I've been in contact with a family who purchased a glider for their daughter around the holidays named Jinxie (female - acquired 8 weeks oop). Ashley and Jinxie bonded very well together and Ashley became glider addicted and decided to get Jinxie a little friend. So in March-ish, she brought home a young male, only three months younger than Jinxie. The two of them have been happily co-habitating until yesterday, when Ashley came home to find that Jinxie has disembowled the young male in a most gruesome fashion. I know that these gliders were on a very good diet plan, that they both appeared to be in excellent health and that they exhibited no signs of anything but loving each other, except for Jinxie getting sometimes a little irritated with the young glider (sorry cannot remember his name) when the young glider would spend too much time grooming Jinxie. I have never heard of such a thing before and I expect to speak to Ashley over the weekend ... her mom called to prepare me for Ashley's call in advance as she is in transit home from school. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this happening before? I hope to find the right words of comfort before we speak together and I am so afraid that Ashley will never see Jinxie in the same light again, and is threatening to get rid of Jinxie ... advice is really appreciated! Thanks all!

Hmmmmmm, now that makes me think since i have baby Twinkles who's just 6 weeks oop and i want to eventually get him together with the one lone female who's at this time a year old !! My instincts say that i wait till he is about 3 month old and a least, if not preferable bigger than her !! I want to introduce them about every once in a while but only about once a week as he becomes independent .. i'm not sure how to handle this since the female is very sweet with me .. but i'm not sure how readily she will accept him but she's a rather small female !! I'm observing both very closely for personality and i have both cages pretty close togehter so they are able to see/smell one another !! I will have to think on that a while longer before i take any action !! I think all will go well but i alo have a feeling i'll have to do it just the right way or else the older female will reject him !! She did not take to another glider about 5 month back but happened to be a female and nothing the previous owner would do did get them to liking each other !! <img border="0" alt="[shrug]" title="" src="graemlins/nixweiss.gif" />

I hope someone can shed some light for you, and I am going to watch for this someone myself. I have a rescue. She was paired with a male, they even had a set of joeys. One day the male just up and turned on her. Ripped her shoulder up, and she had to have stiches. Her stipe down her back now goes off to the side then starts back up in the middle of her back.
I would like to know myself why this happens...I have 3 pairs and I don't want to witness this myself.

Judie,
I am not sure that is what happened. The event was not witnessed. I have seen it once where a male sugar glider did eat the eyes out of his mate, but we necropsied and she actually died from other causes, there was no evidence that he had anything to do with her demise.
The younger male in question was quite a healthy boy ... he came from me, so I know he was off to a good start in life and this family cares for their gliders perfectly. There was no strange behavior or anything out of the ordinary. The cage was moved about a week and a half prior to the event, but the move was from a bedroom to a rather large hall, and this did not seem to create any disturbed behavior either.
My sense of it is this is just one of those rare, fluky things that sometimes happens in the animal kingdom, and I don't know if we'll ever figure the reason why ... I suppose I'm trying to get a sense of frequency on this type of thing. The younger male was nearly her body weight, and too young to be interested in breeding. But, Judie, your thoughts and experience are greatly appreciated. What you say makes a lot of sense to me.
