Okay so last night I was doing the rounds as usual feeding,
watering, cleaning the glider room. I had my cat Bob inside (she's fat and usually lays herself in a place un noticable.) I left the door to my glider's room open (yes they have thier own room) while I went into the kitchen to get their food and water. I came back and I noticed one of my dachshunds laying on the bed (which is normal if I accidentley leave the door open.) So after I put their new food and water in their cage and locked the gliders up for the night I grabed Dosh (my dachsund) and left the room turning off the light and closing the door tightley behind me just incase the ferret got out he wouldn't be able to open the door. I then grabed my female dachshund put her in her carrying purse and left to go into town to rent some late movies at block buster. When I got home it was a little after 11:00pm and I went back in to check on my gliders (because I like to watch them eat at night) and I opened the door flicked on the light and there was my CAT! I freaked obiousely but to make matters worse she let both my gliders out of their cage! She didn't hurt them but some how she moved the upsliding doors to their big bird cage! I knew it wasn't me that left the doors open because I destinctley remember closing all the doors when I put thier food in and the door was open in a manner I hadn't seen before slightley ajar and starge the way it was staying open lol! My cat knows how to open human doors so I guess this wasn't to hard for her! She must have sneaked in under the bed where I couldn't see her when I was feeding them. I'm just lucky I came home intime before anything else happened!!

Indeed. I guess I'll have to check under the bed from now on before I leave my glider room!! Lol I'm really happy nothing happened but boy my heart sure stopped when I saw my cat in there and only one glider out! It took a bit of searching before I found the other one hiding in the corner! Man I was sure worked up!

Oh goodness! How frightening for you! SO glad everything turned out ok!

You mentioned that your cage is one of those bird cages with the doors that slide up.... do be aware that gliders are perfectly capable of opening those doors. You'll want to find a way to lock them shut.

OH MY!! That was quite a read! So glad things turned out the way they did and not in a fatal manner.

I agree with Natalie, please be sure to find some way of locking those doors. Gliders are very smart creatures and can open some doors as well.

i would put twist ties on the cage doors and then ck the room under the bed so next time nothing worse happens. i use double locks then close the door and have a door guard so they couldnt get under the door even if they tried we have to try all preventative matters for these guys.

I have a large bird cage too, and had to find a way to keep the doors that slide up (on mine the're where you put the food dishes) secure. The best thing I've found to use is the little round things that attach a rope perch to the cage. My gliders distroyed one of the ends of their rope perch, and I discovered that if you pull the rope out, you're left with a good little lock, which you can place above the sliding doors. I'll add some pictures, because it's hard to explain!

Hey that's a good idea lol. See, I thought that they could open these doors but never had proof. I kept my Gizmo's cage locked with thread the first month and a half I had her but I never saw any proof they could open these doors and there really whern't any topics on it so I stopped because I thought it was useless. Glad you pointed me in the right directions I'll put some locks on their cage tonight.

Just another idea - I have a large bird cage with doors that slide up for my suggies too. I use clothespins to keep them securely shut.

Hey Stacie we think alike . Unfortunately, I have one girl cat who is a wiz at opening things. She loves to pull out my dresser drawers and play with my freshly washed pajamas . Yep my Tinkerbell is quite ingenious. I used clothespins too, but when I watched my Tink reach up and wrap her mouth around the clasp end one day , I knew that wouldn't work too long. I do use a clip, but it is a little harder for the buger to get off. I've attached a pic. Now Tink can try all she wants. She can't get it off at all .

I would definately try to use some ties for the glider cages and check for the cat from now on. Even if he can't gt them out he may still try and get their tales. Glad to hear everything turned out ok.
