I ran across an article talking about melanism, an all black sugar glider variant. Basically, it's the opposite of albino, in that the glider has an excess of melanin. Anyway, I can find very, very little info on the web about melanism gliders. (Wouldn't that be melanistic glider? )
Anyway, I found only two references to melanism on this site, but I was hoping someone might know more? I would love to see a photo of one. They must be even rarer than albino or leucistic! I wonder how much they would go for??

I don't think anyone has a picture of one...I actually don't even know of anyone who owns one. this has been asked before and I am always very interested in seeing one but no one has ever gotten a picture. Hopefully this time someone will

To my knowledge, there are none in existance at this time. There have been several scams where people have claimed to have melanistic gliders, but they have all been proven to be false. A true melanistic glider would have all black fur (inculding it's belly) and black skin (hands, feet, nose, etc). For a while I was working on a glider registery, which I trashed due to lack of interest in the community. Anyways, while I was working on the registry, I did a lot of research into color variations and discovered that melanisum in gliders is more of a myth than anything at this point in time.

Leyna, Interesting that you were working on a registry. I was thinking today that I should build one. I'm a software developer, so I have the technical skills, and I've done quite a bit of web development too, so I bet I could make a decent one. You said there was a lack of interest, but maybe "if I build it they will come" lol.
I am getting my first joey soon, and would like a female also. I'm not 100% sure one whether I will let them breed, but if I do then I'm a bit worried that I'll wind up breeding him to his niece or something If I get a female from Stephanie then she'll know about both their family lines, but otherwise how would I know?
Anyway, that's interesting that it seems to be a scam. I wonder what the closest to all black has been?

She may be referring to scams where people have taken pictures of normal grays and photoshopped them to make them look black (and the photoshop job was laughable, at best). If you buy from just about any reputable breeder, you will know at least a couple of generations of bloodlines, so inbreeding shouldn't be a problem.

That picture is indeed photoshopped. I was sent that picture while working on the registry. It doesn't really show you what a melanistic glider would look like because if you blow it up, you can see that they didn't edit the gliders paws to be black or dark in color. A true melanistic glider would also have black skin.
