Snoopy just passed away. He hasn't been doing better, just hanging on. Tonight he was barely moving around I knew in my heart it was almost the end. I held him until the end. He started gasping and then passed on. I called the emergency clinic to ask what I should do with his body overnight and they said to put him in the fridge. I'll take him to the vet tomorrow hopefully they can tell me what I did wrong. Why my sweet boy died. I have other gliders but he was my first male, brought home as a companion to my dear Patty. She is going to be devastated they were so bonded. He just saw the vet yesterday. I'm numb as I write this my mind keeps freezing up I can't believe he is gone, yet another part of me is relieved that he won't have to suffer anymore.

Edited to add (from further down the thread)

I know he was overweight when I got him, he slimmed down then gained wt again then slimmed down again. I had only had him just over a year, the only problem he may have had dietary wise here was too much corn or pine nuts right after I brought him home. But in his prior home he had an unlimited supply of peanuts, and dry cat food. He also spent some time away to college, he would play in the room running free while his owner slept so goodness only know what he was exposed to there, anyone who has spent time in dorms will know what I mean. The good news is it doesn't look like anything contagious, the bad news is he must have been suffering a long time before I even knew he was sick (he hid it well for some time) and I put him through treatments of yucky medicine which he hated for nothing. Please forgive me Snoopy I was trying my best to make you well, I thought if I worked hard enough I could save you, but I couldn't.

Ark Mom-healing prayers and positive energy coming your way from St. Louis. You and Patty can stay close and comfort each other at this time when you especially need each other. And the people on this board understand your pain, so please continue to let us know how how you're doing.

I am so very sorry about Snoopy. I have been following your threads long enough to know that you did everything you could do to help him through this. It is hard to believe, that in spite of your efforts that he is gone. I know from experience how hard it had to have been on you, but he was in the most loving of hands 'till the very end. This is the hardest part about owning gliders and it is the one thing that nothing anyone can say can adequately prepare us for.
I am sure that you already know to give Patty lots of extra attention. She needs you.

i am so sorry to hear about your loss. i know how hard the loss of a pet is, as do the others on the board. i can only hope that you are comforted in knowing he is in a better place, maybe bragging about how wonderful of a mommy you were to him i will say a prayer for you and patty and hope that you are doing ok!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I personally have never felt like I was loosing pets when they died, but more like I was loosing family. Some people don't look at it like that, but from reading your previous posts I think you do, and I'm sorry. Like you said, you have other gliders to care for and you know he isn't suffering. That is what I always tell myself too. I know when (not if) you get to heaven he will be waiting for you as if you were never separated and will be ready to show you around all his favorite gliding spots. They are so close to little angels on earth you know that is what they get promoted to in heaven.
Hugs,
Tara

Talked to the vet clinic's secretary today (they were playing go between as the vet didn't have time to talk to me) The necropsy was done and she wants to send out some of his organs, kidney, liver and intestines she said they didn't look normal, there were some abnormal cells and she wasn't sure what it was. They have to send the samples to California (anybody else think it weird that they go to a state that doesn't allow gliders?) She did a smear of the instestine and found no yeast (I put my baby through the meds for nothing) One secretary said three days for results the other said a week or two. The only thing they could tell me for sure was how much it was going to cost. I don't care what it costs I just need some answers.

I just read this now (I was on vacation all week and "Real Stories" wasn't the first ones I wanted to read - sorry). I want you to know how sorry I am, I know how much Snoopy meant to you. He held on like a little trooper, I wish he had pulled through. At least he isn't suffering anymore and he had you until the end, so he wasn't alone when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I hope time will heal your pain as well as your other babies being there for you. I am truly sorry.

PS: Tuba and Piper say Thank You for the hanging things you sent! (I got them yesterday, i forgot to write to say thanks!)

Glad to hear you got them. Pippen says to say hi to his parents and thanks them for not lecturing, you know "you don't call, you don't write, kids have no respect for their elders" LOL

Got the lab results from the vet today. I thought somebody on the board was collecting information on gliders that had died, if it will help other gliders I would be more than glad to obtain a copy of the report from my vet and send it to them.

I am so very sorry. I followed your post, and really thought he did much better.

You have done nothing wrong. You did the your best trying to get his weight down.

I feel terrible and am thinking of you.

Stories like this always make me so sad, that's why don't visit the real stories section that much.

I beleive it was Lucy who is keeping tract of age of gliders, diet, neucropsy report if any. Send her an email. lletton@iglou.com

It is frustrating to get back a necropsy report that does not say much. As for sending it off to Calif. there happens to be an excellent vet school there. My father says it is number one in the country. As to knowledge on Sugar Gliders...I would think they would be limited on the amount of gliders they do neucropsys on but I cannot say that for sure.

You did your very best and that is all one can do. Even Snoopy knows that too.

To be honest, I've done very little on that database in the past few months, but want to keep collecting information on gliders that have passed on. Necropsy results are so very helpful.

Liver failure seems to be a common cause of death among gliders. It would be helpful to know the TYPE of liver failure...due to cancer, or a diseased liver such as one with cirrhosis type damage, or fatty or enlarged liver. Were you able to find that out, Ark Mom? I would love to see the necropsy.

No sign of cancer, I'm not sure about the other two reasons you listed. I'll have to ask my vet for a copy for the study. If it will help save the lives of other gliders at least it will not have been in vain.
