This all started last Friday night (4-19-02). I went to go feed the "Roo Croo". After grabbing a set of food bowls from the counter top, I noticed that 2 of them had been melted together. I thought "Oh well...my daughter must have been playing in the finger nail polish remover and spilled it on these 2 bowls." It took me a little while to figure out what was spilled on them....but I knew I wasn't going to use them. I set those 2 bowls aside to ask her about them in the morning, and grabbed 2 more bowls. I went ahead and filled the bowls, put them in the cages, and said my good-nights to all of them. I had volunteered to work the next day, so I got up early (6 AM), and went to go read the paper. I noticed that Evie was sitting in her running wheel (not unusual for her), and Roz was in the box (also not unusual). About 6:45, I went to go get ready for work. After getting dressed, I stopped by each cage to say good-bye for the day. When I got the Roz and Evie's cage, I noticed that Evie was shaking uncontrollably. I picked up Evie, and she stopped shaking...so I thought "I must have scared her when I walked by the cage." I went and grabbed a grape for each of them. When I gave them their grape, Roz started having spasms, and spitting-up. I knew then that they were in big trouble. I called the Emergency vet about 45 miles away. My wife and I got to the vet as fast as we could (about 1 hour drive...lots of construction on the interstate). After examining them for about 10 minutes, the e-vets said it looked to them as thought it was calcium deficiencency. After getting a calcium shot, and some sugar water, all seemed fine. We headed out, and went shopping for more glider stuff. When we ot home, about 12:30PM, I let the girls settle in the pouch while I had lunch. About 1 PM, I got the pouch and went to put the girls in their cage. As soon as the girls got into the cage, the spasms and shaking started again. Since the e-vet definately didn't know what they were talking about, I turned to the experts on the board. After many conversations to many different people, I was given advice on what may be wrong. I did a little "detective work", and found that the finger nail polish remover had also contaminated the bowl that Roz and Evie were given. I was given more advice from Ellen and Bruce Ross ("Ellen" on the board). Even after I told the e-vets what had happened, they still continued to say "I still say it looks to me like it is calcium deficiencency." I finally got them to prescribe some oral calcium to help keep them from loosing calcium during their illness (upon the advice from Bruce and Ellen). Ellen called me every few hours to check on the progress of the girls, and to make sure that we stayed awake to keep tabs on them. At about 7:30 am Sunday (4-21-02) Monica fed Evie (they were being fed every few hours). As soon as she was done feeding her, Monica said Evie just rolled over and died. No warning signs. No spasms. No seisures. No nothing at all. We managed to keep Roz going untill Monday morning, when our regular vet opened. We made a trip to his office (across town from the e-vet...another 1 hour trip). He said he thought he could save her, but she would have to spend the night. Upon Ellen's advice, I went and got the ingredients to make and emergency batch of BML for her. One night turned to 2, then 3, and finally 4. On the third night, after a roller coaster ride all week, I was prepared to have Roz put down, before the vet even called. When I called that morning (Friday 4-25-02) I got the news of my life!!!! Roz was gonna pull through, and she could come home that evening!!!! She was still on Phonolbarbitol, Lactolose, and licquid calcium, but that was stuff we could administer at home. Roz is doing much better now, but she is still not all of the way out of the woods yet. Roz is now blind, and having trouble walking, but she is getting better every day. I don't know if she will get to be 100% of her old self (with the exception of the blindness), but I still love her and want to make sure that she has the best life she can have. I really miss my little Evie. She was a very special freind to both me and Roz. She will be sadly missed by all of our family (except for Rosie....who never did like her, but she never got to know her anyway). I'm glad none of you were around when I finally buried Evie.....I wouldn't want anyone to see a grown 33 year-old man cry over such a little creature that he had only had for a year.
I miss you Evie !!!!
I want to thank everyone who helped us, Danielle (sissy70), for putting me in contact with Ellen adn Bruce, Ellen and Bruce (Ellen), for being there for us, and Dr Welle (from All Creatures Animal Hospital), for saving Roz. I also want to thank all of you on the board for keeping us in your prayers.

John,

I'm so sorry to hear about Evie. I'm glad to hear that Roz is doing better. Gliders can definitely lead "normal" lives with blindness. I beleave glideroo has a blind glider that just had joeys. we'llbe keeping you and the croo in our thoughts and prayers.

