I came home from work and my male glider had chewed off of his tail. He only has about a 1 inch stub left. I have read posts about self mutilation, and to take him to the vet so they can give him med/stitch it up. The problem is there is nothing to stitch it up. It is totally gone. Also, his penis is out too. I just went in to check on him again, and he was sitting on his little branch looking lethargic, but then he jumped down and started to eat his dinner like normal. He lives with his female mate, but although he isnt fixed they have never had babies. Nothing has changed, not his cage or anything. A couple weeks ago he got his nail caught in his pouch and hurt his finger, but nothing has happened since then and it has healed up fine. He has never done this before. Can anyone help? Is betadine ok for me to put on it? Thank you for ANY advice you can give me.

I forgot to mention that i put a bigger pouch in there for him and turned out lights/music and shut the door so he can rest quietly if needed.

You need to keep your little guy warm, so he doesnt go into shock. Your glider needs to get to a vet asap. Dont call to see if they do gliders. Just go, no vet will turn you away. If you have a e-collar get that on aswell. All you can do is keep him warm, get to a vet and if possible give him some fluids. Keep us posted

You need to get this little guy to the vet ASAP. Do you have an ER vet or Clinic you can go to?

He must be in pain if he has done this and if his penis does not retract try putting some K-Y jelly on it. It can dry out and become a HUGE problem.

Gliders can hide pain and illness and you never know they are hurting.

Please get him to a vet.
How old is the glider? And have you noticed his tail at all before tonight?

I got him as an adult about 3 yrs ago so I am not sure how old he is (they didnt know how old he was). His tail seemed fine last night and he was asleep when I left for work this morning. I live out in the country and there isnt a vet in the area so I can't take him until tomorrow when the one in town opens.

Isn't there an emergency vet anywhere? Even if it's a good drive, he needs to go now! I cannot stress the importance of this enough, I don't want you to lose your baby!

Ok, got Bourbon on the phone here....read the thread to her. She suggest you contact Charlie H who has worked with gliders with no tail at all.

sounds to her like glider may have gotten tail involved in entanglement as well. Get to vet asap....

Gina is right. I would rather see you drive a couple of hours to the closest vet than try and hold out until morning. The odds are not good if you try and wait and your baby might not be able to wait till the morning to seek medical attention. Were are you located, maybe we can help find you a vet or 24 emergency clinic.

Oh my! Im so sorry to hear that! Poor poor baby!
I have to agree with others... a vet visit ASAP is a really good idea.
Please keep us updated and let us know what the vet says.

I know you didn't want to take him to the vet to stitch up his tail because there wasn't much left. But there must be a reason he did this, why he is self mutilating, the tail today, who knows what tomorrow. He must be having pain, may have an infection, and without proper treatment will end up with an infection at the least.
I have used betadine on open wounds on humans and gliders but that was just until we could get to the vet. Which you need to do with him, as soon as possible. I know an emergency vet is often hard to find at this hour. If you do not find one tonight, get one asap in the morning. Do not apply anything goopy to the tail if it is not bleeding and is dry. He will just lick it off any may start chewing on it again.
KY, vas. jelly, something like that usually works well for a penis that is out. I'd say if it has been out over an hour, moisten it with the KY, and check it often.
If you have an e-collar, put it on now. Carry him with you if it is possible. If not, make sure he has a nice warm pouch and water and food close by.

Please find a vet asap and keep us updated. I pray he will have a good night.

Is there a wheel in the cage? And did you find the rest of his tail? Just have to wonder like Bourbon and Peggy if he did't get it caught in something. Eithor way, I am sure he needs something for pain. I know if I had cut/bit my tail/finger/whatever off, I would needs some STRONG pain meds. Please keep working on finding him a vet and keep a close eye on him. Offer lots of liquids and food, he may have seemed lethargic just because he is not feeling well, may not feel strong enough to go to the water. At the minimum, this little guy needs some TLC tonight, lots of attention. Sorry, but it sounds like your in for a long night.

If you fine some of his tail take it with you to the vet, and test it. It could be anything, even cancer.

I would be freaked if that happened to any of my gliders. It's bad enough that when I got Tipsy.. he had no hair on the tip of his tail (that's how he got his name). However, after him being with me and in a much bigger cage than the previous owner had him in, he has grown hair back on his tail. Hopefully you can find out exactly why your kid did that to his tail and I hope he gets better.. we'll be praying for you.

Hello everyone. I am sorry that I took so long to reply, it was honestly too hard for me to come back on this site for awhile. After I read your posts I went in and tried to wrap up his tail like I saw on another post. I also tried the vaseline (i dont have any ky jelly) to get his penis back in. I made sure he was warm and he was eating. i kept on checking on him and his mate was leaving him alone. Then I checked on him again, and what I saw is too horrible to write, and I am tearing up even now. I was able to say goodbye to Ferdanand shortly before he passed.

I want to thank you all for your help. I am sorry that I wasnt able to post sooner, it was honestly just too hard for me to do so.

I am so sorry for the pain and loss of your little friend. Although his time was brief with you... fond memories of him will be with you for a lifetime. Ferdanand was well loved.

I am not sure...but reading between the lines... my guess is your little one died from self mutilation?

Not a whole lot is known about why a glider mutilates himself other than he is trying to rid himself of severe pain. We do know that for some and especially in unaltered males...it is often from severe bouts of constipation which leads to total impaction, urinary tract infections or parasitic infestations.

If at all possible .... please have the other remaining glider vet checked for wellness just to be sure she is ok.

Sending you a Big Hug.

So sorry for the loss of your little glider. Don't know how I missed this until now.

For everyone: This is a good example of why you should have an e collar in your glider first aid kit. Practice putting it on your healthy glider so you will know what to do in an emergency. Of course, don't leave it on the healthy glider but be sure you know how to put it on. Chances are you will never need to use it but you should be prepared just in case. I don't want to sound cold here and am not placing blame, but if an e collar had been put on Ferdinand as soon as the injury was discovered there is a good chance the glider could have been saved. And don't expect your vet to be able to furnish you with an e collar. Lots of vets are not familiar with them so will not even attempt to put one on a glider. Be prepared in advance.
