the skin on Lola's ears seems to be really dry and flakey. i do not want to put lotion on them or anything. i have seen her scratch them a couple of times like i would assume dry skin itches on us. i looked just to make sure there were no mites or anything and her ears are clean, just kinda scaley. any suggestions?

I have seen this on my gliders a couple of times with weather changes. When it happens, I rub just a drop of Vitamin E oil into the skin and it clears it up within about 24 hours...

I was also told by my vet the Bag Balm works AMAZING on animals with dry skin. Its even safe for newly born kittens - he had me put it on her nipples before they were born because they were very dry, and the minute after i did it she went into labor and the kittens nursed (with the bag balm on the nipples) and were just fine.

YOu can find bag balm in a pharmacy near where the lotions are. its actually a balm that cow farmers use for the cows utters in cold weather. But it is 100% animal safe (even if ingested) because it was MADE foraniamsl.. its sold now as a lotion/lip balm because it was discovered that those cow farmers had the SOFTEST hands in the world..

My vet actually said that vitamin E wasnt too goo if it was ingested. BUt i am not sure why.

I just used one drop of oil from the softgels... I don't think they would be able to ingest it with applying it to their ears dunno It's never harmed my gliders when I've used it...

i was just saying what my vet told me.. it could be something just for cats.. thats why i am not really adimant about NOT using those.. If it works for you, then its most likely harmless.. i was just suggesting the bag balm cause i KNOW its safe

Is your glider under or overweight by chance? dry ears indicates a thyroid problem

off_topic Sheila,
Could you please look at my thread about History of a Self Mutilator? My Mareki is overweight and the vet initially thought about the possibility of hypothyroidism, but didn't get much feedback from other vets in regards to it being a known problem in gliders dunno If you wouldn't mind, I'd really like you to read through the thread and let me know what you think and if you know of any cases of it in gliders...
thanks

You need to use caution with vitamin E oil because it is a fat soluble vitamin, as opposed to a water soluble one. This means it has the potential to build to toxic levels in the body over time, and isn't flushed out by what you (or the animal) drinks. On a place such as the ears in a limited capacity is fine-a thin coating JUST on the bare part of the ears. Riker also has this problem, and I use the pure almond oil from GNC on his-it also works very well. The only thing you'd need to worry with the E is if a cagemate groomed the ears and you put a gunked on amount over a period of time (ie weeks), or if it's put over large areas of the body, where both absorption thru the skin, or ingestion, is a factor-for a few days a month it won't hurt, though.
