Messing up the walls #30461

Im curious to know how much of a mess a glider will make to my walls if the cage is by one. I read they love to hurl there food every where. However I did read about getting a critter hut to reduce that?

My question is if I can get the food under control and I going to have an issue with the peeing all over my wall? Obviously this is something I don't want to happen. If this is going to be an issue is there any way to prevent it from happening?

I have heard some owners drape material of sorts around the cage. Others have tacked a old sheet to the wall and simply took it down to wash. Mine is almost 4 mos and I don't seem to have a problem YET.

There is a thread on GC by BMXgirl about how to make a "glider kitchen" which appears to eliminate the problem. I've had
Peeps for a couple of months now, and I'm just recently starting to see a few spots of fruit stuck to the wall in a few places, so I'll probably be making one myself soon.

Even with a glider kitchen and cage covers, mine seem to get stuff back there anyway. I found a magic sponge works wonders on BML and fruits and veggies that get stuck!

I hang fleece on the wall and wash it once in a while. No wall mess. Ha! oh and we just moved out of the old apartment and my husband said that the place in our room where we first put lill (before using fleece) there is a kinda outline of her cage on the wall but there is nothing stuck to the wall. he said it's like a shadow. We regularly scrubbed that thing too. yikes.

fleece works well though to keep the food off the wall. plus they'll crawl all over it during out of cage time.

You can put press and seal on the walls and when its messing just pull it down and throw it away

Ha!
Press N Seal, thats a pretty good idea.
I use painters plastic to line the floors and walls.
A roll is super cheap and lasts forever. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

Wow! Press n Seal! I would have never thought of that. My cage is in the TV part of an old entertainment center in their room. The side where their food is gets somewhat messy. Not too bad, but enough to do something about it

I have a very large cage and I bought and hung a plastic shower curtain(I put cup hooks in the wall to line up with the holes in the curtain)on the wall behind the cage. Every couple of weeks, I take it down and throw it in the washer, hang it to dry in the bath tub (I have a mini clothes line for the tub area) Then just hook it back up.

The press and seal is a great idea!! I use an old sheet for my cages, and when it gets really bad I just pitch it. I also found that getting a plastic igloo that is used for ginea pigs helps cut down on the mess. I just put there food dishes inside the igloo, and that way most of the mess stays inside of it. Also, I found since the BML gets so sticky I started using the Orange Oil Goo Gone with a brush. I do this when they are sleeping for a quick clean up in between the real scrubbings. It has no harsh solvents and is organic, but can be harmfull if swallowed. That is why I would only do it while they are not around. It also smells good...

I made Keeva a cage cover that she loves. Not only does it keep the cold out,but the food in! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" /> You can even put toys on top of it and use it as a play area! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I don't have a problem with food being on the walls. Just all over the cage. Our cage was built by my fiance and it has wire for them to climb on and then on the outside is another type of wire because when he first built the cage the original wire didn't work because our youngest boy was able to get out of it. So we had to put a wire with smaller holes on the outside and the only one that was available to us at the time was the stuff we put on the outside (I can't remember what the real name of it is). I just have to scrub the wire to get it off.. normally I just spray it with hot water and let it soak til it softens up and it comes right off.

Have you tried using a large Critter Hut or igloo over the food dishes? I put the BML in a small crock and fruit and veggies in another dish and set on a large paper plate with the Hut over everything. This eleminates about 90% of the food mess from the gliders.

Where do you get these igloos or glider huts. At petsmart or do you have to order these on line. sounds like I could use something like that.

You could use just about anything that is a few in. high & wide enough to cover the food & room for them to eat but cutting out 2 holes one on each side for them to go in & out. I personally use BMX girl's idea of 'glider kitchen' which is mearly a cake holder with the 2 holes. It works great and they like to goo in & out.

I really liked the idea of the cake holder too. I was about ready to go get one when someone mentioned the size of the door. My door is a tad less than 10 in tall so the cake holder wouldn't work with mine. I'll have to find something smaller.

I ( actually Oscar) was having issues with food on the walls too. I didn't have any press-n-seal at the time, but I had contact paper....it seems to be working pretty well. The best part is that you can wipe it down without taking it down.
I don't think I am going to have issues getting it off the wall, but I am going to have to repaint anyway since I gave him blueberrys before I protected it!

P.S. I saw him fling food out of the cage once...It was an amazing side-arm throw! It went right between the bars. I wish I could get him a pitching contract!
