I recently had Sparkles urine checked for a UTI. The vet said her PH was a 7, she had some calcium oxalate crystals in it, and a small trace of glucose. She said the glucose (sugar) could be from the fruits. Has anyone ever had this happen before? She is on 2 medications right now, so hopefully she will be better and over the UTI.

John (Xglider) said there was a demonstration done before with gliders and diabetes. Does anyone have any info on that? Also, Jen (Xfilefan) said that gliders shouldn't have glucose show up in their urine.

I don't want to worry, but I am and I'm just hoping the antibiotics will clear everything up. Does anyone know anything on diabetes in gliders?

I don't know much about it but I know it is possible - there was a demo about it at SGGA last year but I can't remember who did it

What could you do if they did have diabetes? I can't imagine trying to balance an insulin dose on an animal that size that doesn't eat everything. Just curious. I don't even know if they can get it or not.

Yes it is possible. I don't remember who did the demo, but I do remember that they used insulin test strips (urine kind) to test the glider's urine.

If the glucose levels are high, I personally would start off by cutting back on the fruits. This is one of the things a diabetic should only have when they are in need of increasing their blood sugars.
I would then get some test strips and test again after you cut back on fruits to see if there was a difference. thumb

I would go for a blood glucose reading-it only takes a drop (such as a quicked nail or tiny puncture). Chronos had it show up in his urine (along with ketones) with a UTI that had gone into his kidneys. Blood glucose testing (thanks Schlep!) ruled out diabetes, and is the right follow up if diabetes is suspected. His blood glucose was normal, even after feeding him high amounts of sweet food/treats-a reading of 105. Once the infection was cleared, the urine abnormalities disappeared.

Question: I am a type 2 diabetic, would a Glider have to be virtually sugar free like myself if one developed diabetes?

I knew dogs and cats could develop it, I didn't think it extended to smaller mammals and marsupials.

I've seen type II dogs and type I. frown I am type I and it is awful trying to control it. Can gliders get type I or is it always type II?

(Type I is where your body doesn't produce enough insulin and you can't use it correctly. Type II is more insulin resistance where your body doesn't use the insulin it has correctly. Type I always requires insulin injections or a pump, Type II can be controlled with diet and exercise, but often requires insulin either in a pill form or injections.)

Thanks for the hug Stac! I will have her checked once her medication is over with and the infection is gone. Hopefully no glucose will show up then! Thank you all! Now I know where to buy testing strips too!
