So i just got my glider neutered today and i went to pick him up and when i brought him home i took him out to check him and there was a large patch of blood near the area of operation. I immediately took him back to the vets and they sedated him, fixed the problem and after much trouble and a few hours of monitoring finally got an e-collar like setup that has some elastic that goes under his arms on him (he slipped out of the first one). I guess he was biting at the area and pulled one of the stitches out withing the 10 minutes it took to get him home, they didn't explain it fully. However they want me to keep him in a little plastic hamster cage about maybe 1' x 6" (generous dimensions) for three or four days to keep him calm. The problem is, is that theres not that much room for the food bowl and the water thing i have for him is a kind of dispensing tube its pretty small and can fit in the cage but i dont know how i can make it stay up in the cage, any ideas? I have his pouch laid down in there and two pieces of fleece on the bottom (right now hes sedated on my lap) is there anythings else i can put in there for him? Im suppose to give him torb orally twice a day with the injection tube without the needle but is there any ways of doing this, because im not quite sure how im gonna go about this and how long after the first one do i give him the next dose (im suppose to give him one in the morning). Also how should i monitor him and how long because i have football in the mornings and i have to go to bed around like 11 in order to wake up at 7 i guess i should just miss tomorrow? Sorry for the long post and all the questions.

Since he has already attacked the incision you are gonna have to watch him closely til the area heals (about a week if I remember correctly). I would advise you to miss football at least tomorrow so you can keep an eye on him ( I would peek at him at least every hour if he is in an e-collar. As far as the meds go, twice a day generally means twelve hours apart, so say 8am and 8pm, but that doesn't seem like adequate pain control to me....anyone else have suggestions?

I would agree with observation. I would think it best to keep a very close on him through the night. You should be clear in a few days if he stays away from the site (fingers crossed) Is there anyway you can at least tie the water bottle up or offer it by hand through the night when you check on him? I would not think there should be anything else in the cage you wan to limit him movement.
I would think if he does not start to eat you may want to offer fluids by hand to keep him hydrated.
Hopefully someone with some more experience with Neuter sm will be along.

I've had 3 males who've given me TONS of heartache by chewing on their stitches very much like what you're describing. The good news is that they've all pulled through OK in the long run. The bad news is that I had to bring them to work with me for a couple days to make sure they didn't do more damage. I understand the vet's point of view about minimizing the size of what your suggie has to run around in...but I'm concerned that it may only increase his stress level by being confined to such a small space. I used a cage that's about 2' x 2' x 2' & made a hammock out of 2 embroidery hoops with a piece of fleece stretched between them...then hung the hammock from the top of the cage. I added a couple of 3" x 3" squares of fleece for them to crawl under. That at least allowed the boys a place to sleep somewhat comfortably. They could move around with the restraint. If he has an e-collar type restraint, then eating out of a food bowl will be next to impossible for your guy. You'll have to get a tube feeder & limit him to strictly liquid. If you have him on the BML diet, use 50% BML and 50% water. Mealworms will have to be hand-fed. He will need to be checked at least every hour through the night...just for a couple minutes, but you need to make sure he hasn't wiggled out of his restraint AND that he's not getting dehydrated. I'm afraid that you'll have to miss football for tomorrow AND Friday if nobody else can monitor him for you. As far as the torb, I'm very surprised that the vet didn't give you more specific instructions like "every 12 hours". I am not familiar with torb, so I'll defer that answer to someone else...maybe Dancing will come along soon, or XFileFan to help you with that regard. I will be thinking of you through the night...I've been there, and it's a nerve-wracking affair.

Thats his setup its wrapped around his right arm not too tight and not two big of a piece of elastic. Anyone know when its ok to remove the e-collar ill probably just contact my vet and ask and i know it will be a few days but i was just wondering. And on a side not its just my luck i ran out of bml last week and hadn't made anymore i guess im gonna have to run to the grocery store and get some. Also for hydration should i mix a little gatorade in their to help hydrate him more efficiently? Any tips on how i should give him torb?

