My sugar glider, Neo has a long health history despite being only one year old. The glands that provide lubrication to the cloaca area became swollen and infected in the past. Baytril and a neuter, simple enough...

...Neo was recently put in a cage to live with two boys, we bought a girl for him but she is tiny and he kept trying to fight her. We filled out applications for numerous rescues but because I was 17 at the time (18 now) my age was a huge punch against me actually getting a rescue.

Being with the boys, despite the neuter caused him to get overly excited and he had his penis out for 24 hours. The tip was black so we took him to the vet as soon as I realized that he had not retracted it at all in that 24 hour time period. The vet removed the tip of his penis, but the cloaca is so swollen (not exactly sure why) that he cannot retract it and urinate or defacate.

They used a syringe to remove some urine from Neo's bladder, that was a one time thing done for the emergency. I was visiting at the time they tried to install a tube, but he was too swollen and too small for it. He looked horrible too, when I visited.

Right now, Neo is in surgery so they can try to get the swelling to go down and see if there is something else causing the swelling. I will continue to update here about how surgery went if he makes it through.

Have the vet check the anal glands and the scent glands within the cloaca to make sure they are not impacted... I know that both can become impacted and cause severe swelling frown My Cricky had to have his scent glands expressed while under anesthesia one time - after that he was fine smile I know another member (can't remember right now if it was Dancing or Xfilefan) had a glider with impacted anal glands... also surgically repaired and he did fine thumb
Best wishes and please do keep us posted hug2
