I got back from the vet this afternoon, taking Josc to get a checkup on that foot after the move. He's fine, and I was fairly sure he was fine, but I figured it couldn't hurt to get it checked and get a check up, get acquainted with the local vet, etc. So I came back from vacation to find out that my room mate is now feeding the area's stray cats and bought a guinea pig. Worries me a bit, cuz cats... Josc. Grr. But Jeffery (the guinea pig) is so neglected. It's pitiful. He's stuck in a cage not half the size of Josc's all day. No one plays with him, I think, except me.

That's not my problem, though. My problem is he's sick. He had an eye infection, and I'm not sure exactly what else, but all the fur is gone under his left eye. And I'm panicking that my poor, mildly traumatized glider (who appeared in my backpack by magic on the airplane home with the missing foot. Because Ade doesn't seem to want the guinea pig, I've been playing with him a bit, letting him out of his cage and petting him a bit. He's warming up to me, but I keep Josc well away from Jeff, and vice versa. Ade is trying to convince me to house them in the same cage, since Josc's is so big. She wants to introduce the two of them to each other. I have been battling her hard on it, and it came to a head yesterday when I caught her trying to pull Josc out of his pouch in the middle of the day, Jeff nosing around the bottom of his cage and nibbling on the tidbits I left Josc. Needless to say, I had a cow. I've never screamed so much in my life.

But now I'm thinking. Am I justified in my concern? We've been back a little more than a week, Josc's leg is healing fairly well, and he's eating, drinking, and being his mischievious self, if slightly skinnier from being hidden in my car for almost a week. I'd want to say, were I reading someone else's post, that I'm being paranoid. But I have to go pick up a rescue this morning (seperate cage, of course. This guy's in bad shape.) and between my two little 'uns, and Ade's actions, are my fears justified? Should I get out (or make her get out) if this behavior continues? What should I do?

I would say deff keep all ur animals seperate...my rabbit had mites and my STO has gotten a small case of them too and shes in the same room as my rabbit but theyve never come in contact so its deff better for u to b safe than sorry...u shud deff take the guinea pig to the vet and get it checked out or give it to a no-kill shelter if hes being neglected...just take matters into ur own hands if you think that is rite...i would say that ur living arrangement isnt good so there should deff be some changes in that department....do wut u think is best for all parties involved in this (do wuts best especially for the animals since they are helpless w/o ur help)...idk if this is any help but its all i got lol...good luck and keep us updated

[:"green"]You definitely have valid concerns about the safety of your glider being with other animals. I used to have a Dwarf Rabbit in with my gliders. They got along great! They really loved each other a lot. However, when my vet came to my house, she nearly had a canary! Apparently, rabbits are a carrier of a virus called Pasteurella. It is highly contagious and very deadly for Sugar Gliders. Wow! I had no idea that I had been endangering my gliders for over a year!!! She informed me that I not only had to remove the rabbit to a seperate cage, he also needed to be in an entirely different room of the house that the gliders would have no access to... [She also informed me that my cats were a potential carrier, as well. She said that as long as they didn't spend all of their time in the room with the gliders, they would be okay. She also said it was a good thing the litter box was in a different room.]
Now, I don't know if guinea pigs are a carrier or not, but I would definitely check with the vet to find out...
As far as whether to evict your roommate or not... That is definitely up to your own discretion... However, I would advise her that if she pulls a stunt like that again, you would have no choice... As you already know, gliders are very delicate critters and you have to make their health one of your top priorities (as it sounds like you already have) .

Gliders should never be housed with another animal, especially one who is sick. I would think about a lock for your bedroom and putting your glider out of your roomies reach for safety. As for the guinnie pig, if it is sick, and you can, take it to the vet. If not, and you don't mind an all out war with your roomie, there are rescue groups who may can help by taking it in and finding a good home for it. You can find them by Googling. As for the stray cats, again, the locked up bedroom can keep your gliders away from them. If you are picking up a rescue who is ill tho, you do not want it housed in the same room as your glider until it's quarantine is up and it has been health checked by your vet with an ok to do so. Always be very sure to wash your hands after messing with any other animals before messing with your furbaby. I even change clothes (so I am paranoid to..lol ) just to be sure I am not carrying anything. Good luck with your situation.

I agree, lock on your bedroom door or new roomie!!

So did you literally get your glider because it came into your backpack on an airplane and you have no idea who the owner was? And are you the one who lost a glider in your car a couple weeks ago and we all thought he was dead?