You can use pedialyte to help with the dehydration.

You may also want to thin down the bml so you can hand feed him. If he seems like he is pain ou may want to call the vet back. I would think they would give the pain med closer then 12 hours. I am not sure if there is and easy way to get them to take it.

I just had a problem along the same lines a couple of weeks ago. Luckly I was at the MWSGGA and had plenty of help.
When giving his meds hold him where you can hold onto his head because he will probably shake his head to "spit" the meds out because of the taste. I held Logan in my hand with his back towards my palm then placed a finger on each side of his head so he could not shake it. I then put my thumb and other two fingers around his body. I put the syringe up to his mouth near the back and he would open up and I just squeezed the meds out of the syringe into his mouth. Luckly, he didn't fight at all, it seemed as if he kinda liked the meds. You could give him a mealie afterwards to make up for the meds. Hope that makes sense and helps some.

Actually I didn't give pain meds. They gave him something at the vet, they said it would last for 24 hours, sorry can't remember what it was. But I had to give Baytril for 4 days once a day.

he has been knocked out for the past 2 or so hours and i hes just waking up I'm hoping it's a typo-but if he was still out from anesthesia 2 hours after coming home-he needs to be seen by the vet again, and ASAP. There is a drug they can give to help. That can be anesthesia overdose, and it can be fatal without any other complications (I worked with someone whose glider died from it). Limit food and water, and call the vet ASAP if that is the case. If complications, also, I would watch him in the morning and not leave him. If anyone can contact this person, please tell him/her to check the glider and watch closely for signs of overdose : Lethargy, shaking, poss. vomiting, refusal to eat, drooping ears, etc.

Sorry i havent check this forum didnt mean to keep you on edge. My grandma's dog got stung by a scorpion and had an allergic reaction so my mom has been back an forth to the emergency vets. They gave him something to knock him and keep him calm that was more long term because they didnt want him bleeding. Hes pretty active and i check on him throughout the night and hes still fighting to try and get it off if feed him a few grapes and some 1/2 gatorade 1/2 water mix through a syringe and hes taken it willingly. I aprreciate all the help and if something was urgent i would definitely give you a call.

*sighs of relief* I'm glad to hear your little man has a willingness to eat and drink. That's a POSITIVE sign for sure! I will admit, your vet was very creative in restricting him from getting to his incision. (Kinda reminds me of what we came up with for Willy Wonka ) Yes, your little guy WILL fight that tooth & nail until he wears himself out...it's a "foreign object" and he doesn't like it, simple enough! You will need to watch his incision for the next week---if you see ANY SIGN of something seeping out of the wound and/or it smells "funny", BEELINE for the vet's office!!! On the good side, after about 3-4 days, the wound should start to "scab over" just like us humans do. You'll need to keep some kind of restraint on your little man for a WEEK at least! With the passing of each day, the need to check him frequently will decrease...and he'll be come more used to having the restraints, too. It would REALLY benefit him to feed him a watered-down version of BML, for the vitamins & all. He needs every gram of help you can give him. Hang in there, it's going to get better day by day!

Also, if he shows any lessened activity, 'spacey face'(poss. seizure activity), shaking or uncoordination or no appetite-have the vet check. I am VERY concerned about how long he was out for, and hope it didn't damage anything neurological.

Yeah im gonna go to the store and pick up some of the stuff i dont have for the bml and try feeding it to him. His cheeks look a little puffy and the vets said that could be due to the anesthesia and his nose his purple or anything so i dont think its the restraint. I just feed him a good amount of apple and grapes and he literately snatched them out of my hand. Still havent heard him crab once at me even though they said he was mean to them .

Keep a really close eye on him the next several days, and make sure he stays well hydrated, even if you need to force a little extra fluids-it will hopefully help flush any residual chemical out of his tissues. And keep us updated.
