Peek, Willams oldest boy, was just on the side of his cage hacking and bringing stuff up. Going to vet now. Will update.

Just got back from the vet. Nothing came up on physical exam, so I had him do an Xray. It looks like he may have the beginnings of a blockage in his lower intestine-he hasn't pooped today that we can tell. It isn't very big, but dense enough to show up white on the films from every angle. So we're going to dose him with liquids and vegetable oil to try and get whatever it is to pass through. I WILL NOT lose another one to this-I SIMPLY WON'T!! So for now a watery diet and veggie oil, and watch for poop.

What he was doing earlier was gagging several times, and then the liquidy remains of the few mealies and yogurt drops he had after his nail trim this morning came up in his mouth. He did this three times. It didn't actually dribble out. I thought it conceivable something got stuck in his throat (unlikely hours after the fact)-but something told me after William to go check it out. I have to go to work, Hubby will be watching him tonight, and I'll update more when I get home. Keep him in your thoughts that whatever it is will go through. Everything else looked good. Thanks for the good wishes, and sorry the first post was so cryptic on the way out the door with him.

Poor guy. The wet diet and mineral oil should clean him out.

Sending Get Well Wishes for a speedy recovery.

Well, we got a little poop, but it didnt' contain what's in there yet. And now I have a pretty good idea what it is. So we keep waiting and watching.

This is my fault. Like with his dad (though with him we found absolutely nothing) first thing was to go through ALL the toys they've had contact with. We found something. A hard plastic ball I would've swore was safe, and have no clue HOW he managed this. Where there's a will, there is apparently a way, though. I know my friend has these for her gliders as well, and I called and told her what happened. I feel awful. Pic attached.

I don't know if your vet told you about PUMPKIN but it works very well on gliders as a laxative and may help with the passing of the obstacle . Ask your vet and see what they say . You can get canned pumpkin in the pie section of the grocery store and its all natural.....we didn't have any trouble getting our little ones to eat it and it worked great . However, if your vet gives you the ok and yours won't eat it, try putting some honey mixed with it...they'll love it then Keep us informed and good luck with the poop watch.

Pumpkin is high in fiber-it can help soften hard stools, or form soft ones. Basically, it helps balance things out. But for our purpose-we don't want anything solid in there that can make things worse, hence, oil and liquid. Technically, we're almost trying to give him the runs-

If he does not pass the obstruction soon...you might want to keep the option open for surgery to remove the plastic that has his intestine blocked. Last thing you want is for him to become weakened due to him becoming septic to where his chances of pulling through are slim.

We're keeping that option open. He is drinking his Ensure, so I know he's getting vitamins/minerals. And juice and water. He hasn't gagged or tried to throw up since this afternoon, and we're watching close for any bloating at all. Peek isn't even our bad chewer-Teal'c is. I have no idea what posessed him to do this in the first place, or how he got a grip on the tiny hole in that ball I wouldn't have thought he could even fit his teeth into. First sign of anything worsening, he goes right back to the vet. We had two working with us today, Emch and Matheson at Pet ER-they're optimistic it's small enough to pass. We'll see.

Praying for Peekster, and hoping this incident passes soon (no pun intended). I am surprised at this though, I know glider's chew, but to ingest plastic seems baffling to me. Do you think it was an accident, or he wanted to eat it? I had to be intentional, I would think.....but then again, what do you think Jen? Makes me think we should reevaluate what toys are safe.

Karin, this particular little ball rattles. I'm thinking he was maybe trying to get at that-he didn't though thank God. We found the "rattle part" in the cage pan (after William, we took all the links out of their floor, raised it 3 inches, and reattached with cable ties so they couldn't get at anything in the pan anymore.) I was shocked at what the "rattle" was-2 tiny steel ball bearings-small enough for them to eat if they wanted-I'll post a pic of those. They've never done this to a hard plastic ball before-and we're currently re-evaluating all of their toys-several have already hit the trash including some wood bird toys.

I think we got the culprit this morning. The poop in question, was very large, and hard, and had something in it. Followed by a couple more big ones that consistency wise were fairly normal. He ate some mealies and fruit after, and didn't get sick, and still hasn't. We're going to keep watching and checking for awhile to be sure. It may have been moving through, just very, very slowly so as to start backing things up in there. Let me get a pic of the little bearings and I'll attach it. Hopefully he'll be okay now.

BTW-Couldnt' believe it when I came on today and saw Peek on the front page!! Thanks everyone!!

Okay, here's the pic of the 'rattle' balls. So you can get an idea of just how small they are, I put a push-pin next to them. I'm definitely going to choose their toys with even more care than usual from now on...

I'm glad Peek's experience maybe helped keep another glider from going down the same road! He's doing MUCH better tonight, and finally pooped a LOT! Now he's eating, drinking, playing and having his family rubbing all over him to welcome him back -since we had to keep him separate to monitor the poop, and make sure it was his. I am so relieved. I was about to go get ready for work, and could so easily have missed that little episode of his that was what told me something wasn't right. If I had, it might have been too late. I try and share even my own 'stupid moments', in the hope someone else won't make the same mistake-and believe me, I feel pretty stupid over this one . I'm glad you found it before they got hurt from it!

[:"magenta"]aw, jen. don't feel stupid. personally, i would much rather feel like an idiot than have anything happen to my babies (glider, ferret, or otherwise.) glad peeky (sorry, i just had to make his name sound even cuter) is doing better, and is back home, safe and sound. and i really appreciate the warning. i would never have thought any manufacturer would be stupid enough to make a toy with such tiny balls as that! most any animal could choke or get an obstruction from ball bearings that tiny! it is unbelieveable! [/]