For now, you could try putting little luggage locks on the doors of the cage to keep your roommate from getting to your lil guy. I agree, though, that the two should NOT be kept together, your roommate situation doesn't sound very good, and that the infection in the guinea pig's eye could be contagious.

No, Josc is the one that WAS lost in the car for a week, and I firmly believed he was dead, until on the first leg of the plane trip home, I heard him crabbing in my backpack. Lucky no one else noticed. The rescue, Alinnya, is not sick, but I have been keeping them seperate (the best I could do, with Ade around, is to put her in the bathroom.) She's just evilly malnourished- stupid woman kept her on a diet of rabbit food, turkey, with some fruit. I'm taking her by the vet Monday. She's sleeping on me at the moment. So far Ade and I haven't spoken, but I do know the guinea pig has been taken to the vet (from what I understand, because she didn't have to pay for it.) I'm not thrilled with her, and she's heard as much. So she knows to leave the suggies be unless I'm around. The problem is that I'm almost never around when she is. Our schedules don't coincide at all. So I can't say I know for a fact that she's neglecting the guinea pig, but the way he acts when I walk into the house suggests to me she is. Thanks for the info, I'll keep you posted.

Wow that is some story. I agree not to let any other aminals be around your gliders. How is is that the airlines didn't notice you had a glider in your backpack? Didn't you have to put your backpack through the x-ray machine?

If I were in your situation, not knowing if someone was going to get into my glider's cage while I was gone, I think I'd find a way to padlock it. Is that workable with yours? Then only you have a key, and can undo it when you're home, but no one would be able to get in without either you being there, or taking the cage completely apart. I know it sounds a bit odd, but with an autistic son, I've had to padlock some pretty odd things. (Not the cages yet, though). I'm sorry you've had to go through this, and so happy to hear your lost little guy is okay and back with you!

I'm learning to hate Murphy. I spent the past two days in the vet's office- turns out the guinea pig had ringworm, mites, and a cold, and Joscelin, over the two days I left him home, got all three. I took Alinnya in, but she's okay, and I'm having her stay with my friend Donovan, who absolutely adores and has started to bond with her. Josc's gotten a bad infection really quick from where the mites where chewing his leg, and he was sming trying to make them stop...

Things not looking good. Things not looking good. My roommate is claiming she can't afford to stay here any longer. I'm about to be homeless. My baby is about to die.

I need a drink. I'll be at the vet's office.

I'm so sorry to hear that! It will take time for the meds to work though, and in the meantime, you can't let him chew at himself. I'm going to post the ecollar directions:

ECollar

You would be surprised at how fast sm can go from bad to critical, and I would encourage you to put the guy in a collar until some of the discomfort alleviates. A glider can chew a hole in its body, or toes or a foot off in a matter of a couple of hours or less. And at that point the chances of survival go down dramatically.

You and Josc are in our prayers. Please keep us updated!

Sorry about the long silence. It's been an emotional (and expensive) couple of days. Remember me saying there was nothing Josc couldn't get out of (or into?) We couldn't keep him in the ecollar without choking him. I don't know how he managed it. It wasn't that the infection was so bad, but he'd keep gnawing at the mites and the ringworm coated his face and the infection flamed up and he wouldn't eat anything... it just spiralled. Quick. My baby didn't have anything left to give me, and spent most of yesterday just lying on the cage floor unconscious. I had the vet put him to sleep. I didn't want to see him like that any more, and I think he gave up somewhere in the middle. One scrape too many, and our luck didn't hold out.

After all that, Adrienne had the balls to ask me to loan her 200 for the rent this month. Didn't even mention paying back the vet bills. I had a screaming fit at her, and am signing off the lease tomorrow. Nowhere to go, no money to do it, but at least I'll be out of that mess. Josc'd be proud of me, I think.

Don't know when I'll be on next... but my cell's 623.687.1591 and if anybody around phoenix could float me a shower and use of the washing machine some Saturday afternoon, I'd appreciate. Heck, just a call to say 'hey, how you doin, things goin okay?' would be appreciated.

Keep me in your prayers, you haven't heard the last of me yet, and thanks guys for all the support, all the good info, and all the putting up with me.

Topic closed. Love y'all. Be back soon.

Kat

Wow what an ending. The whole ordeal is quite sad. I still can hardly believe he lived for a week without care. I'd lend you a shower and w/d but I am quite aways from you. Good luck to you.
