I have a female that has a set of twins 6 weeks oop. I just noticed tonight that she has 2 more in pouch. I can't believe she has more coming so soom. I have heard it is possible, but most of my females usually go 4-5 months between joeys. I have never had this happen. There has been a lot of squabbling in their pouch during the day. I have been taking the babies out to socialize them and give Mom a break. They are eating mealies and BML on their own. Is it ok to continue leaving them with Mom & Dad or would it be best to pull them and put them in their own cage for the next 2 weeks and give them baby BML? I don't want to stress Mom out trying to nurse 4 babies. She gets about 20-25 mealies a day plus Ensure in addition to her BML and fruits and veggies. I also add Woombaroo to her Ensure, but is that enough?

Thanks Judie! The family does have one of Karins big, beautiful, extra roomy, family size pouches in the cage. Plus a couple of extra smaller pouches in case someone wants to go somewhere to get away, lol. But so far, they are all insisting on staying together in the one big pouch. I guess it is possible that they are playing, but it sure doesn't sound like it. I thought I was startinmg to be able to distinguish between their different sounds, but I guess I have a way to go. It always happens when they are in the pouch, so I have never actually witnessed what is actually going on when the screeching is happening. Hmmm.

Even though they are eating on their own, they still have a lot to learn from mom and dad. At this age, they probably aren't still nursing or if they are, it isn't much. Unless you notice one/both getting hurt I would think they are ok to be together. sounds like your gliders give a whole new meaning to "eager beaver"!

I had a similar problem when I put my twin girls in with their new mate... quarrels in the pouch. I put two smaller pouches in the big pouch and the fighting stopped. Now they all sleep in the pouch together in peace.

This is a little but 20 25 mealies a day is WAY to high in fat for any glider (from what I read about them) You should try something low in fat high in Calcium like whole frozen pinkey mice. ( I know it sounds grusome) but it's really better for your glider then all the fat in the mealies is.

Kikster, for a female nursing 4 joeys, I don't see a problem feeding that many mealies unless she starts getting fat... Generally speaking though, you don't really need any meals with the BML diet, but they aren't a bad thing to feed, especially to nursing females.

I am quoting this from a post I made on WSGN. I hope this helps ease your mind. I would KEEP them together. Ma knows best!!!
Quote:
SO WHAT IS IN MOTHERS MILK Although changes in milk composition occur during lactation in mammals, those changes are minor compared with the changes observed in marsupial milk. During early lactation (phase 2) carbohydrate is high (50% of the total solids) and lipid is low (~15% of total solids) in milk. At the transition from phase 2 to 3, carbohydrate is reduced to very low concentrations while lipid content may exceed 60%. Then in the 3rd phase of lactation the low levels of milk sugars are predominantly monosaccharides. Total milk protein is relatively constant throughout lactation, at about 25% of solids, although it may increase around the time of transition from phase 2 to 3. During phase 2 whey proteins account for 50 to 85% of total milk proteins, but the proportion of casein may increase in phase 3 milk. Secretion of at least one additional whey protein is induced during the transition from phase 2 to 3. The function of this whey protein is unknown. These changes in milk composition occur independent of what is happening in an adjacent gland. So, when the mother is nursing joeys of two different ages she is simultaneously producing two types of milk of very different compositions, one for the joey in the pouch and one for the older joey that is outside of the pouch.

You can read my whole post HERE

Wow, Esty! That is fascinating information!!! Thank you for sharing it with us!!! I had never heard that before. I can't believe that the mother makes 2 different types of milk simultaneously! VERY interesting!!!
On a side note, Mom is quite thin and with back to back pregnancies, she can have all the mealies she wants. In the wild they tend to beef up on protien during breeding season. Of course, in the wild I don't think they breed year round...do they?

Give Mom all she wants AFTER she eats her BML or what ever diet she is on, you want to be sure she dosen't over feed and not get what she really needs, vitamins.
