What's the minimum size to use for a tent. #32348

I am wanting to get a tent as you guys suggest. Having room for one is a limiting factor however, I want one big enough that they can get the exercise that they need. I'm 5'4'' and my hubby is 6'1'' . The two of us in there together would take up quite a bit of room.Apparently the cage I bought was not as big as it should have been for 2 gliders. 18x18x36,

I don't have a "glider " room . It will be in my family room which isn't very large. Do people use them and then put them up when they are done with them? For those that do which is the best tent to use , and what size, that will be easy to put up as well as to break down and store.

What to you guys suggest?

Thanks! Cindy

A lot of people use jr. dome tents, which can be picked up and stores like WalMart. I personally don't use a tent, just a nice cozy little glider proofed room.

A little room would be ideal but there are no spare rooms here. I'd thought about using the bathroom from time to time. I can't get the linen door to close all of the way and I'm afraid if they get in there I'll never see them again. My linen cabinet is not too terribly well orgainzed. ANything could get lost in there! Plus there is usually a cat sleeping in it.

Is the Jr. Dome tent really large enough for the gliders to exercise while we are also sitting in it?

Yes, it's plenty big The only problem I would see is your hubby... He might be a little tall for it...

I assume we would both be sitting down in it. He's a pretty good sized man and I'm not exactly tiny, so we need room not only for us but also for the gliders. It would be more fun to do it together than just one of us at a time.

The jr. tent I have has a floor size of 5 foot x 6 foot and is about 4 foot tall(dome) when assembled. It has two poles that are in sections with an elastic cord running through the middle of it. The poles just go together then run through some loops on the outside of the tent, down to the corners. It takes all of about a minute to put up. I leave all the toys and such in the tent when I am done, colapse it down, loosely role it up and slide it under my bed for storage. Takes about a minute to take it down.

Did you get yours at Wal-mart or where?
sounds like that one might give us a little more room.

We have the 5'x6' Jr Dome tent from Wal-Mart, also. I'm 5'7", my husband is 6'4". There won't be a ton of room left over if you're both in there, but the suggies will also use you as their landing/play surfaces. Along with leaping, jumping, climbing the seams, etc. The height at the center of the dome is 3 feet, so your hubby may have to prop up on an elbow instead of sitting upright-mine does but it works-and the gliders have a blast. I usually take my 'tent pillow' in (along with treats), lean back and watch them have fun.

Oh, and for storage, we tie the edges together with cord so the tent folds in a flat U, and slide it under the bed or in the closet.

I went to walmart today but they didn't have any of the small tents. I think an 8'long one was the smallest for 3 people and that's too large for me . The one you got would be the perfect size or the one that was discussed earlier on another thread with the stars on it. I'll try our other walmart tomorrow or may just go on line and order one.

Thanks for the ideas!

We also have a dome tent that is 5'x6' and 4' tall. I am 5'9" and hubby is 6'4", but hubby doesn't get in it much. I leave mine up all the time and have fleece throw blankets on the floor with toys in there as well. When needed, I take the toys out and put them on top of my bookcase and use clamps to put the tent flat for storage under the bed. Here's a pic of Abby playing in the tent, you can see some of their toys...

How cute! Thanks for the pic. Looks like yours is having a good time. I ran across one on the internet from Target. It is a tee-pee style 8' tall. I wondered about getting it.
I started another thread awhile ago on it. I guess I should have just added it here, but anyway the other thread lists the link for it.

Cindy:

[:"blue"] You want to remember that part of the reason for tent time is bonding. Having a nice cozy tent "requires" the gliders to be in close proximity to their keepers and does a lot to enhance the human/glider bond. You should be thinking about the smallest tent that you can comfortably fit into and not the biggest tent that you can fit into your room!!! At least, that's the way I see it. [/]

The dome tent y'all were talking about - does that have hanging hook things? Or where can I get one that does, they talk about it in the sugargliderinfo.com article on bonding and that sounds quite ideal..

The Jr dome tent has 4 loops in the ceiling, and mesh you can hang things from. We have vines, a rope, and hanging toys in ours, plus whatever goes in on the floor that day.

Hi RAndy, so you are saying that although the floor dimensions of the tee-pee are ok, that the height may be too tall? And the reason for a smaller tent is so they will feel more free to climb around on you and therefore bond?

I just thought that the higher height would give them more room to exercise and room to actually jump and glide from.

Maybe I should stick with a smaller tent. It will probably be easier to put up as well. But an 8 ft one surely sounds neat. Maybe a lower detachable ceiling could be velcrowed in so that you could play with them easier and then when they are in there on their own take out the velcro ceiling and let them go nuts. Does that sound any better?

Playing devil's advocate here.

[:"blue"] Yes to #1.

#2 I don't think they will do much gliding, even in a big tent.....maybe a little more jumping?? You have to remember that relative to a tiny glider, even a small tent is pretty big.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to this question. Let's sit back and see what some other GC members think. [/]

Hi Randy, thanks for your opinions. I also would like to hear what some of the others have to say about the 8 footer.
I bet its a pain in the rear to put up.
