My male and female just produced their first joey, it is 1 week oop and I thought it was a male because it looked like a little of the male anatomy came out of the genital area (not sure how to explain, sorry) but there is a small slit in the belly area like a pouch but then I can't explain what I thought was a penis? Do male joeys have what looks like a pouch that could be the pom poms later? I would just like to know and I'm going crazy trying to figure this out. Thanks

Thank you, I was hoping and thinking it was but then something came out a little bit of her urinary area so I didn't know what to think. I was going to keep it if it was a girl so thank you so much, I was trying not to get too attached thinking I would have to sell him. Thanks, Renee'

F.Y.I. Male joey's only have 1 tiny little (very noticable) pom pom... you would know if it's a boy... pom pom vs pouch/slit... Good luck with your new little girl!!

[:"green"]To clear up the confusion about what looked like a penis... It is actually an extension of the cloaca (the universal portal that all gliders have for urinary/colon/reproductive tracts). It is used by the parents to stimulate the joeys to urinate & deficate while in-pouch and for the first couple weeks out-of-pouch . As the joey matures, it slowly gets absorbs into the rest of the cloacal tissue.
I have a couple of young joeys right now - one male & one female. I will try to take pictures of them later when Mama's out eating her breakfast, then I will post them so that everyone can see the difference...
You are not the first one to mistake it for a penis, nor will you be that last... I thought my first two joeys were boys at first, too. It turned out one was a girl & one was a boy, which I was able to determine once I could see the pouch & the pom-pom... Congrats on your little girl!
[:"green"]This is another picture of the male joey's anatomy - showing a close-up of the cloacal extension & pom-pom... (FYI This joey is 8 days o.o.p.)
In a realtionship with the man i am going to marry I am in Cuero Texas with 3 kids. I am the mother of 4 kids and the soon to be step mother of 5 more. I have only one set of gliders. My kids are Sandra 16,Alex 12, Juanita 7 and Kathy 4 Whitney 13, Taylor 11, Charity 9 Brent 10 and Austin 5

Welcome to GC!! I felt like such a goof when my first set of twins were born...I was all excited because I saw what you did & thought I had little boys, now with my new set of twins, they are DEFINITELY boys, & now I know what everyone means when they say "you'll know the first time they come out". I thought the testes would "drop" (like in puppies), but you can see the pom plain as day from the get go. Please feel free to ask any questions here, this site is INCREDIBLE!

[:"green"]I was able to get a picture of my female joey this morning. This picture shows her belly with pouch & cloaca. Notice that the cloacal extension is getting much shorter - she is 13 days o.o.p.
I have a page that I am still working on..so not all the photos are up, there are probably a million mistakes....but it has a 1 day oop joey photo of both sexes.
Thanks Jennifer... boy oh boy, I think I may have a problem!! I bought "Loki" thinking he was a boy (the seller was sure s/he was), but, from your pictures, I see that the pom-poms are present from day one. Loki is just a tad under three months, and I do not see the poms!
*gulp*
Either "he" is "stunted" *coughs* ... or I think I have a girl! I am gonna have to take another (much closer) peek! Thanks for the excellent photos!

Was he fixed? It is possible that the vet removed the pompon if he was. I am glad you found it helpful! LOL it is a long way from being done....but slowly and surely!

Hi Jennifer, no, "s/he" wasn't. The seller genuinely didn't seem to know, since I think he was her first baby (feeling kinda silly here). I wanted TinkerBear to have a little man, since Sugi was too old for her (and I found him an older female, Reese). I just didn't want Tink to feel left out, you see, and I wanted her to have a snuggle-buddy.
Since I have used this website so much, I thought I could find out by asking her if she could see a pouch (we were on the phone before I drove down south, haha). She said she saw nothing like that; then, I asked if she saw any kind of gland area on the chest, and she said she thought she saw a little something . . . but was certain that there was no pouch at all. So, since she didn't see a pouch, we just figured out it must be a boy (I can just imagine "seasoned parents" are getting a good chuckle out of this! *giggles*).
I thought that I had read something about "the little sac dropping" so just assumed "s/he" hadn't "blossomed" yet. Anyway, I drove down to see the little bugger, and what a little sweetie "s/he" was . . . and "Loki" was ours. I just couldn't resist! I am so tempted to wake the little darling up, but I am going to bet my little boy is probably a little girl! *blushing*
Your site is really very nice, and I visit it pretty often.

Sorry to hear your little boy turned out to be a girl. I'm sure you'll enjoy her. If I were you, I'd go ahead and put her with Tink if all you wanted was a snuggle buddy for her. If you still want a boy, I have twins that came OOP 12/26/04 and will be ready for a home on or shortly after 02/20/05. You can email me at []psychomom@charter.net[/] for more info if you're interested.
