How to tell when gliders are bonded? #32822

I've had my gliders, Bitey and Bonnie, for about a month and a half now. They were already adults when we got them. They came from someone who couldn't take care of them any longer. So they are used to being around humans and whatnot. We've spent a lot of time with them, and they seem pretty comfortable with us, but how do I know when they're "bonded"? They don't really care to sit still when we take them out to play with them. They're more interested in running around the room, climbing whatever they can, and hiding underneath my shirt. Attempts to grab them when they get in places they shouldn't be have begun to be met with far fewer bites, but they still seem more interested in their environment than me. Any ways to tell whether or not they're becoming bonded?

There are several ways to tell. But I suppose there's one absolute sign that I look for in determining whether a glider has completely bonded. Gliders will almost always jump off you at some point to explore a room if given the choice. However, you are certain that a glider has completely bonded if it comes running back to you and jumps back onto your body when something really scares it; when that happens I'm certain that my glider perceives me as its "Tree of Safety" and best friend. For instance, my glider will often jump back on me and climb to the top of my head when my dogs will enter the room and sniff around us, or whenever there's a loud noise. When he does this, I physically use my hand to "SHOO" the dogs away, or I hold the bonding pouch close to the glider so it can hide, or I use my hand to form a protective cover over the nervous glider. Playing the hero, definitely encourages and cultures bonding and glider security. Tent Playtime with you and the gliders help fortify and build that bond, too!

Remember... day time is bonding time, night time is play time.

The things you describe -- running around during play time, nipping when they're grabbed -- are normal glider things to do and probably will always be the case.

The best time to judge a bond is during snuggle time during the day. I gotta say, though, when they're bonded there won't be a doubt in your mind.

I have had my babies since the end of November. Whenever i used to put my hand to the cage they would run away but don't now. They actually come to me and sniff my hand to see if i have food. I have done tent time twice and went pretty well. They were climbing all over me the first time. I am currently glider proofing my room up to let them run around. I will try to wake them up around 10ish so i have time to watch them and put them back in the cage. How many days should i wait to see if they are bonded with me in my room? (like as come to me). I am kind of nervous to let them out in my room because i dont believe we are FULLY bonded so im not sure if they will come to me to be put back in their cage.

My guy rarely comes to me when he is done playing in my room. He finds his hiding place (usually in my sock drawer) and goes to sleep. For a while, you may want to just keep an eye out to find out where the little ones will go at the end of play time so you can scoop them up and put them away. You will in time, learn their routine, and they yours. I am sure you will get other advice as well. Good luck.

I have the same question as Thad did. People on here talk about how they take them out and they jump from person to person and glide down stairs. But, I guess ours aren't fully bonded with us...they do what Thad said with the coming up to our hands in the cage, and they dont crab at us anymore. But even when they are bonded, how do you know they aren't going to run off somewhere where you can't find them. When do you take them out into your house, not just the tent or small room?

I got mine the day afte Christmas and she still is still has not bonded to me. She is barely starting to take food from a baby spoon. I took her from a breeder that wasn't the best. She has been sick since I got her and has had a hard time breething. She is on antibiotics but I think because she is sick it has slowed down the bonging process because she isn't smelling as well. I told the breeder that she was sick and she told me to bring the glider to her and not take it to the vet because the vet would kill it. She was just out for more money. I did take her to the vet and my new little glider is starting to finally feel better.

Glad to hear your girl is feeling better - and you're probably right that being a bit under the weather has her focus elsewhere rather than on bonding with you. keep in mind that even once she's better it could take more than a couple weeks to really bond with her, especially if she wasn't treated well by her breeder. Good luck
