I am so sad and feel soooooo guilty. My littlest suggie Gabby drowned in the toilet last night. It never occured to me that she would go under a closed door. None of my other gliders have done that. It really hurts to have such a preventable accident. I have heard so many stories about it happening to others....Never thought it would happen here. I can't tell you how sad our family is.

If you want to know what a person is like, watch how he treats others.

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.

I'm very sorry for your loss. I want to share how I keep my suggies safe. This wont be any consolation now, but will help in the future. Our gliders are in a bedroom. We used to shove a towel under the door, but the male just pulled it aside and ran off. We have 2 cats, so this was pretty scary. A couple times he got lost and everyone was running around trying to find him. We would always find him on the stairs and he gave us this "whats the big deal" look. My husband cut a piece of wood that fits exactly under the door. We all have to remember not to trip on it as we come in the room. But no glider has ever escaped this. We also use a bungie cord as a lock for the cage. It doesn't look very nice, but it keeps them in. We lost a rejected joey a couple months ago. The sadness is overwhelming. I never knew that tiny creature could break my heart. She has a special place in out back yard.

wwwdichroicnet: I am so sorry to hear about Gabby! These stories make me so sad. Know that you are in all our thoughts!!!

lillie: My doors have about three-quarters to an inch of clearance underneath, and the first chance Spice had, she ran under the door. She was startled by the hall so she just kind of froze for a while and I was able to scoop her up (lucky lucky lucky!). Now I use a few thick books or boardgame boxes to black the doors whenever they come out of the cage. I would think that any space they can fit their head in is enough room to squeeze through.

I am so very sorry for both of you <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worried2.gif" alt="" />. I lost my first baby this way four years ago after only two weeks <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crying.gif" alt="" />. I kept thinking about him for a long time after and felt so horribly guilty <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />. When I got Staples two months later, I rigged a bungy (spelling?) chord on my toilet lid in a way that the lid automatically closes when you are finished using the bathroom. I have two daughters and they hated it at first, but I promised that I would never lose another baby that way.
My heart goes out to both of you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

Bless your heart. So sorry for your loss.

This is one of my greatest fears...I'm nutso about making sure the toilet lid is down. They are such curious little creatures and love to explore.

So sorry for your loss and pain. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />

I offer my deepest condolences; I also wanted to thank everyone for sharing their ideas on how to keep sugar gliders safe from this kind of situation in the future.
