her to get sick. She hates when I clean her but she seems happier once she is clean. Just be careful that he doesn't get too cold. I'm glad he is happier being with you and that he is getting lots of love. Hope I have been of some help to you both. Cute name!

Yes, I got him over the weekend. No x-rays, so I will get right on that. I have an appointment with the vet on Friday. He sustained the injury about 2 1/2 months ago and then was put down in the basement due to allergies/asthma. Since then, little has been done for him, so I am determined to do as much as I can for him!

Thanks for the contact info in the pm. I will get in touch with them for sure!!!

I would get him the taller cage and then load it up with hammocks so that if he falls he has a soft landing. That's what I did for my Pika - she was completely blind and had also suffered HLP so had residual joint stiffness in her hind legs from that. She still loved to climb, so I compromised with the hammocks thumb You'll notice in this picture, that one of the hammocks is on the cage floor, about 2" from the wire grid... This helped prevent her from having her legs fall through the gridwork.

As for cleaning, you can use Cottonelle Fresh Wipes (found near the TP in most stores). That brand is safe for suggies. Just use a dry towel to completely dry his fur afterwards... It is safe to use them multiple times daily - I've had to do so with hand-raising rejected joeys and never had any problems with them...

i have a 3 legged glider and i have him in a tall cage with a hammock that goes all the way across the cage because he loves to hang from th top of the cage and eat mealies and rasins and if he does fall he lands on the hammock and then he crawles where ever he wants to in the cage he eats most of food on the hammock so you might have to clean it off alot as i do i clean it off everymorning good luck with your glider an keep us updated