Don't be ashamed to admit you cried when you lost Evie. I cried when I lost one, too. These little critters just grab hold of a big piece of your heart and it is truly heart breading to loose one. I'm sorry for your loss.

I know exactly how you are feeling. My sweet little boy Cheeko crossed over the rainbow bridge just last Thursday morning. I never realised how much a person could grieve over these sweet little creatures. They are so dependant on us and provide so much love in our lives that we feel such a great loss when they are gone. My sympathy and prayers are with you.

I am so happy to hear that Roz is on the mend. I will continue to keep her in my thoughts.

Don't be ashamed about crying over the loss of Evie, I don't think there is a single person here who wouldn't have cried.

Evie is now a little , and I am sure she will be keeping an eye on you, Roz and the rest of the Croo.

Roz is almost back to her old self. I guess I was a bit premature on the blindness part....she seems to be able to see now. I am needing to find her a cagemate, so she don't have to sleep alone. I still think of Evie every day......it's always the same......"What if I had.....????"

John, as hard as it is, please try not to "what if I" or "if only I" You are a wonderful glider parent, and accidents happen. Please try to concentrate on Roz and helping her adapt to Evie being gone. She will need your full attention! Not to mention all the attention a new baby is going to need! I am keeping you in my prayers for healing and grace. Please forgive youself, I am sure Evie did long before she crossed rainbow bridge. Take care!

Im so sorry John.
I dont know what to say really... please know that you are an awesome, wonderful, truly caring Glider Dad. Evie knew she was loved, and loved you back. I wish Id been there with you when you buried her...I would have cried with you and gave you a big hug. Grieve however you need to, its ok to feel however you feel.

Im sorry John....wish I could take away your hurt.
Love on Roz for us all, and please keep us updated on how Roz is doing.

I am glad to hear Roz is doing better. I know when my female passed on after only having her 2 months I had to have my brother drive 2 hours up because I couldn't get myself to take her out of her cage. My vet was of little help. After hearing about everything I have switched vets.
Arwin and I stopped by Welles office last week and had his nails trimmed. I hope all continues to go well for Roz.

I know how it feels to lose one of your very own. Don't worry, you did the best you could. I'm sure Evie is bragging about what a great owner she has in Glider Geaven. Take care...

John,

I am so sorry for your loss. I know what it is like to lose an animal that you care about. when i was in the 8TH grade I moved with my father. I wanted to get a puppy and so someone that worked with my dad had a cocker spaniel pure bred that they didn't want because they bought her and then she was to hyper for them! Well one day my stepsister boyfriend (who was about 28 i think) came over and when he came in let sierra (my dog)out knowing that when she went out i took her out on the leash. she wasn't able to run free because there was no fence up yet and she was a puppy. anyways when he let her out she ran right into a street and got hit by a car within 5 minutes she had died. My point in telling you this story is that i hadn't even had her 3 weeks. but that was my puppy and i loved her very much. I still miss sierra and i know she is with the rest of my family and pets that have gone to heaven. Also know that "there are holes in the floor of heaven" and she is watching over you all the time. This is something we all go threw and please do forgive your self. You did everything you could to save her and you were at least able to save one!

What sex glider are you wanting? another female

Well.....now the story is taking a very weird direction........Rosie has become ill. She and Rowdy were living in the same cage the Roz and Evie were. I had taken the cage to the car wash.....scrubbed it down by hand...and bleached it. Rosie became sick this morning, and went to the vet in Champaign (Not the emergency vet this time!!!). The really bad part of the story is....Rosie has 2 joeys in her pouch. I've been out of contact from the vet since I left her there...but the vet has my cell number...and will call me if she finds out anything. I will re-post as soon as I know more.

Oh, no!! Not another one! I am praying that Rosie gets better and that her 2 joeys would be unaffected by her illness. I just lost my only joey last Friday and I really miss him. Prayers are sent your way for Rosie and her joeys.

My heart goes out to you and your furrballs. You are all in my thoughts.

Take your time and give the rest of the crew all the love you can. When you are ready, please let us if the vet finds any clues to your tragedy.
