I would just like to remind people that many toilet seats are not glider-proof. One day last summer my little Vince found his way into a toilet with the lid down. I think he may have crawled into the space toward the back of the lid. Luckily I heard the splashing and got him out before he drowned, but a wet sugar glider is a sad sight to see! I dried him off and he's still alive today, but I always keep the bathroom door closed!

Mage,

Thanks for sharing that. I know many people use their bathrooms as "glider safe" rooms, this is something they may have not thought of. I tend to keep my guys out of the kitchen and bathroom because I am so afraid of something going wrong. These lil' guys can "find" a way to get themselves into trouble.

This is an important post. Thank you so much for sharing it. I have known this could happen, but my gliders seem so very uninterested in the toilet that I haven't considered this more than a remote possibility. Thanks for bringing it to our attention!

Thanks for posting that! Like Lucy's, my Gizmo doesnt seem too interested in the toilet seat either. But since this is the only "glider safe" room in the house, mine is usually with me when I get ready for work in the mornings.

Also, by the way, if anyone else has the bathroom as the "glider room", watch out for peices of stuff on the floor! Mine tried to eat some crumbs that were in the floor corning this morning! (Seems like I need to sweep better )

I have followed my little one and saw the attempt-to-jump-in-the-toilet scene, so I keep that off limits for her. My biggest fear is the kitchen, since it doesn't have a door on it. I keep one eye on her constantly, but I'm always worried that she'll try to crawl back behind the stove where there's open holes in the walls, climb in there and be lost forever.... sorry, it's a nightmare of mine!!! Especially since she's not much of a noise maker, I'd never know. Parents can never be too careful.

Even if you keep the bathroom door closed, be CAREFUL because some doors have enough space for them to crawl under, remember they can get through things that are bigger than 1/2 an inch!!! My breeder lost a baby in the bathroom because it got under the closed door and the toilet seat was up. I'm one of those worriers and I have nightmares about this kind of stuff.

So many things can be a threat to our little gliders! With my experience with Alex, sugar gliders can climb almost anything! It's always a scarey thing to think that one day, your little glider may get himself into deadly trouble.

I also live in fear of the toilet. At one point I got a baby lockout gizmo, but couldn't figure out how to use it. I've also seen a toilet bowl deodorizer (solid bar) that sits in a white mesh, molded plastic basket that hooks over the edge of the bowl. My thought was to use the empty basket-a glider might be able to reach it and climb to "safety" until he/she was found. Has anyone else thought about this?

Suggestion that works for me...our bathroom is large and the toilet is in its own separate "water closet" but the door does have a gap. I put a large folded towel under the seat and lid and put the seat back down on top of it. No space to let suggies through. My male did go for a swim once but popped right back out because its a shallow bowl. The towel trick has worked for me and now I don't worry about it-they get free run of the bathroom/bedroom.

I had it happen to me last night!
People, PLEASE dont think it will never happen, thats what I thought after reading this thread, that it would never happen. And sure enough! My little girl Sydney fell in, she is fine though. But really tired.
She woke me up at about 5am sneezing in the toilet, I wasnt sure what the sound was, so I got up and checked, and she barely had her head above the water. I quickly picked her up, and blow dried her dry. Then I put her in her pouch and had her with me all night. I also had another glider in with her who snuggled with her to keep her warm.
And now she is her same ole self. Im keeping an eye out for sneezing and a runny nose, just to make sure she doesnt get a cold.
But all seems well, I am DEFINITELY getting that cage door fixed TODAY!!
I got very lucky!
Anyway, just a heads up to everyone else, it CAN happen!

Thanx bunches guys.

We have gaps at the bottom of most of our interior doors, too. So we bought some pretty trim from Home Depot, cut it in pieces the width of the doors and nailed it to the bottom of the doors. They snuck thru alot before, but now they can't fit. Just a suggestion for those with door gaps.

Oh Crystal - that's a scary story! I'm so glad the little one woke you and will be okay. I keep the lid down 24/7, and the bathroom door closed whenever Bugsy is out of his cage. The bathroom door is the only interior door he cannot squeeze under. Guess I'm lucky there.

Thanks for sharing your story. My toilet is also in a separate area and I keep the door closed. I am so glad that your little Vince survived!
