When a glider is hurt or injured it is often their instinct to "get rid of" what is hurting them. Often times they will do this by attempting to chew it away.

Hmm - would giving them the pain meds the vet sends you home with help with this problem.... I am thinking, if they don't feel the pain then maybe they will not chew?

Even with pain meds, many gliders still SM...

SM is a broad term now, for self mutilator, it started with the cloacae, where seemingly there was no cause or cure, they just out of the blue would chew their cloacae area till death, the more that we worked with them, the more we learned, we are seeing it more and more these days with injuries and after neuters, due to as stated above they are going after their injured areas. the e-collar is the key factor though, the words sm, and e-collar should walk hand in hand no matter what the cause, e-collars should be in place for any part that is accessible with their mouth, before going to the vet if possible. One of the things we are now wanting to stress, is to please have one handy at all times, know how to put it on in case you ever do need it, the biggest problem we are seeing is that people don't have one and have no clue how to put them on during an emergency. hopefully you will never need it, but it is always better to be prepared. Also if you know you are taking your glider in for a neuter, please be prepared with a pre-made e-collar, as many vets don't have one for gliders handy. there is a sticky above, that explains the cloacae mutilators, with the directions for the e-collars as well. there is an emergency contact page and e-collar instructions at the SM site, as well as stories from other owners as well. http://www.sm.all4gliders.com

Thanks for the INFO..... is this e-collar listed in the link below something "I NEED to MAKE" in case I need it when they are neutered? - or is there a premade one some where. http://glidercentral.net/images/494411-ecollarproject.jpg

Which METHOD do most of you prefer......?
a) Removing the testicles and the scrotum.
b) Removing just the testicles, leaving the scrotum.

Asking to make sure... Would it be best for ME to have my two boys neutered at the same time?

Asking to make sure... Would it be best for ME to have my two boys neutered at the same time? Alot of how the proceedure is done depends on the vet. Most of the time the owner will request what they'd like to have done. I opt for leaving the scrotum. I had both of my boys done at the same time. For me it was easier to watch over them both at the same time. Don't hesitate to ask! That's what we are here for. Best of luck to you and your boys!

I also wrote an article about Self Mutilation (SM) that you can read through - much of the information came from Bourbon to begin with... Self Mutilation

I've had both. Complete removal was done by the breeder's vet for one of my gliders. The other I had done by my vet, and they left it in tact. Both are fine, healed well, no SM.

I've only had one male neutered thus far. Gizmo's scrotum was completely removed and he DID SM But with an e-collar on him for 3 days, we were able to get past the crunch and he healed beautifully once he couldn't get to it anymore
