I was wondering if you can use just plain PVC in making a custom glider cage. I have read some things about wrapping something around the pvc, but didn't know if you need it.
thanks

Yes, PVC coated wire works. There are a few sites that sell it kuberlantz (sp), a store around you may have it.

I don't quite understand what you're asking, but I'll give it my best shot- Are you talking about using PVC pipe as a frame? If so, yes you're able to do that and you can use either PVC coated wire or vinyl coated hardware cloth.

ok, i was asking about using it for a frame. You answered my next question though with the mesh stuff.
thanks for the quick answer

Another question too:
How hard is this wire to cut? does it leave sharp edges?

The pvc coated wire is a little harder to cut than the vinyl hardware cloth. I cut mine when I built my cages and I've had carpal tunnel surgery on both hands. Not the most fun I've had, but I got it done! Usually the cut edges are on the outside of the cage. If you make shelves or use it inside the cage, you can put the plastic stripping on the cut edge. You can get stripping at Lowes or Home Depot, but it isn't as sturdy as what you get from Klubertantz. It serves the purpose though. I actually used the pvc pipe to reinforce my large cages by putting it all around the center of the cage like a bracing. Works great for a frame too.

when I built my cage, I got a metal file (like one for filing metal) and filed the edges where I had cut. yes it was time consuming, but it beat the risk of sharp edges...and around the doors and door jams I used the plastic spine things for report covers, so there aren't any exposed cut edges inside the cage. good luck on your construction project!

Something i just thought up, and i'm not sure if anyone has ever used it before. They make this stuff called plastidip, and it is like a hard rubber material that comes in a aerosaul can. I thnk you might be able to use that for cut ends.
Also, has anyone tried using the pre-made cage doors by klubertanz makes? I didn't know if they would work well and how easy they would be to install.
mimijo- are you saying to also run pvc through the center of the cage for like perches? I think that would be an excellent idea.

No, what I meant was I formed a "square" made of pvc pipe, placed it in the inside center of the cage and used zip ties to hold it to the cage. This reinforced the center of the cage and gave it more stability. See the pic above. I tried to use pvc pipe for perches once, but it's so slick, the guys couldn't get a good grip on it. I suppose you could rough it up some, but then that would be creating little tiny crevices for bacteria to lodge in. I use the manzanita branches for perches, and even limit those.

Another thing I have done is use all acrylic or plastic toys so that when I power wash my cage, there is a minimal amount of things to remove and replace. I do change toys around once in a while though. The attached pic is an old one, but you can see the gray pvc pipe.

I wish I had a digital camera to take a pic of the cage my b/f and I built 2 years ago. We bought the wire and door hooks from that website that was posted above. We only spent $75 with shipping and it took 1-1/2 days to make. It was hard to cut. But it has levels and towards the top it has little corner shelves...kind of like a ferret cage. It's awesome. And we used a ton of zip ties. It's 2'x2'x5'. Whenerver we need to wash it, it's too big to put in the shower, and we live in a 3rd story apartment, so we borrow a truck from friends/family and take it to the car wash to clean it. That website is the best and it only takes about 1 week to be shipped in. I promise that once you make it and spend the money, you'll get a lot of use out of it. I will probably have mine for a really lone time. And, I think that the spacing is 1/2" x 1"...I wouldn't get any bigger than that becasue they will get out. Did you happen to find a little female yet? I sent oyu an email w/ some people in colorado springs that have gliders that need homes.
