I was at a pet store picking up a few things. Started to talk to a lady about gliders. Before I knew it I was being told how wrong I was for keeping a wild thing in a cage. How they sould be free. That cages should be outlawed. But I think she is wrong. I don't keep my gliders in a cage to trap them. I keep them there to keep them safe.

My opinion is a cage is not a place to keep animals trapped. But to keep them safe. I made my cages a safe and fun place. It is their home inside my home. But like a home it needs to be big enough to house you and your family as well as safe.

What do you guys think about cageing animals like our gliders?

Bitsy

I think someone with an opinion whould start the conversation by saying "this is my opinion". It really irks me when people think they are right and you are wrong, no matter what it is. Some people think "my way or the highway". Its wrong. I agree with you about the safety issues. I have read so many sad stories here about gliders that got out and were killed by other animals. My gliders cage is very large, full of toys and the room is kept warmer than the rest of the house. They are allowed out twice a day for play and have the run of a bedroom. They are happy and healthy.

Cages are not meant to be a prison. My gliders are all in cages and are let out only when I can supervise them and keep them from harmful things. Same for my ferrets. I know lots of people have ferrets that are not in cages and well, ferrets are naturally curious sort of like a 2 year old. The places they can get into amazes me. Gliders also have this type of curiousity and are even smaller so the places they can get to harm themselves is even greater.
Putting an animal, anytype of animal, in a cage and just leaving them there is wrong. With the exception of fish (for obvious reasons), I think all animals need to be able to come out of their cages and explore BUT with supervision to keep them safe.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

People who have never had a crate-trained dog often think it's mean to put a dog in a crate too. If you've been around one that was properly introduced and acclimated to crates, you can see that they see it as their own personal den and willingly go in, sometimes even when they aren't told to. I think it's the same with suggies. As long as they are provided adequate playtime and things to entertain themselves with while inside the cage, I don't think there is anything wrong with it. Peepers will still sometimes go in her cage during playtime when she has the run of the whole bedroom. So that tells me she doesn't see it as a prison.

I think of the time I met my friend's glider this past August as the first time I was introduced to them, but if I really think about it, I can kind of remember hearing about them from someone much longer ago in the context of them being a type of animal that shouldn't be kept as pets. I know there are people out there who think that, and they are entitled to their opinion, but I don't agree. Just reading about all the happy suggies on this board shows that if you care for them properly, they can have a long happy life as a pet.

[:"blue"] Put your dog or cat out in the back yard for a few hours and most of them will happily come home to a nice warm meal after a couple of hours. Put you glider outside for a couple of hours and see what happens??

Prison.......take a look at the definition in a dictionary. [/]

Before I get several male gliders, I used to give my gliders free roam of their glider room at night. Half the time they wouldn't even leave their cage and every morning they were back in their cage sleeping. Their cage is their home and it's where they want to be. Maybe this woman needs to be kicked out of her house and see how it feels...

The time I've spent at my breeder's home, I've noticed his gliders preffer their cage sometimes. He lets his gliders run free in his bedroom in the evenings, but whenever would we go in to see what they were up to, they would have already gone back inside of their cage to chill. It seems like they like having a little place to call their own. Just one newbie's opinion...

Gliders see the cage as their home. If they didn't have a cage, we probably would never find them after 24 hours of being "free". That lady is probably obne of those EXTREME animal activists.

I hate putting my gliders in the cage and when the two males are properly introduced they will never be locked in it again. (we have a huge glider proof room) i think she is saying that the whole industry of breeding and selling these animals to be locked in cages is wrong when they should be in the wild instead.

this is not to say that the gliders are not completely spoiled but many aren't. many gliders live horrible lives. they come from mills, are often sick and neglected...

but i feel like i have no place locking up an animal in any situation. i would hate to be locked in my home and only be allowed out when someone else decides its safe for me. yikes.

what i am wondering is why is this person working at a pet store if they are against this?? makes no sense to me.

also gatorsensation... should we really persecute people for loving animals too much? "EXTREME" <----

we know nothing of this girl except that she apparently cares about animals and expressed concern... in the form of an opinion. She may not know a lot obout gliders or about how Bitsy treats gliders.

People are amazed when they discover how glider owners can spoil thier suggies.

One of my friends told me that I should not keep suggie as a pet because it is an exotic animal because she has never heard of them. I told her that Yaya plays around the house, with my dog, with me and a lot of different things, she will go from the living room to my room to look for her cage and she waits until I let her in, by the way just because someone has not heard of a certain animal as a pet, that does not mean I cannot keep them, they are happy and love their home and their other friends in the house. Just my opinion.

Obviously cages are all right for sugar gliders. I think the lady was just giving you a hard time, and I'm sorry. I would get really angry if someone came up to me and said stuff like that.

Mine like their cage.

And if you do the math, most gliders have more space in their cages than we humans do in the places we live . . . .

For example, me to my ~500 square feet apartment is roughly a 1:300 ratio of cubic space. For my two gliders in their 5x3x2' cage, the ratio is about 1:3,200 (the equivalent of about a 5,000 square foot house).

True. Although in my case my girls seem to be capable of escaping from their cage whenever they want . . . . They almost never do it, though.

I've heard many gliders can do that (escape). These buggers are intelligent!! Mine haven't done it yet... thank goodness, cuz the male in the cage next to them would fight them.

There are wayyyyyyy too many dangers in a home for a glider to be running amok w/ out supervision. As many times as I tell my son to put the toilet lid down, do you think he listens, nooooooooooo! If it weren't for the cage those gliders wouldn't last long if they had free reign. Electrical chords, heating vents, who knows?

I think the girl's point was not that they should be kept in houses but not in cages but that they are WILD animals and should not be kept at all.

We let ours "run amok" in the glider room all night long until we rescued a new boy who doesn't get along with the other pair. There is nothing electrical they can chew on, nothing to fall into.. the only thing in the room would be glider toys and fake ficus trees.

we would not keep gliders if they didn't need homes. These gliders would not need homes if others didn't keep them as pets. There are many gliders who die or live terrible lives because they are being sold everyday by people who only want to make a buck. These babies should be back where they came from in the wild. not caged up. sad but true.

My little ones have a 2'x2'x5'2" cage. I alwaays let them out for playtime. Since they have been getting use to each other, I just let them loose in the spare bedroom all night long. When I come in in the morning, they are all tucked away in their cage. I didn't even need to put them there, they went there themselves. They are smart...and love their cage. Even during playtime they like to camp out in the cage at times.I see nothing wrong w/ it. Maybe the girl didn't understand the fact that they have toys in the cage and are actually happy there..otherwise why would they keep going back in??
