Gliders should get everything Sub-q. Thats right under the skin, usually between the shoulders. Can you tell us what the emergency is? More info would be helpful. I am keeping you in my thoughts and prayers! Angie

Can you have her call another vet? Sometimes they will call for help. Please tell her to come here to GC if she won't listen. Where are you located, maybe someone here will know of a vet you can see? Angie

I'm so sorry to hear that. Sometimes even all we know to do isn't enough. Sending and know that Caver will be waiting for you at the Bridge. Does the vet have any idea at all what was wrong?

There is not a lot of information in the post about presenting signs and what problems were going on during the veterinarian visits, but this does not sound like a penicillin allergy causing Caver's problems. It sounds like the illness that led the veterinarian to begin amoxicillin did the damage. Some infections are just too far along to be stopped. Or the infection can create so many metabolic problems that the infection becomes secondary after the antibiotics begin, but the other problems advance. If you read many posts of very sick gliders that received subcutaneous fluids, the report that the glider seemed to do better, but later became more ill again is not uncommon. That can be from a number of different reasons. A dehydrated glider will absorb some of the sub-Q fluid and temporarily make things better as the fluid moves from under the skin and into the veins. Some of that improvement is replacing fluid losses, but the conditions that led to the losses are still going on and in no time the patient will be right back where things started. IV's in the hospital for people keep running fluid in for a many hours, and intermittent sub-Q fluids may need to be repeated to keep up. And the absorption of sub-Q fluids is slower than we wished it was, especially if the patient is really sick and needing the fluids in a hurry. Another problem is that dehydration and fluid loss is often accompanied by electrolyte abnormalities (sodium, chloride, calcium, sugar). We are not testing or correcting any of these abnormalities with intermittent sub-Q fluids at home. So it would be easy to miss these problems, and if missed, then they go untreated. Many times glucose and calcium are given as well to cover for these potential problems. If a patient is really in a bad way, and this is a rare issue, an interosseous infusion (sticking an IV right into a bone) and giving fluids rapidly can be life-saving. In human medicine, I have done this a number of times in dire emergencies. A patient can be so dehydrated that all the veins are collapsed and an IV just can't be done. Another time we use a bone line is when the patient is in full arrest or critically dehydrated. There is just no time to play around with IV's, and a line into the bone is easy and fast. A sub-Q infusion is too slow in such a situation (we have even given up on doing this in people nowadays). So the veterinarian's idea of a line into the bone is not way off base. And an IV in a glider is about impossible. The bone IV may have been about the only option, even if not a good one. We don't know from the data here whether that was the right call or not, but the trained professional attending the glider at least entertained it. Again, this is not done lightly or often, but it is sound logic. I'm sorry Caver passed on. I hope this post helps explain the situation that may have occurred, or helps others.

i would have a direct fecal float and ck up for the remaining glider since whatever killed caver could be a number of things and this way you know it didnt pass on . as gliders hide their illnesses and this one u have can appear healthy and a month from now die suddenly. so i would have a direct fecal float run and bring him /her in for a ck up if u look in your yellow pgs there got to be an exotic vet.
