It all started about 4 months agao when I started to do all my research on sugar gliders. We were looking at buying male and female from a pet store. I know you are not to do that but the condition these little sugar gliders were in was bad. Well I started asking questions about thier diet and how they have been taking care of. The owner of the pet shop says they eat cat food and cottage chesse. I said anything else oh no he says they just love that stuff only. Things just did not sound right to me ( this was before I did deeper research ) He says they are a proven breeding pair and I want $400.00 This guy was nuts. He did not have the first clue about these. He did admit that they dont get them out to play enough. Well I told him I was going to do more research. Well I did and also bought our glider now from a breeder. I went back few weeks later to see if he still had them to talk him down on price to try to save the two from him. When I got there the girl got the female out who was now carry a baby and just looked so life less. I thought oh no she is going to die. She said that her legs had been dragging so I thought maybe HLP. This girl starts asking me what should they be eating? What can I feed her to help her. We have only been giving her cat food. Why are they called sugar gliders? I really just about fell over. I came home copied everything I had info wise and took it all up there to them and the owner acted like an __ __ __! Like she was fine and what ever. I even told them I am no expert but that glider needs help. He blew me off. I went back last week and the mother a long with baby died. I am so saddened by this. Was there something else I could have done? Is there a place to call and report pet shops like this one? Just thought I would share that with all of you. Pet stores are bad.

That's really sad. I don't know enough about these things but you could contact the Humane Society, a local animal shelter or even television like the Animal Planet network and see what they suggest.
At least, you might be able to prevent it from happening again.

Check with the USDA the pet shop needs to be liscensed to sell gliders and to be liscensed they should be knowlegable about gliders. If they don't have a liscense then this should prevent them from selling anymore gliders if they are this might get their liscense revocked (?sp) Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I hope this helps.

Gosh, that's horrible. If they only had listened to you, the gliders might have lived! The owners probably didn't want to shovel out money for a vet. Man, would they have actually SOLD tehm if someone wanted to buy them? That's awful. I really hope they don't get more in that store. Give them all the info you have. Tell them they MUST care for them properly or else they will keep getting sick and dying! That poor joey probably didn't get any calcium and the cat food wasn't the best either. How sad, they are obviously called SUGAR gliders for a reason - they never got anything sweet like fruit? And they needed exercise - hence the term "glider". I really hope they don't get more gliders there....you should tell them that saying about an ounce of prevention is worth ...(however it goes!) Grrrr that makes me so mad....

Mario--This is a sad but typical story of some pet stores. They do not have the slightest clue about the welfare of gliders. You did the right thing by trying to help and educate the people selling the gliders.
There is not much more you could have done short of buying the gliders. The problem with buying the gliders is that the pet store will just replenish their "stock". Some pet stores look at gliders as profit for the store. Buying them only keeps the problem going on and on.
Your options were very limited here, so do not feel bad. And guess what? What you did is exactly the right thing! You can also report them to the USDA is they are unlicensed. Here is a link to see if this store is licensed by the USDA:
http://www.aphis.usda.gov/ac/publications.html
Scroll about halfway down on the left hand column and look for facility lists. If they are not on the list, report them. To sell or even give a glider away, you must have a USDA license. I suspect these people did not. The breeder they bought them from must be licensed as well. So maybe by reporting them, you can shut down the breeder and the store. You may be able to close the source of the gliders as well. It may have been too late for the gliders because sometimes it takes awhile to get a USDA agent out to the location in question. That is why what you did was exactly the right thing--trying to keep them alive!
There are other animal welfare agencies that might have helped in this case as well. If the gliders are in dirty conditions or being improperly taken care of, any animal welfare agency can help. You could try the SPCA chapter in your area or PETA or agencies similar to these.
It is truly a sad situation. So check that list and make that call. You still can do something to help other gliders and those gliders might not have died in vain. Now the agencies will have proof that they died and were improperly taken care of while at that pet store. Maybe their deaths will save other gliders. They need a voice and Mario, you can speak for them. Let us all know how it turns out.
I would also like to point out that not all pet stores are bad. I got my gliders from a pet store. The conditions there are clean. They were receiving a good diet. They had places to sleep and toys to play with. The staff was very knowledgeable. My gliders were healthy when I went in for the initial vet check and they are extremely friendly. The pet store I bought them from had a USDA license because I checked that out before getting my two. It is other pet stores that are not like this one that need to be shut down. This sounds like one of them that needs to be shut down.

Thank you and yes I am going to try to do something about this. That pet store still has the full grown male. He has not died yet and I spoke to one of the girl employes there and told her well with the info I gave you all now maybe you wont let this one die. The girl was actually sad and crying over the gliders death and baby but it was all the owner who did not care at all. I was also told that the pet store has a vet for thier sick animals and he still did nothing to save her and her babys life. The dad glider that is still there the girl said she went and bought him some fruits and veggies and gave him some crickets. I may have saved one for now but I hope to contact these people and save him for good. I understand that pet stores are out to make money but gee when someone goes out of thier way (like I did) to give them diet info and everything to help save that mother and baby and for the pet shop owner to turn his head and tell me that if I wanted to help then I should talk with the girl employe taken care of her because he thought she was fine and going to get $400.00 for her and her baby. Oh I am sorry I am rambling on but it did really hurt that he could be so rude and not show any care in the world for her. Well thank you for the info I am going to try to find out what can be done.

Mario,

I have been having a similar experience with a pet shop near me. No death so far, thank god but they simply refuse to listen to advice. I want to purchase the Sugar Glider to save him but I know they will only get more. Two of the local rescues I have were originally bought from this store. I actually was supposed to rescue another but he died the morning I was supposed to pick him up. Most pet stores have no business selling any pets much less a nocturnal one. I hope you are able to get somewhere with that pet store. All of the phone calls I have made have only produced comments like, “Proper diet is an extremely subjective mater, as long as they are not abusing the Glider there is nothing we can do”. It is very frustrating.

This is sad!! I always said, If I had the bucks to open a NICE PET STORE!! Everyone that worked there would be put through classes and tests --before we even carried that certain animal or
reptile, bird... I would provide all the diets needed and sell the diet supplies. If you came into my store...you would be expected to know the facts---and produce the cash to buy everything that the pet needs. If you can't afford the supplies and need items...go away!! My dear friend owns a small pet store---she not only sells the pets she educates the owners. She hands out fact/care sheets and speaks the truth telling
what the animal need to live. She will not sell
sugargliders---because she is concerned with the
animals welfare after the sale. To bad there is not more pet store owners like my friend!!!
She won't even sell you a Iggy unless you buy
a huge cage, UV lighting etc.... Then she tells them if you can't care for it & thing change?
I'll buy the animal back. ** There is another
stupid store...that sell snakes and don't even know the what kind they are selling?? GOD HELP US ALL !! THESE ARE HIS CREATURES!!

Hi, I am sorry for your experience and I would feel bad if I was in the situation. However, I just wanted to say that not all pet stores are like this. I work at a pet store and we have sugar gliders. My boss knows everything about all the animals we have there - she wont buy any animals to sell if she doesn't do research. But I know where you're coming from. It's too bad that most pet stores don't care for their pets well enough.

Mario,
That was a very sad story. I do not have a glider yet. I am learning all I can before I get one. This story broke my heart, even brought tears to my eyes. It is a shame that they are just in it for the money. I would think that a pet shop would do their research first. They are to precious to have been treated that way, They deserve better. I commend you on trying to do something about this sad situation. Perhaps you will save others gliders that the pet store might get their hands on. Boy, I hope they listen to you and take better care of the male glider.
