Platinum Genetic Question #31278

Platinum has always been my all time favorite variation (other than a wf wt glider hehe), but I don't know anything about its genetics. Exactly how is a platinum produced and is it carrying the leucistic gene 100%? I never quite understood the genetics of the leucistic gene, so if anyone could help me understand this, I would really appreciate it!

I believe if you scroll down a page or so or do a search, I had asked the same exact question and got some answers from some of the breeders here. So maybe that will help you or they'll come along again. Good luck Jess I agree with you they're my favorite too, so beautiful

Judie and I have recently discussed this question and based upon Shelia Willsons recent platnium glider the theory of how they are produced is as follows:

F1 Generation: Leucistic X Blonde
F2 Generation: Leucistic / blonde double het x Leucistic
F3 Generation: Platinum

Judie please correct me if I am wrong

I think your F2 generation might be wrong?
If I remember right it was a Whitefaced male and a leucistic het that produced the F3 Platinum.

Has Sheila decided on whether Bailey carries the leucistic gene? I think that she suspected he might. I would be happy if he did since I have one of his little ladies who is the coolest female glider ever, and that would give her a greater possibility of carrying the leu gene!

When are you gonna let me see that leu lineage you drew up Chris?

LOL RANDY, you know us women, we change our minds faster than you can blink I have been moody Actually, really, I am just trying to hide from you

Okay, so I get it so far I think... After you get a Platinum glider, what would you pair the Platinum glider with to continue producing platinums or possibly BEWs? Is a Platinum glider a 100% carrier of the white gene? Sorry if I sound stupid, but my brain cells aren't grasping the concept too well

Sheila's Platinum is a Possible het for leucistic since it was produced by breeding a leucistic het x wf blonde.

Does this mean that if you pair Haley up with a blonde that she will produce Platinums?

What if you pair her up with a Leucistic or a Leucistic het?

Can she produce Leucistics or Platinums, or has this never been done before?

I really think this is a learn as we go situation As Haley herself was a sweet surprise.

interesting information...so Miss Haley being a Platinum herself would be paired with what kind of glider to possibly produce more like her kind?

We don't know yet. Most of the other platinums that have been produced have been sterile, but I believe most of them were males. I personally would pair her with a leucistic het, which is what I think Sheila is doing.

**Sterility seems to be a common problem with split mutation males (mosaics, platinums). I have heard of no problems in regards to females though and Haley should be fully capable of producing joeys.

I think it would be interesting to pair Hailey up with a Het for Leucistic.

On the other hand...Sheila more than likly is pairing her up with a BEW with the chance she will produce white as Hailey is a Possible Het. If offspring is not white...then it will be a 100% Leucistic Het.

If I remember right I think Sheila said she's pairing her up with a het for leucistic, let me see if I can find the link.

Yep, she said she's pairing her up with a 100% het leucistic. Exciting huh! I'm curious to see what color here offspring are. Here's the link , its about halfway down the page.

Hmm okay, so I think I am getting this down now haha. To produce more platinums, Shiela would pair Hailey up with a leucistic or a het for leucistic. But since the WFB color has something to do with producing the platinum in the first place, could Shiela pair a WFB-non leucistic het with Hailey and get more platinums?

Jessie I think that it is still pretty tough to predictably produce the platinums. So either way she pairs them, it is somewhat left up to chance. Haley is technically supposed to be a "possible" leucistic het so pairing her with a wf might not yield exactly the same as the pairing that produced her. I would think that the chances of producing platinum again would be better with a leucistic or leucistic het since Haley probably already has the genes to encourage platinum that would be needed from the wf's anyways. It would be cool to find out what would happen if she was paired with a wf though.

Thank you Ernie for the reply! Like I have said before... Genetics are not my strong point lol, but I still find them extremely interesting and try to learn as much as possible.

I am excited to see what little Haley will produce when she becomes breeding age, we all know Sheila will give us updates!
