http://www.sugarglider.net/ubbthreads/ub...ge=0#Post326153Called
Are Infections/Illnesses Related to Certain Diets?Got me thinking??????????? So the question I have is there a way to test water at home for anything that we could use to help the health of our gliders? What could be tested for?

We don't personally do the tests, but they do mail us out something every season basically saying don't drink the water. Something about traces of lead, gasoline, and arsenic in the local tap water.
Suggies and I only get bottled water! Maybe a testing kit for aquariums? Or call your local water plant and ask them if it is safe?

you can test for the same things that you test for in a aquarium, ph, Kh, nitrates, choline.. Those are the MAIN tests used, i dont know how knowing those levels will effect the health of your gliders, minus the chlorine.. and as far testing for giardia, i dont know if there are tests for the when it is in water...
I have a filter that attaches to the faucet and it would eliminate any of those things, including giardia.

ok here are some more my fiance was telling me..
theres tests for GH, ammonia, chloramine, phosphate*
he said that all you have to do is call your water company and they can tell you ALL of the levels for everything that is in your water.. some water has a lot of calcium, depending on where you live - you cant test for those at home (that i know of) but your water company knows all the levels of all trace elements in your water/. they can tell you all of the levels DAILY..
really it seems completely useless to test the water because the amount of time you spend testing and then trying to figure out the ppm, and what that means for your suggies and how it will effect them, you might as well go out and buy a reverse osmosis filter, or even a brita filters or some bottles water and just use that. Testing is a HUGE hassle, even for fish tanks and they KNOW what tthe levels should be for every fish, i wouldnt want to try to figure it for suggies.

I have no idea about suggies, but we have recovered Giardia in people who are on well water.

Here is a site that has most local water reports from the EPA. http://www.epa.gov/safewater/dwinfo/index.htmlI don't know if the levels considered 'safe' for people would be safe for gliders or what, specifically, affects them.

Obviously this is not something that would be ideal, or that one would want to have to do all the time
the question came to mind because one of Kristis gliders is suffering form its third UTI, she was questioning if a particular diet was associated.. in the thread I linked to at the top... the only thing that comes to mind was possible water quality issues to me
so I was just wondering if there was anything we could do to test our own water.

I don't know if this will be of any use or not, but we get an annual "Summary of Water Quality" report from our water company. I just got the 2007 one (it's for Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2006), but it's not on their site yet. But if you're interested in seeing reports from previous years, here's the pdf file. Summary of Water Quality Maybe every county/city/water treatment facility has one available.
