Has anyone spayed their female? How do I make a e-collar so she won't chew at the incision if I do this?

While it is POSSIBLE to spay a female I would suggest against it. It is a very invasive surgery for these little ones and to many things can go wrong. I had a hard time finding a vet that was willing to neuter males and none that I talked to would even consider spaying a female because of the risk to the glider. If you are wanting her to not breed, then I would suggest having the male neutered. It is a simple proceedure and more times then not, the male with in a couple of days doesn't even realize anything is different. Since their testicles are outside the body, it is much less invasive then it would be for a female who's reproductive organs are all internal. There are definate advantages to neutering the male. It makes them (usually) less agressive and their scent glands will dry up making them less stinky (althought I never thought of mine as stinky, musky would be the better word).

Most vets will advise against it. it is very dangerous and fixing a male is much easier, safer and practical..sorry guys, lol .

I ended up taking her in yesturday to get spayed. She did good. She is wearing a ecollar so she doesn't chew. Other than that she is great. It was also the vets first time with a sugar glider. Just wanted to let you know how the experience went.

Since I don't think anyone else on this board has had a female spayed it might be nice to share more of the experience for us. Who was the vet? What was the price compared to neutering a male? What is the expected recovery time? How long does she stay at the vet? Is there need for more painkillers after the surgery, and if so, what kind and dosage? I don't know if your vet knows about this site but if he could share this information too, we'd all be very curious.

They charged the same as they would a male. I had it done at Granite City Pet Hospital and Surgical Center in St. Cloud Minnesota. Dr. Nelson did the surgery. Honey (Sugar Glider) started to eat at the incision site so they had to put a ecollar on her neck and they said not to remove it for 3 days. They also sedated her after surgery to calm her down a bit. They said 3 days of no activity is best. They didn't put her on any pain pills. Do they normally do this? If so what? Because I'd like to get something for her if possible and what dose? They didn't keep her overnight. She stayed until 8 pm last night and I got her home. The incision is pretty small as far as I can see? Anymore questions feel free to ask or email me at []jjjkfischer@yahoo.com.[/] Thanks

Never heard of a female being done.... hmmm interesting...their little bodies are so small, may I ask why you decided to get her spayed instead of the male neutered?? As for pain meds, when my boys were both snipped my vet sent them home on Rimadyl for pain. They got it two times a day for three days and did great! Good luck with your little girl. One more question...where is the incision?

How very interesting. Three days in an e collar is (to me) quite a long time compared to having my males neutered. They spent one night in the travel cage then back to their reg cage the next night. If cost is the same, it opens up possibilities. However, I still think it is more invasive then having the males neutered. Oh, when I had the males neutered, the vet sent me home with an injection pain killer. Thankfully I didn't have to use it. But are their pain "pills" for gliders? Or just oral suspension and injection types?

Hmm, after we did our last necropsy, my dad thought that spaying a female would be extremely invasive--please let us know where the site was, why the vet decided to spay, rather than neuter the male and why the glider was not given Torbital or Rimadyl for the pain. Keeping a glider immobile for 3 days is near impossible, to do that, having some kind of pain killer would be advisable. As for charging the same as a neuter--you got sooo lucky! The surgeries are completely different where a neuter would take 10-15 minutes if that, a spay could take two to three times that. He didn't gouge on the price which is nice!

The Incision is I believe in the pouch. I can't tell for sure but it's in the center of the tummy. The reason I fixed the female is because she can't keep her joey's alive. I don't think her milk comes in and I have lost 2 sets of twins. I plan to get another female, so I need the male to be fertile still so we can have 1 or 2 babies in the future. Then I'll get the male fixed. She is doing great, except she keeps getting the collar off and licking at herself. Ouch!

I would suggest against this to anyone thinking of it now. She is so persistent on getting the ecollar of and she wants to eat the incision. I have been watching her 24/7 to prevent her from killing herself. She is so miserable. Don't they feel pain? I think it takes too long to heal so it's a lot harder than I thought.

Yes they DO feel pain. That is why we all suggested you get some pain meds from your vet. Have you done that yet? If not, please please do.

Call your vet and ask for some Torb. It can be given orally or by injection. Cannot beleive a vet would send home the glider without any pain meds with this kind of surgery. Only time I have known this type of surgery being done on a female was due to her alpha type behavior. The glider did well and she did become more docile. The incision was not made in the pouch area but rather on the side.

I wasn't asking the question sarcastically about pain. How can she be chewing on herself and not act like it hurts? Thats what I'm getting at. I would call the vet for pain meds but no one told me a approx dose. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks

Awww, poor little girly. Im so sorry... Different vets use different pain meds (I prefer Rimadyl for pain for most of my animals), and the dosage would depend on weight. All Gliders are different so it would be hard to give a correct dosage safely. An experienced vet should know the proper dosage of medication to give. If anything, you might try calling another vet and telling them the situation and asking if they could help you out. Im so sorry... keeping you guys in my thoughts and saying a prayer that she heals up ASAP and returns to her normal self.

I did get the presciption for rimadyl. She is I believe almost 100% recovered. She is not wearing the ecollar anymore and she is leaving the incision site alone. YEAH!! Also the incision was to the side of the pouch and not inside the pouch. Also, I forgot to tell the price I paid for the surgery. It came to a total of $123.50. Not too bad from other prices I have read. I just wanted to let you know she is doing GREAT and is back to her old self again.
