Deep breath. It's finally time to talk about this tragedy. I fear that it is an all too common story, one which will not be new to anyone's eyes, and won't help anyone. I guess I am back here on this forum as more of a therapeutic move than informative, and I am sorry to take up your space with my story. But I must talk. About a year ago, maybe longer, I bought my first glider Skipper. He was the sweetest little boy, and so caring and gentle. After a few months I decided to get a female to keep him company. Skipper had been neutered and I had no intention to breed. So I bought Pandora from a girl who said that she did not have time for her anymore. When I got her home, I realized that she was a totally different story from Skipper. She didn’t want anyone to be in the same room as her. She crabbed constantly, something that skip had NEVER done; she bit. She was very afraid and unsure. So I came back here, and looked at all the information again. I used it as my bible, asked questions, read every post. And we started getting better together. She warmed up to me slowly, through lots of sitting there with her and lickey treats and worms, she finally came around and would jump on me of her own will. I introduced her and skipper and they got along alright. there was a squabble occasionally, but nothing serious. I got into the habit of leaving the room on occasion during play time to get snacks or check my e-mail. when I would open the door again, they both would jump onto my pant leg and run up to my shoulders. but skipper and panda started squabbling more. I noticed, but didn’t pay it much mind. It was very gradual, but it got to the point where he was chasing her all the time and when he caught up, he would groom and groom and groom her until she crabbed at him to get off. I made sure she was eating and everything. It didn’t seem like aggression on his part, only over affection, and I thought she was just annoyed. One night, though, I opened the door and instead of jumping on me, panda ran out with skipper hot on her trail. I caught skipper, but I never did find panda.. Not even her body. I’ve been leaving food out for months now. I know it's hopeless. Just last night I made myself stop. she's gone. and finally I can admit that I really messed up. I guess the moral is to never assume anything. don’t assume they won't run away, don’t assume they are ok and happy, don’t assume that because you have built trust they are yours forever. Because they can slip away in the blink of an eye. Love them as hard as you can. then, maybe, when you are crying this hard you won’t have as much regret as I do. Maybe I can come back now, and start reading posts again. You are all such wonderful owners; I am honored to be among you. sorry this is so long. Delete it if you want moderators. I feel better just writing this down. thank you.
Rosie (with skipper, purring contentedly, sleeping alone in her lap)

Please don't give up yet. Gliders can be tricky, and are very, very good at playing hide and seek. As John said if the food is being eaten there is a good chance she is still in the house. My prayers will be with you and Skipper.

Dear Rosie , Thank you for sharing your story about Pandora. I know it must have been so very difficult for you to do so. But in sharing, you honor us, by letting us know more about what you have been going through, and by letting us know about your precious Pandora. I am so sorry that the two of you are no longer physically together, but I know that your hearts share wonderful moments and memories, and I think that the two of you have truly touched each other in a deep way. I hope you will find peace in knowing that you have been a sweet and loving mommy to your two sugies, that you did the best you could, and that there is always hope that tomorrow your little girl might just surprise you and come home. You are wonderful, Rosie, so just keep lovin' that sweet sugie you have now. He is very very blessed to have a wowsie mommy like you.

Thank you all for your support and kind words; you don't know how much it means to me to have all your thoughts with her and myself. Panda has been gone since October. The food I leave out is never touched, and I have not found and glider spittings or poop anywhere but in my room, where skipper plays. I am afraid she may have gone into a hole under the sink and either into the downstairs neighbor's or outside. I realized yesterday that now there is a vital concern. In searching for and hoping about panda, I may be neglecting skip's needs. He has been for a lot of months without a companion now. If there is a chance that she will come back, I want to wait for her. She would never do well in a trio situation if she returned and skipper was already bonded to another girl. If there isn't a chance of her returning, though, I want to get skipper another friend so that his life does not have to be spent alone because of my mistakes (which I will NEVER make again). What do you think I should do? I left food out again last night due to everyone's suggestions, and ransacked the house looking for her again. still no sign. Thank you again for your support, I do not know what I would do if i had to hold this pain inside my whole life. thank you, Rosie

Please check with your neighbor to see if maybe, maybe she could be living in the downstairs apartment. There is always a chance. I find it hard to believe she would have gone outside isn't it pretty cold in October in PA. Anyway it is worth trying. Many prayers going your, Skipper and Pandora's way.

I had a very similar situation happen with my first glider also. Definitely check with your neighbors (bring a picture in case they don't know what SG's are), and also try listening in the walls late at night. It's possible he may have found a hole around a drain pipe under the sink, etc, and could possibly be in the walls and can't find his way out. I didn't cook, wash dishes in the dishwasher, etc. I went through this and tore apart my entire apartment and found my glider after 3-days of constant searching, but it wasn't the outcome I was so desparately hoping for. I hate to even suggest this, but I found my glider in the power supply box located in the very back of the oven. I had to unscrew the metal plate that covers the main wires to get to it, but he must have squeezed his way through the only opening to access this part of the oven which was just barely the size of a quarter. If you haven't checked this area, I would because I've read other glider tragety stories that had the same tragic ending in this area. But don't give up hope, and keep looking. My heart is with you and your gliders.
Michi

I'm only been a glider daddy for short time----I have an idea? Do you have an extra cage?? Take a dirty pouch that smells like the others and hang it in the extra cage--with food in the eve. and night??? Maybe??? Your lost one will feel secure and go into the smelly pouch?? Place....a sweaty shirt of yours in the extra cage??? Anything is worth a try?? Watch your dirty clothes hampers?? My friend found her glider in there??
