We've had our little guys for about three weeks now. They are an adult breeding pair and it's great how they come running when either of us comes near their cage.
However, they sleep from around 6AM till 11PM or so. Is there a proven way to alter their sleep schedule to allow us more play time?

Thanks

What time are you feeding them? Mine usually wake at the time I feed them. Do you keep a light on in the room they are in? My gliders will sleep for a long time if I leave the light on in their room.

We refill their dishes around 8 in the evening and as soon as we get up in the morning. We give them a treat as soon as they wake up in the evening and as soon as we get up in the morning, Their cage is in the breakfast nook in an open floor plan kind of house, so they are near us in the evening as we read or watch TV.

We're waiting for bonding pouches to arrive in the mail. Maybe that will help?

What diet do you have them on? Most feed their gliders at night. Does one of the diet plans call for morning feedings?
You can work on waking them each night just a bit earlier (by 15-30 min incriments) until they are waking up about 8-9pm.

They are still new to their surroundgings. Suggest you wake them up in the evening when you feed them. Remove their bed for awhile if you have to...giving it back to them in an hour or so. Also, make sure the lights are turned down low...for if the room is lit with bright lighting this will discourage them from coming out as well.

bonding pouches will help...however, night time is playtime...so one needs a glider proofed area to let them explore in. If there is no room available...get one of those pop up tents for $20 at Wal-Mart. The tent thing really speeds up the bonding process.

Dancing,
We're feeding them the same Quicko pelletized glider food they were eating when we got them. We replace it each morning, and feed fresh fruit & veggies in the evening. I give them a mealy worm or cricket morning and evening. Licky treats are baby food sweet potatoes.

I would strongly advise against altering your glider's sleeping patterns. It is easy to do of course, but it is not a very healthy choice for your gliders. Gliders are nocturnal animals, and need to be that way to be healthy, just like how people need to be awake during the day, even though some may not be up all that much, lol. I would not alter your gliders' sleeping patterns. I will try to find you some scientific info on it, I know that one thing it has to do is seratonin. Altering a couple hours might be fine, but do not do anything too drastic. What you could do is start feeding them around 7, that way they are awake a couple hours earlier anyways, and they are still in what is considered night hours, right now anyways. Gliders are healthiest when their natural habitats are closely immitated. If you want get them up a couple hrs earlier, do as I stated, but do not try waking them any earlier than that. Good luck with your new gliders!

Yes, a couple of hours is the most we want to change. Maybe up at 8PM instead of 11PM for playtime

My gliders don't mind at all if I wake the about 8pm for play time. Usually later during the summer though. Generally I average about 2 hours after full dark. If they are waking now about 11 on their own, try waking them at 10:30 for a week or so, then move it to 10 etc...
I encourage you to visit the diet links and study the diets. Go to the top of the page under GC links (pull down menu) then down to GC links then to GC diet links. There are several "proven" diets listed there that have been formulated to be healthy balanced diets for gliders. diet is so important for the health and long life of your glider.
Hard pelleted food is not good (in my opinion) and can lead to health issues such as abcesses in the mouth/jaw called Lumpy jaw and can be quite serious.

Thanks, Dancing. We've been wondering about that pelleted food too, but were letting them adjust to their new home before making ALL the changes. We're going with the Suncoast plan, so the staple will be soft and we like the idea of fresh food.
This board is an incredible resource.

Good deal. I'm glad to hear you will be going with a better diet. You might want to start with mixing half and half, the soft staple with their current and see which they will eat. If they ignore the hard pellets, you should be safe to go ahead and make the switch.

Oh, and we all love pictures! (hint hint!)
