Okay. Okay, I'm trying very hard not to panic.

I have three gliders, two one-year old girls and a 2-year old boy. The two girls are pregnant - I've been able to gently feel a jellybean-sized joey in each pouch.

Just now, I was holding their cage pouch in my lap and my younger girl, Tillie, rolled onto her back to eat a mealie. Her joey's head was out of the pouch! I promptly freaked out, but caaaaaalmly maneuvered the pouch until the joey was back inside. Tillie didn't seem phased at all.

Does the joey have any chance of surviving now? Will it reattach at this age? I'm estimating that the joey's about.. nearly two weeks old, now. Why did it come out? Will it survive? Is there anything I can do?

Er, in short.. help?

The joey has only been in the pouch for 2 weeks since birth? If so, I am pretty sure there is no chance it could reattach. What did the joey look like when you saw it?

Like a pink jellybean. I mean, I knew it was the head that was out. I could see.. the ear buds, I think, and little hands.. I mean, there's no way it could be any older, because I only introduced my male on December 12th. And it's now January 9th. That's less than one month, minus the 16-day gestation period, right? So even if they mated on the very first day, the joey could only be.. 11 days old?

Yeah, I'm really sorry. There is most likely little to no chance for survival because the baby cannot reattach and I seriously doubt it can be hand fed.

Aw, Hon, I'm so sorry! Chance of survival is very slim at this point. As Jessica said, the little one is too small too reattach and it is impossible to hand feed at this stage.

Oh, I'm sorry this happened. I know less than nothing about breeding gliders. I just wanted to tell you I feel for ya. Hopefully the other joey will do fine.

In that case, I have a somewhat morbid question. Will the baby eventually come out of the pouch itself, or do I need to remove it and dispose of it? Will Tillie.. er, eat it or something? Erk. Not sure what to do. I guess Tillie can probably take care of things herself.

Yes, the parents will know what to do. They will most likely eat it. You do not need to do anything but let nature take its course. I'm sorry.

Okay, I'm sure everyone's sick of my fretting, but:

It's been a few days now and Tillie hasn't eaten the joey (as far as I can tell). She still has something in her pouch and it seems to be getting bigger. At least, her lower belly seems fatter.

It's hard to give up on that little shred of hope that the joey could still be alive, especially when I'm yet to find a body or any sort of gross mess or.. anything. Is it possible I maybe saw the joey's little butt and his mouth was still attached to the nipple?

Trust me to mistake a butt for a head, but.. Okay, maybe I should just let go and stop wondering. I think about it a lot, though. I think I'm losing sleep. x.x

I think what you need to do is just sit back and relax, in a couple of weeks you will know for sure if she has one in pouch or not, who knows maybe she had more than one in there and something only happened to one of them.

Dont stress (easier said than done I know), if you do she will. One day at a time....can you get any pics of her?

Well, call me Queen of De Nile.. .. but it's been a week since the little incident and Tillie's joey is still in her pouch. In fact, she still cleans it - I just saw her. It definitely didn't look.. uh.. decomposed at all. Or nibbled on. It all looked.. pretty.. normal..

Wierd.

ETA: Yep, it's definitely alive. His little butt was just hanging out of her pouch again, and he was like a perfectly formed little joey, just.. about half an inch long and totally naked, heh. But he had little paws and little legs and even a little tail, all wiggling to push him back into the pouch. I even saw that his little tummy was full of milk! I helped him in by opening her pouch up a little, same as I did last time, and he wiggled all the way in.

I won't get my hopes up - there's still at least 7 weeks before they come OOP - but hey, maybe miracles do happen!

Having a new joey is a very exciting time, however, do not be alarmed that you see body parts hanging out of the pouch. This is normal. I am not real sure it is a good idea for you to be opening the moms pouch up, as when the baby is ready to go back into pouch or mom wants it in there, it will definetly be done!! I would have to advise not to mess with moms pouch so that way no bacteria can be spread and she doesnt get an infection. Just sit back and watch the amazing time of a baby joey growing and soon, detaching and developing a little personality all of its own!!
